Quantum computing principles and devices

Vinod Kumar Khanna

Present-day computers are essentially non-quantum mechanical in operation. The logic gates of a classical computer are irreversible in nature. For easy understanding, elementary quantum mechanics is reviewed including the Schrödinger’s equation, the particle-in-a-box problem, state superposition and collapsing. Bloch sphere representation of a quantum bit is explained. The qubits display interesting properties of quantum superposition, entanglement and interference, characteristic of atomic and subatomic particles. Measurements carried out on qubits cause their wave functions to collapse forcing them into a definite 0 or 1 state. Qubit decoherence on interaction with the environment is a major problem in quantum computing Three types of quantum computing devices are discussed including silicon, superconducting and trapped qubit devices. Among silicon devices, gate-controlled silicon quantum dots and phosphorous donor implanted Si substrates are considered. Superconducting qubit archetypes and their realization techniques are explained. The transmon qubit design is preferred for charge noise mitigation. Under the trapped ion qubit devices, construction and operation of Paul ion traps is discussed, and the types of trapped ion qubits are elucidated.

Quantum Logic gate from Silicon quantum dots

Shimaa. S. Abdelfattah

Quantum computer has a great attention all over the world, several attempts to construct it by supposing a theoretical or experimental model for qubit which is the basic unit of quantum computer. Qubit is formed from two level physical system, So, semiconductor quantum dot is suitable for qubit where qubit state formed from superposition between two spin states , silicon (Si) quantum dot is one of suitable system for qubit and quantum logic gate because of its long coherence time. In this work, we study theoretical model of quantum dots from silicon (Si) which coupling through superposition and entanglement mechanism to form quantum logic gate. we have investigated magnetic field effect on exchange interaction by using two approximate methods Hund – Mullikan (HM) and Hitler – London (LH) for calculation and evaluation of the exchange interaction coupling , also study the influence of inter – dots distance on the exchange coupling. From investigation of exchange interaction, silicon quantum dots is the best suitable for quantum logic gate.

Semiconductor Innovations in Quantum Computing

Jegannathan Mangaiyarkkarasi, J. Shanthalakshmi Revathy

Quantum computing represents a transformative leap in computational power, capable of solving problems beyond the reach of classical computers. This chapter focuses on the crucial role of semiconductor advancements in developing quantum computing, highlighting key technological breakthroughs and engineering challenges. It begins with an overview of quantum computing principles, emphasizing qubits' unique properties like superposition and entanglement, which enable parallel computations. The chapter then delves into semiconductor-based qubits, including silicon-based quantum dots, superconducting qubits, and spin qubits, exploring their operational principles, fabrication techniques, and performance metrics. It also examines material science innovations such as isotopically purified silicon and silicon-germanium heterostructures, essential for qubit stability and scalability. Additionally, the chapter addresses engineering challenges like quantum error correction and the integration of quantum and classical computing systems.
