Maneuvering measurement-coherence into measurement-entanglement

Ho-Joon Kim, Soojoon Lee

Quantum dynamics governs the transformation of static quantum resources, such as coherence and entanglement, in both quantum states and measurements. Prior studies have established that a quantum channel's state-cohering power can be converted into the state-entangling power without additional coherence. Here, we complete this coherence-to-entanglement paradigm by demonstrating that a channel's measurement-cohering power can likewise be converted into the measurement-entangling power. This result reinforces, on the dynamical level, the intuition that entanglement emerges as a manifestation of coherence. To formalize this picture, we develop resource theories for measurement-cohering and measurement-entangling powers and characterize the structure of incoherent measurements to analyze measurement-coherence generation. Furthermore, we show that the state-cohering power of a quantum channel is equivalent to the measurement-cohering power of its adjoint map, and a corresponding equivalence also exists between the state-entangling power and the measurement-entangling power.

Experimental verification of a coherence factorization law for quantum states

Yi Zheng, Chengjie Zhang, Zhenghao Liu +4 more

As a quantum resource, quantum coherence plays an important role in modern physics. Many coherence measures and their relations with entanglement have been proposed, and the dynamics of entanglement has been experimentally studied. However, the knowledge of general results for coherence dynamics in open systems is limited. Here we propose a coherence factorization law that describes the evolution of coherence passing through any noisy channels characterized by genuinely incoherent operations. We use photons to implement the quantum operations and experimentally verify the law for qubits and qutrits. Our work is a step toward understanding of the evolution of coherence when the system interacts with the environment, and will boost the study of more general laws of coherence.

Complete retrieval of attosecond photoelectron dynamics from partially coherent states in entangled photoemission

Morgan Berkane, Richard Taïeb, Gabriel Granveau +4 more

The authors investigate the possibility of reconstructing photoemission dynamics at the attosecond time scale when the outcome of the process is only partially characterized, i.e., when the measurement is hampered by a loss of coherence. Borrowing from both attosecond science and quantum information, they show that deciphering decoherence rather than considering it as a technical limitation can give access to detailed insight on attosecond time-resolved entanglement in photoemission.
