Complex magnetic monopoles, geometric phases and quantum evolution in the vicinity of diabolic and exceptional points

Alexander I Nesterov, F Aceves de la Cruz

We consider the geometric phase and quantum tunneling in the vicinity of diabolic and exceptional points. We show that the geometric phase associated with the degeneracy points is defined by the flux of complex magnetic monopoles. In the limit of weak coupling, the leading contribution to the real part of the geometric phase is given by the flux of the Dirac monopole plus a quadrupole term, and the expansion of the imaginary part starts with a dipole-like field. For a two-level system governed by a generic non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we derive a formula to compute the non-adiabatic, complex, geometric phase by integrating over the complex Bloch sphere. We apply our results to study a dissipative two-level system driven by a periodic electromagnetic field and show that, in the vicinity of the exceptional point, the complex geometric phase behaves like a step-function. Studying the tunneling process near and at the exceptional point, we find two different regimes: coherent and incoherent. The coherent regime is characterized by Rabi oscillations, with a one-sheeted hyperbolic monopole emerging in this region of the parameters. The two-sheeted hyperbolic monopole is associated with the incoherent regime. We show that the dissipation results in a series of pulses in the complex geometric phase which disappear when the dissipation dies out. Such a strong coupling effect of the environment is beyond the conventional adiabatic treatment of the Berry phase.

Spatial non-cyclic geometric phase in neutron interferometry

Stefan Filipp, Yuji Hasegawa, Rudolf Loidl +1 more

We present a split-beam neutron interferometric experiment to test the non-cyclic geometric phase tied to the spatial evolution of the system: the subjacent two-dimensional Hilbert space is spanned by the two possible paths in the interferometer and the evolution of the state is controlled by phase shifters and absorbers. A related experiment was reported previously by some of the authors to verify the cyclic spatial geometric phase. The interpretation of this experiment, namely to ascribe a geometric phase to this particular state evolution, has met severe criticism. The extension to non-cyclic evolution manifests the correctness of the interpretation of the previous experiment by means of an explicit calculation of the non-cyclic geometric phase in terms of paths on the Bloch-sphere. The theoretical treatment comprises the cyclic geometric phase as a special case, which is confirmed by experiment.

NMR C-NOT gate through the Aharanov-Anandan phase shift

Xiang‐Bin Wang, Keiji Matsumoto

Recently, it has been proposed to perform quantum computation through the Berry phase (adiabatic cyclic geometric phase) shift with NMR. This geometric quantum gate will hopefully be fault tolerant to certain types of error because of the geometric property of the Berry phase. Here we give a scheme to realize the NMR C-NOT gate through the Aharonov-Anandan phase (non-adiabatic cyclic phase) shift on the dynamic phase free evolution loop. In our scheme, the gate is run non-adiabatically, thus it is less affected by the decoherence. Moreover, in the scheme we have chosen the zero dynamic phase time evolution loop in obtaining the geometric phase shift; we need not perform any extra operation to cancel the dynamic phase.
