Wigner distribution of Sine-Gordon and Kink solitons

Abstract

Wigner distributions play a significant role in formulating the phase–space analog of quantum mechanics. The Schrödinger wave functional for solitons is needed to derive it for solitons. The Wigner distribution derived can further be used for calculating the charge distributions, current densities and wave function amplitude in position or momentum space. It can be also used to calculate the upper bound of the quantum speed limit time. We derive and analyze the Wigner distributions for Kink and Sine-Gordon solitons by evaluating the Schrödinger wave functional for both solitons. The charge, current density, and quantum speed limit for solitons are also discussed which we obtain from the derived analytical expression of Wigner distributions.

Nonlinear quantum-mechanical system associated with Sine-Gordon equation in (1 + 2) dimensions

Yair Zarmi

Despite the fact that it is not integrable, the (1 + 2)-dimensional Sine-Gordon equation has N-soliton solutions, whose velocities are lower than the speed of light (c = 1), for all N ≥ 1. Based on these solutions, a quantum-mechanical system is constructed over a Fock space of particles. The coordinate of each particle is an angle around the unit circle. U, a nonlinear functional of the particle number-operators, which obeys the Sine-Gordon equation in (1 + 2) dimensions, is constructed. Its eigenvalues on N-particle states in the Fock space are the slower-than-light, N-soliton solutions of the equation. A projection operator (a nonlinear functional of U), which vanishes on the single-particle subspace, is a mass-density generator. Its eigenvalues on multi-particle states play the role of the mass density of structures that emulate free, spatially extended, relativistic particles. The simplicity of the quantum-mechanical system allows for the incorporation of perturbations with particle interactions, which have the capacity to “annihilate” and “create” solitons – an effect that does not have an analog in perturbed classical nonlinear evolution equations.

The Wigner Transform of Soliton Solutions for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

Hidetoshi Konno, Peter S. Lomdahl

The Wigner function, a kind of wavelet transform is studied for one- and two-soliton solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The exact expression of the Wigner transform for the one-soliton solution is obtained. The features of soliton-soliton interaction of different two-soliton states, the states of coherence analogous to that of two-localized wave packets in quantum mechanics, are displayed. Suitability of this transform for analyzing “ soliton ” in open systems is also discussed.

Weyl quantization and Wigner distributions on phase space

R. Wezeman

This thesis describes quantum mechanics in the phase space formulation. We introduce quantization and in particular the Weyl quantization. We study a general class of phase space distribution functions on phase space. The Wigner distribution function is one such distribution function. The Wigner distribution function in general attains negative values and thus can not be interpreted as a real probability density, as opposed to for example the Husimi distribution function. The Husimi distribution however does not yield the correct marginal distribution functions known from quantum mechanics. Properties of the Wigner and Husimi distribution function are studied to more extent. We calculate the Wigner and Husimi distribution function for the energy eigenstates of a particle trapped in a box. We then look at the semi classical limit for this example. The time evolution of Wigner functions are studied by making use of the Moyal bracket. The Moyal bracket and the Poisson bracket are compared in the classical limit. The phase space formulation of quantum mechanics has as advantage that classical concepts can be studied and compared to quantum mechanics. For certain quantum mechanical systems the time evolution of Wigner distribution functions becomes equivalent to the classical time evolution stated in the exact Egerov theorem. Another advantage of using Wigner functions is when one is interested in systems involving mixed states. A disadvantage of the phase space formulation is that for most problems it quickly loses its simplicity and becomes hard to calculate.

Contracted Schrödinger equation in quantum phase‐space

C. Frishberg, Leon W. Cohen

The phase space formulation of quantum mechanics is equivalent to standard quantum mechanics where averages are calculated by way of phase space integration as in the case of classical statistical mechanics. We derive the quantum hierarchy equations, often called the contracted Schrödinger equation, in the phase space representation of quantum mechanics which involves quasi-distributions of position and momentum. We use the Wigner distribution for the phase space function and the Moyal phase space eigenvalue formulation to derive the hierarchy. We show that the hierarchy equations in the position, momentum, and position-momentum representations are very similar in structure. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Relationship between the Wigner function and the probability density function in quantum phase space representation

Qian Shu Li, Gong Min Wei, Li Qiang Lü

This paper discusses the relationship between the Wigner function, along with other related quasiprobability distribution functions, and the probability density distribution function constructed from the wave function of the Schr\"odinger equation in quantum phase space, as formulated by Torres-Vega and Frederick (TF). At the same time, a general approach in solving the wave function of the Schr\"odinger equation of TF quantum phase space theory is proposed. The relationship of the wave functions between the TF quantum phase space representation and the coordinate or momentum representation is thus revealed.
