Abstract

Bilinear interpolation is widely used in classical signal and image processing. Quantum algorithms have been designed for efficiently realizing bilinear interpolation. However, these quantum algorithms have limitations in circuit width and garbage outputs, which block the quantum algorithms applied to noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. In addition, the existing quantum bilinear interpolation algorithms cannot keep the consistency between the geometric centers of the original and target images. To save the above questions, we propose quantum bilinear interpolation algorithms based on geometric centers using fault-tolerant implementations of quantum arithmetic operators. Proposed algorithms include the scaling-up and scaling-down for signals (grayscale images) and signals with three channels (color images). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed bilinear interpolation algorithms obtain the same results as their classical counterparts with an exponential speedup. Performance analysis reveals that the proposed bilinear interpolation algorithms keep the consistency of geometric centers and significantly reduce circuit width and garbage outputs compared to the existing works.

T-count Optimized Quantum Circuits for Bilinear Interpolation

Edgard Muñoz‐Coreas, Himanshu Thapliyal

Quantum circuits for basic image processing functions such as bilinear interpolation are required to implement image processing algorithms on quantum computers. In this work, we propose quantum circuits for the bilinear interpolation of NEQR encoded images based on Clifford+T gates. Quantum circuits for the scale up operation and scale down operation are illustrated. The proposed quantum circuits are based on quantum Clifford+T gates and are optimized for T-count. Quantum circuits based on Clifford+T gates can be made fault tolerant but the T gate is very costly to implement. As a result, reducing T-count is an important optimization goal. The proposed quantum bilinear interpolation circuits are based on (i) a quantum adder, (ii) a proposed quantum subtractor, and (iii) a quantum multiplication circuit. Further, both designs are compared and shown to be superior to existing work in terms of T-count. The proposed quantum bilinear interpolation circuits for the scale down operation and for the scale up operation each have a 92.52% improvement in terms of T-count compared to the existing work.

Quantum implementation of bilinear interpolation algorithm based on NEQR and center alignment

Shuo 硕 Cai 蔡, Ri‐Gui Zhou

Abstract In the field of quantum image processing, scaling techniques have been extensively studied as a critical subfield. Predominantly, these techniques leverage bilinear interpolation method. However, the current quantum bilinear interpolation algorithm remains in its initial version, resulting in a significant flaw: the centers of the source image and the interpolated image are misaligned. This flaw not only leads to results identical to nearest neighbor interpolation during integer multiple image scaling-down but also causes excessive qubit usage. To tackle these issues, our study introduces an innovative bilinear interpolation method with the following key advancements. Firstly, by integrating the NEQR representation with an enhanced bilinear interpolation from OpenCV, the central misalignment is effectively rectified. Secondly, resolving the central misalignment enables our method to prevent the degradation to nearest neighbor interpolation during integer multiple image reduction. Finally, based on the characteristics of optimization algorithms and quantum computing, along with simpler quantum modules and quantum convolution algorithms, the steps of the quantum image scaling algorithm have been optimized to reduce circuit complexity. Through a series of simulation experiments and complexity analyses, it has been demonstrated that our method, compared to the initial bilinear interpolation method, exhibits lower circuit complexity and significantly reduces qubit usage.

Quantum color image scaling based on bilinear interpolation

Chao Gao, Ri‐Gui Zhou, Xin Li

As a part of quantum image processing, quantum image scaling is a significant technology for the development of quantum computation. At present, most of the quantum image scaling schemes are based on grayscale images, with relatively little processing for color images. This paper proposes a quantum color image scaling scheme based on bilinear interpolation, which realizes the 2 n 1 × 2 n 2 quantum color image scaling. Firstly, the improved novel quantum representation of color digital images (INCQI) is employed to represent a 2 n 1 × 2 n 2 quantum color image, and the bilinear interpolation method for calculating pixel values of the interpolated image is presented. Then the quantum color image scaling-up and scaling-down circuits are designed by utilizing a series of quantum modules, and the complexity of the circuits is analyzed. Finally, the experimental simulation results of MATLAB based on the classical computer are given. The ultimate results demonstrate that the complexities of the scaling-up and scaling-down schemes are quadratic and linear, respectively, which are much lower than the cubic function and exponential function of other bilinear interpolation schemes.

Quantum realization of the bilinear interpolation method for NEQR

Ri‐Gui Zhou, WenWen Hu, Ping Fan +1 more

In recent years, quantum image processing is one of the most active fields in quantum computation and quantum information. Image scaling as a kind of image geometric transformation has been widely studied and applied in the classical image processing, however, the quantum version of which does not exist. This paper is concerned with the feasibility of the classical bilinear interpolation based on novel enhanced quantum image representation (NEQR). Firstly, the feasibility of the bilinear interpolation for NEQR is proven. Then the concrete quantum circuits of the bilinear interpolation including scaling up and scaling down for NEQR are given by using the multiply Control-Not operation, special adding one operation, the reverse parallel adder, parallel subtractor, multiplier and division operations. Finally, the complexity analysis of the quantum network circuit based on the basic quantum gates is deduced. Simulation result shows that the scaled-up image using bilinear interpolation is clearer and less distorted than nearest interpolation.

Integer multiple quantum image scaling based on NEQR and bicubic interpolation

Shuo 硕 Cai 蔡, Ri-Gui 日贵 Zhou 周, Jia 佳 Luo 罗 +1 more

As a branch of quantum image processing, quantum image scaling has been widely studied. However, most of the existing quantum image scaling algorithms are based on nearest-neighbor interpolation and bilinear interpolation, the quantum version of bicubic interpolation has not yet been studied. In this work, we present the first quantum image scaling scheme for bicubic interpolation based on the novel enhanced quantum representation (NEQR). Our scheme can realize synchronous enlargement and reduction of the image with the size of 2 n × 2 n by integral multiple. Firstly, the image is represented by NEQR and the original image coordinates are obtained through multiple CNOT modules. Then, 16 neighborhood pixels are obtained by quantum operation circuits, and the corresponding weights of these pixels are calculated by quantum arithmetic modules. Finally, a quantum matrix operation, instead of a classical convolution operation, is used to realize the sum of convolution of these pixels. Through simulation experiments and complexity analysis, we demonstrate that our scheme achieves exponential speedup over the classical bicubic interpolation algorithm, and has better effect than the quantum version of bilinear interpolation.

Bilinear interpolation method for quantum images based on quantum Fourier transform

Panchi Li, Xiande Liu

Image scaling is the basic operation that is widely used in classic image processing, including nearest-neighbor interpolation, bilinear interpolation, and bicubic interpolation. In quantum image processing (QIP), the research on image scaling is focused on nearest-neighbor interpolation, while the related research of bilinear interpolation is very rare, and that of bicubic interpolation has not been reported yet. In this study, a new method based on quantum Fourier transform (QFT) is designed for bilinear interpolation of images. Firstly, some basic functional modules are constructed, in which the new method based on QFT is adopted for the design of two core modules (i.e. addition and multiplication), and then these modules are used to design quantum circuits for the bilinear interpolation of images, including scaling-up and down. Finally, the complexity analysis of the scaling circuits based on the elementary gates is deduced. Simulation results show that the scaling image using bilinear interpolation is clearer than that using the nearest-neighbor interpolation.
