Abstract

Quantum computing continues to attract great attention from the scientific community, in both academia and high-technology industry. Quite a few technical hurdles need to be cleverly addressed before quantum computers can be widely deployed. It is our great pleasure to introduce Prof. Ching-Ray Chang and Prof. Chao-Sung Lai as Guest Editors of this Special Issue of IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine.

Quantum Software and Its Engineering [Focus: Guest Editors’ Introduction]

Michael Epping, Michael Felderer, Vlad Gheorghiu +1 more

Quantum computing (QC) is gaining considerable attention from industry and academia alike. It has been making great progress in recent years, and quantum computers are increasingly available to a larger community. It is foreseeable that the technology will become established for specific use cases in optimization, machine learning (ML), or material simulation.

Quantum Computing

James Frederick Amundson, E. Sexton-Kennedy

In recent years Quantum Computing has attracted a great deal of attention in the scientific and technical communities. Interest in the field has expanded to include the popular press and various funding agencies. We discuss the origins of the idea of using quantum systems for computing. We then give an overview in recent developments in quantum hardware and software, as well as some potential applications for high energy physics.

Quantum Software: The Brain of Quantum — Guest Editor’s Introduction

Iaakov Exman

Quantum Software, its engineering and its applications are becoming more and more indispensable components of the current knowledge baggage of researchers and industrial professionals. Given the continuous accelerating developments of Quantum Computing, and the vastness of available knowledge, one needs efficient methods to dedicate the limited available personal time to the correct choice of selective information. This Special Issue on “Quantum Computing and Software Engineering” offers a small, but diverse set of papers covering theoretical, practical software system design and a pragmatic survey of Quantum Software Engineering, being a map pointing to references of relevance, aiming to answer the issue of choice of selective information.

Quantum Computing for Microwave Engineers [From the Guest Editor's Desk]

Joseph C. Bardin

The articles in this special section focus on quantum computing. After decades of research and development, quantum computing has recently grown into one of the hottest and most promising of all emerging fields. While large-scale quantum computing was just a pipe dream even a decade ago, today there is an intense race around the globe to build a practical quantum computer. So, as a microwave engineer, why should you be interested in quantum computing? It turns out that there is actually a significant amount of microwave engineering involved in the implementation of many controllable quantum systems.
