Abstract

Information security has always been a critical issue in wireless networks. Apart from other secure techniques, covert communication emerges as a potential solution to security for wireless networks owing to its high-security level. In covert communication networks, the transmitter hides the transmitted signals into environmental or artificial noise by introducing randomness to avoid detection at the warden. By eliminating the existence of transmitted signals at the warden, information security can be preserved more solidly than other secure transmission techniques, i.e., without noticing the existence. Due to the promising security protection, covert communication has been successfully utilized in tremendous wireless communication scenarios. However, fundamental challenges in its practical implementation still exist, e.g., the effectiveness of randomness utilization, the low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at legitimate users, etc. In this survey, we demonstrate a comprehensive review concentrating on the applications, solutions, and future challenges of covert communications. Specifically, the covert principle and research categories are first introduced. Then, the applications in the networks with different topologies and the effective covert techniques in the existing literature are reviewed. We also discuss the potential implementation of covert communications in future networks and the open challenges.

Covert Wireless Communications in IoT Systems: Hiding Information in Interference

Zhihong Liu, Jiajia Liu, Yong Zeng +1 more

Wireless channels are increasingly being used to transmit highly sensitive information in the Internet of Things. However, traditional cryptography methods cannot solve all security problems in IoT systems. Covert wireless communication can prevent an adversary from knowing the existence of a user's transmission; thus, it can provide stronger security protection for IoT devices. In this article, we consider the covert communication in a noisy wireless network, and find that the uncertainty of the aggregated interference experienced by the adversary is beneficial to the potential transmitters. From the network perspective, wireless communications can be hidden in the interference of the noisy wireless network, which the adversary observes as a "shadow" network to a certain extent. Furthermore, we discuss some new results on the effect of active eavesdropper. Square root law becomes invalid, and even jammer-assisted schemes have little effect on the covertness in the presence of active eavesdropper. Finally, we provide a vision for future research.

Physical Layer Covert Communication in B5G Wireless Networks—its Research, Applications, and Challenges

Yu'e Jiang, Liangmin Wang, Hsiao‐Hwa Chen +1 more

Physical layer covert communication is a crucial secure communication technology that enables a transmitter to convey information covertly to a recipient without being detected by adversaries. Unlike typical cryptography and physical layer security systems that concentrate on protecting the sent signal content, covert communications seek to conceal the existence of legitimate transmission. Thus, with beyond fifth-generation (B5G) wireless communications, covert communications can operate in tandem or as a supplement to conventional security techniques. We provide an extensive overview of the basic theories and several strategies in physical layer covert communications in this article. In particular, we go into great detail about the basic theories of physical layer covert communications, such as channel models, codes, secret keys, and covertness metrics, as well as various covert schemes in progressively more complicated scenarios, such as covert communications in single-antenna and multiantenna three-node systems and covert communications in jammer-and relay-aided systems. In addition, we identify the challenges and future directions for research on covert communications in B5G wireless networks.

Physical layer security techniques for data transmission for future wireless networks

Weiping Shi, Xinyi Jiang, Jinsong Hu +7 more

The broadcast nature of wireless communication systems makes wireless transmission extremely susceptible to eavesdropping and even malicious interference. Physical layer security technology can effectively protect the private information sent by the transmitter from being listened to by illegal eavesdroppers, thus ensuring the privacy and security of communication between the transmitter and legitimate users. Thus, the main design goal of physical layer security is to increase the performance difference between the link of the legitimate receiver and that of the eavesdropper using well-designed transmission schemes. The development of mobile communication presents new challenges to physical layer security research. This paper provides a survey of the physical layer security research on various promising mobile technologies from secure key generation and keyless techniques, including secure key generation, directional modulation (DM), spatial modulation (SM), covert communication, and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided communication. Finally, the future topics and the unresolved technical challenges are presented in physical layer security for mobile communications.

Covert Communication With the Help of Relay and Channel Uncertainty

Jianquan Wang, Wanbin Tang, Qiangqiang Zhu +3 more

Covert communication aims to hide the existence of the transmissions to guarantee the security in wireless communications. In this letter, channel uncertainty is exploited to achieve covert communication in relay networks. The transmitter Alice sends messages to the legitimate receiver Bob with the help of a relay, while the warden Willie wants to detect the existence of the transmission. The channel uncertainty introduces confusions to degrade the performance of Willie's detection. We show that Alice can transmit ${O}$ (${n}$ ) bits in ${n}$ channel uses covertly with the help of relay and channel uncertainty. Numerical results are shown to illustrate the achievability and the performance of the considered scenario.

Covert Communication for UAV-Assisted Wireless Systems with Probabilistic Jamming

Linying Tian, Chan Gao, Dong Zheng +2 more

With the rapid development of wireless network technology, wireless communication system effectively satisfies the demand for personal communication and information acquisition. However, the significant security issue is that wireless communication is both in a complex external environment and has open space characteristics, which makes the information vulnerable to malicious attacks. In this paper, we investigate the covert performance in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless communication system with probabilistic jamming from a legitimate node. We propose a probabilistic jamming-based transmission scheme that uses a probabilistic approach to send an artificial noise with variable power to against the warden’s detection. For the proposed scheme, we then derive expressions for the warden’s detection error probability and covert rate. We also find the optimal covert performance under a given covertness. Finally, the simulation results are given to reveal the impact of the a priori artificial noise transmission probability on the communication covertness and the system’s performance, confirming the effectiveness of the probabilistic jamming scheme.

Low Probability of Detection Communication: Opportunities and Challenges

Shihao Yan, Xiangyun Zhou, Jinsong Hu +1 more

LPD communication has recently emerged as a new transmission technology to address privacy and security in wireless networks. Recent studies have established the fundamental limits of LPD communication in terms of the amount of information that can be conveyed from a transmitter to a receiver subject to a constraint on a warden's detection error probability. The established information- theoretic metric enables analytical studies on the design and performance of LPD communication under various channel conditions. In this article, we present the key features of LPD communication and discuss various important design considerations. First, we clarify the differences between LPD communication and well-known physical-layer security. Then, from an information-theoretic point of view, we discuss the optimal signaling strategies for transmitting the message-carrying signal and artificial noise signal for LPD communication. Finally, we identify the key challenges in the design of practical LPD communication systems and point out future research directions in this context. This article provides guidelines for designing practical LPD communication strategies in wireless systems and networks.
