Enhanced mechanical entanglement in a hybrid optomechanical system via reservoir engineering

Yangyang Wang, Lang-Yue Duan, Xiaohai Zheng +1 more

Abstract Mechanical entanglement serves as the crucial resource in quantum information processing. In this scheme, we investigate mechanical entanglement via reservoir engineering in a highly unresolved-sideband optomechanical system assisted by two nitrogen vacancy centers ensembles (NVEs). We demonstrate that strong mechanical entanglement can be generated under appropriate system parameters even in the highly unresolved-sideband regime. Notably, mechanical entanglement emerges only in the resolved-sideband regime without NVEs, while it arises even in the highly unresolved-sideband regime upon coupling with the NVEs. This enhancement stems from the two NVEs effectively suppressing undesirable counter-rotating terms through destructive quantum interference. Meanwhile, a small frequency difference between two mechanical oscillators can enhance mechanical entanglement. Our scheme mitigates the stringent parameter requirements imposed on hybrid optomechanical systems in experimental settings and offers a novel approach for generating strong entanglement in solid-state quantum information processing.

Macroscopic tripartite entanglement of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond coupled to a superconducting resonator

Yusef Maleki, Aleksei M. Zheltikov

We show that a hybrid quantum device consisting of three ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers whose spins are collectively coupled to a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator enables the generation of controllable macroscopic tripartite entangled states. At the instants of time when the waveguide resonator is completely depleted of photons and is thus disentangled from the NV-center ensembles, macroscopic Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger-type states are generated in NV-diamond memories.

Diamond optomechanical crystals with embedded nitrogen-vacancy centers

Jeffrey V. Cady, Ohad Michel, Kenneth W. Lee +4 more

Hybrid quantum devices, in which disparate quantum elements are combined in order to achieve enhanced functionality, have received much attention in recent years due to their exciting potential to address key problems in quantum information processing, communication, and control. Specifically, significant progress has been made in the field of hybrid mechanical devices, in which a qubit is coupled to a mechanical oscillator. Strong coupling in such devices has been demonstrated with superconducting qubits, and coupling defect qubits to mechanical elements via crystal strain has enabled novel methods of qubit measurement and control. In this paper we demonstrate the fabrication of diamond optomechanical crystals with embedded nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, a preliminary step toward reaching the quantum regime with defect qubit hybrid mechanical devices. We measure optical and mechanical resonances of diamond optomechanical crystals as well as the spin coherence of single embedded NV centers. We find that the spin has long coherence times $T_2^* = 1.5 μs$ and $T_2 = 72 μs$ despite its proximity to nanofabricated surfaces. Finally, we discuss potential improvements of these devices and prospects for future experiments in the quantum regime.
