Abstract

Multiplexing techniques combine multiple signals into one channel, in order to increase the channel capacity and speed. Here we propose a correlation-based imaging method to efficiently measure the quantum states of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM)-multiplexed Gaussian light. The covariance matrices for all OAM components of the multiplexed Gaussian light can be efficiently reconstructed by one homodyne measurement on each beam. We also show that the proposed scheme can be simplified and implemented with only two charge coupled device detectors.

Continuous-variable entangled states of light carrying orbital angular momentum

Adriana Pecoraro, Filippo Cardano, Lorenzo Marrucci +1 more

The orbital angular momentum of light, unlike spin, is an infinite-dimensional discrete variable and may hence offer enhanced performances for encoding, transmitting, and processing quantum information. Hitherto, this degree of freedom of light has been studied mainly in the context of quantum states with definite number of photons. On the other hand, field-quadrature continuous-variable quantum states of light allow implementing many important quantum protocols not accessible with photon-number states. Here, we realize a scheme based on a $q$-plate device for endowing a bipartite continuous-variable Gaussian entangled state with nonzero orbital angular momentum. We then apply a reconfigurable homodyne detector working directly with such nonzero orbital angular momentum modes in order to retrieve experimentally their entire quantum-state covariance matrix, thus providing a full characterization of their quantum fluctuation properties. Our work is a step towards generating multipartite continuous-variable entanglement in a single optical beam.

Quantum coherence of an orbital angular momentum multiplexed continuous-variable entangled state

Hong Wen, Li Xia Zeng, Rong Ma +4 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed entangled state is an important quantum resource for high dimensional quantum information processing. In this paper, we experimentally quantify quantum coherence of OAM multiplexed continuous-variable (CV) entangled state and characterize its evolution in a noisy environment. We show that the quantum coherence of the OAM multiplexed CV entangled state carrying topological charges l = 1 and l = 2 are the same as that of the Gaussian mode with l = 0 in a noisy channel. Furthermore, we show that the quantum coherence of OAM multiplexed entangled state is robust to noise, even though the sudden death of entanglement is observed. Our results provide reference for applying quantum coherence of OAM multiplexed CV entangled state in a noisy environment.

Orbital-angular-momentum spectrum characterization of continuous-variable entanglement via the phase-shift interferometry

Rong Ma, Xiaoqin Qu, xiaowei wu +4 more

In addition to carrying spin angular momentum (SAM), light can also possess orbital angular momentum (OAM), whose quantum number can, in principle, take any integer value. This property provides a new degree of freedom to expand the capacity of both classical and quantum information. In recent years, generating OAM multiplexed continuous-variable entanglement via four-wave mixing (FWM) has emerged as an effective approach to increasing the capacity of quantum information channels. Consequently, there is a growing demand for precise characterization of the OAM spectrum in such quantum beams. Here we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental demonstration of OAM spectrum measurement in quantum optics using phase-shifting interferometry (PSI). This method enables accurate characterization of the OAM spectrum of both the probe and conjugate beams in OAM multiplexed continuous-variable entanglement generated via the FWM process. These results provide an experimental foundation for the reliable detection and utilization of multiplexed OAM degrees of freedom in quantum communication and quantum information processing.

Two-Measurement Tomography of High-Dimensional Orbital Angular Momentum Entanglement

Yi Li, Shuang‐Yin Huang, Min Wang +4 more

High-dimensional (HD) entanglement enables an encoding of more bits than in the two-dimensional case and promises to increase communication capacity over quantum channels and to improve robustness to noise. In practice, however, one of the central challenges is to devise efficient methods to quantify the HD entanglement explicitly. Full quantum state tomography is a standard technology to obtain all the information about the quantum state, but it becomes impractical because the required measurements increase exponentially with the dimension in HD systems. Hence, it is highly anticipated that a new method will be found for characterizing the HD entanglement with as few measurements as possible and without introducing unwarranted assumptions. Here, we present and demonstrate a scan-free tomography method independent of dimension, which only requires two measurements for the characterization of two-photon HD orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement. Taking Laguerre-Gaussian modes of photons as an example, the density matrices of OAM entangled states are experimentally reconstructed with very high fidelity. Our method is also generalized to the mixed HD OAM entanglement. Our results provide realistic approaches for quantifying more complex OAM entanglement in many scientific and engineering fields such as multiphoton HD quantum systems and quantum process tomography.

Deterministic distribution of orbital angular momentum multiplexed continuous-variable entanglement and quantum steering

Li Xia Zeng, Rong Ma, Hong Wen +4 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing provides an efficient method to improve data-carrying capacity in various quantum communication protocols. It is a precondition to distribute OAM multiplexed quantum resources in quantum channels for implementing quantum communication. However, quantum steering of OAM multiplexed optical fields and the effect of channel noise on OAM multiplexed quantum resources remain unclear. Here, we generate OAM multiplexed continuous-variable (CV) entangled states and distribute them in lossy or noisy channels. We show that the decoherence property of entanglement and quantum steering of the OAM multiplexed states carrying topological charges l = 1 and l = 2 are the same as that of the Gaussian mode with l = 0 in lossy and noisy channels. The sudden death of entanglement and quantum steering of high-order OAM multiplexed states is observed in the presence of excess noise. Our results demonstrate the feasibility to realize high data-carrying capacity quantum information processing by utilizing OAM multiplexed CV entangled states.

Visualized quantum 3D orbital-angular-momentum holography

Yi-Lin Hua, Yaodong Chen, Weijia Meng +4 more

Currently, most quantum holography schemes adopt reconstructing images from the second-order correlation information or fiber scanning, which are both non-visualized, meanwhile making three-dimensional (3D) quantum holography a big challenge. Here, we implement the visualized quantum 3D orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) holography in the twin photon system, where the OAM-multiplexing hologram within two imaging planes and three OAM channels in the signal arm is selectively read out and directly displayed on an intensified CMOS camera by switching the OAM state in the idler arm.A thousands-of-times acceleration of the holographic reconstruction process is achieved with the maintenance of the OAM feature for each pixel compared to the scanning approach. The 3D imaging feature in a quantum holography system provides additional freedom for further improving the capacity of holographic information transmission and encryption.
