Abstract

The quantum many-body interactions in one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems are subject to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) physics, which predict an array of multiparticle excitations that form continua in momentum-energy space. Here we use inelastic neutron spectroscopy to study the TLL spin dynamics in ${\mathrm{SrCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, a compound which contains weakly coupled spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains of Co atoms, at 0.05 K and in a longitudinal magnetic field up to 9.0 T. The measurements were performed above 3.9 T, where the ground-state N\'eel antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is completely suppressed and the multiparticle excitations are exclusively of the TLL type. In this region and below 7.0 T, the longitudinal TLL mode---psinon/antipsinon (P/AP)---is unexpectedly well described by a damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) while approaching the zone center defining the static spin-spin correlations. A non-DHO-type, continuumlike signal is seen at higher fields, but deviations from the ideal one-dimensional TLL still remain. This change in the P/AP mode coincides with the phase transition between the longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) and transverse AFM order. Inside the LSDW state, the DHO-type P/AP spectral weight increases and the linewidth broadens as the magnetic order parameter decreases. These results reveal the impact of three-dimensional magnetic order on the TLL spin dynamics; they call for beyond-mean-field treatment for the interchain exchange interactions.

Inhomogeneous spin excitations in weakly coupled spin- 12 chains

L. Shen, E. Campillo, O. Zaharko +8 more

We present a systematic inelastic neutron scattering and neutron diffraction study on the magnetic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnet ${\mathrm{SrCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, where the interchain coupling in the N\'eel-type antiferromagnetic ground state breaks the static spin lattice into two independent domains. At zero magnetic field, we have observed two new spin excitations with small spectral weights inside the gapped region defined by the spinon bound states. In an external magnetic field along the chain axis, the N\'eel order gets partially destabilized at ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}^{★}=2.0\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ and completely suppressed at ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{\mathrm{p}}=3.9\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$, above which a quantum disordered Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid (TLL) prevails. The low-energy spin excitations between ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}^{★}$ and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{\mathrm{p}}$ are not homogeneous, containing the dispersionless (or weakly dispersive) spinon bound states excited in the N\'eel phase and the highly dispersive psinon-antipsinon mode characteristic of a TLL. We propose that the two new modes at zero field are spinon excitations inside the domain walls. Since they have a smaller gap than those excited in the N\'eel domains, the underlying spin chains enter the TLL state via a local quantum phase transition at ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}^{★}$, making the N\'eel/TLL coexistence a stable configuration until the excitation gap in the N\'eel domains closes at ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{\mathrm{p}}$.

Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Spin Dynamics in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Ising-Like Antiferromagnet BaCo 2 V 2 O 8

Quentin Faure, Shintaro Takayoshi, Virginie Simonet +8 more

Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one-dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet BaCo_{2}V_{2}O_{8} in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Néel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly, the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We especially observe the rise of mainly longitudinal excitations, a hallmark of the unconventional low-field regime in Ising-like quantum antiferromagnetic chains.

Role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain interaction in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains*

Yuchen Fan, Rong Yu

In quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) quantum antiferromagnets, the complicated interplay of intrachain and interchain exchange couplings may give rise to rich phenomena. Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in the q1D antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound YbAlO3, we study the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and investigate the role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain coupling on the ground state of the system. We find that the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling can significantly enhance the longitudinal spin correlations and drive the system to an incommensurate AFM phase at intermediate magnetic fields, which is understood as a longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW). With increasing field, the ground state changes to a canted AFM order with transverse spin correlations. We further provide a global phase diagram showing how the competition between the LSDW and the canted AFM states is tuned by the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling.

Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Behavior in a Rydberg-Encoded Spin Chain

Gabriel Emperauger, Mu Qiao, Cheng Chen +14 more

Quantum fluctuations can disrupt long-range order in one-dimensional systems and replace it with the universal paradigm of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), a critical phase of matter characterized by power-law decaying correlations and linearly dispersing excitations. Using a Rydberg quantum simulator, we study how TLL physics manifests in the low-energy properties of a spin chain, interacting under either the ferromagnetic or the antiferromagnetic dipolar XY Hamiltonian. Following quasiadiabatic preparation, we directly observe the power-law decay of spin-spin correlations in real space, allowing us to extract the Luttinger parameter. In the presence of an impurity, the chain exhibits tunable Friedel oscillations of the local magnetization. Moreover, by utilizing a quantum quench, we directly probe the propagation of correlations, which exhibit a light-cone structure related to the linear sound mode of the underlying TLL. Our measurements demonstrate the influence of the long-range dipolar interactions, renormalizing the parameters of TLL with respect to the case of nearest-neighbor interactions. Finally, comparison to numerical simulations exposes the high sensitivity of TLLs to doping and finite-size effects.

Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid in Quasi-one-dimensional Alternating Spin-$1/2$ Antiferromagnet NaVOPO$_4$

S. S. Islam, Prashanta K. Mukharjee, Pabitra Kumar Biswas⃰ +8 more

We probe the magnetic field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state in the bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain compound NaVOPO$_4$ using thermodynamic as well as local $μ$SR and $^{31}$P NMR probes down to milli-K temperatures in magnetic fields up to 14~T. The $μ$SR and NMR relaxation rates in the gapless TLL regime decay slowly following characteristic power-law behaviour, enabling us to directly determine the interaction parameter $K$ as a function of the magnetic field. These estimates are cross-checked using magnetization and specific heat data. The field-dependent $K$ lies in the range of $0.4 < K < 1$ and indicates repulsive nature of interactions between the spinless fermions, in line with the theoretical predictions. This renders NaVOPO$_4$ the first experimental realization of TLL with repulsive fermionic interactions in hitherto studied $S=1/2$ bond-alternating AFM-AFM chain compounds.

Temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T1 for quantum spin chains

Maxime Dupont, Sylvain Capponi, Nicolas Laflorencie

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnets are good candidates to realize a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), describing 1D interacting quantum systems, provided 3D coupling remains small as compared to temperature. In systems such as NiCl${}_{2}$-4SC(NH${}_{2}$)${}_{2}$ (DTN), made of weakly coupled spin $S=1$ chains, interchain coupling plays an important role at low temperature as it leads to antiferromagnetic long-range order below $1$ K, corresponding to a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. Using time-dependent numerical simulations at finite temperature, the authors compute here the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate $1/{T}_{1}$, a key experimental quantity, and address the question of the low-temperature crossover between TLL predictions and the higher-temperature regime in purely $1$D quantum spins chains. They also comment on the experimental observation of the TLL regime, possibly masked by $3$D long-range order in materials such as DTN.
