Approach for describing spatial dynamics of quantum light-matter interaction in dispersive dissipative media

A. A. Zyablovsky, E. S. Andrianov, Igor A. Nechepurenko +3 more

Solving the challenging problem of the amplification and generation of an electromagnetic field in nanostructures enables us to implement many properties of the electromagnetic field at the nanoscale in practical applications. A first-principles quantum-mechanical consideration of such a problem is sufficiently restricted by the exponentially large number of degrees of freedom and does not allow the electromagnetic-field dynamics to be described if it involves a high number of interacting atoms and modes of the electromagnetic field. Conversely, the classical description of electromagnetic fields is incorrect at the nanoscale due to the high level of quantum fluctuations connected to high dissipation and noise levels. In this paper, we develop a framework with a significantly reduced number of degrees of freedom, which describes the quantum spatial dynamics of electromagnetic fields interacting with atoms. As an example, we consider the interaction between atoms placed in a metallic subwavelength groove and demonstrate that a spontaneously excited electromagnetic pulse propagates with the group velocity. The developed approach may be exploited to describe nonuniform amplification and propagation of electromagnetic fields in arbitrary dispersive dissipative systems.

The influence functional method to the description of the dynamics of quantum systems interacting with the laser radiation

Alexander Alexandrovich Biryukov, Александр Александрович Бирюков, Марк Александрович Шлеенков +1 more

The description of interacting multilevel quantum system and quantum electromagnetic field in terms of statistical density matrix is considered in path integral approach. The statistical operator and probability transitions of quantum system are represented as mean of electromagnetic field influence functional. The influence functionals are defined for specific models of electromagnetic field. The explicit form for singleand multimode electromagnetic field is concretized in cases when initial state of the field is represented by vacuum and pure coherent.

The semi-classical approach: atoms interacting with a classical electromagnetic field

G. Grynberg, Alain Aspect, Claude Fabre +1 more

We investigate in this chapter the general problem of the interaction of an atom (or a molecule) and a classical electromagnetic field. Its importance derives firstly from the fact that a large part of our knowledge of atoms is obtained from a study of the radiation they absorb or emit (we shall consider equally visible radiation and radio-frequency and X-rays) and, secondly, that the interaction with matter modifies the propagation of the electromagnetic field itself, notably through absorption, refraction or scattering. The interactions of atoms with light therefore encompass a vast range of physical effects that we could not hope to cover adequately in a single chapter. In this chapter we shall therefore present the fundamental features of the interaction of an atom, which will be treated quantum mechanically, with a classical electromagnetic field, that is an electromagnetic field described by real electric and magnetic vectors obeying Maxwell's equations. A rigorous description of the atom–light interaction would have to take into account the quantum nature of light. This we shall leave to Chapter 6. It turns out, nevertheless, that many important results can be obtained from the semi-classical viewpoint adopted here (although it is perhaps more appropriate to refer to this treatment as ‘semi-quantized’).
