Abstract

Abstract Certain classical codes can be viewed isomorphically as ideals of group algebras, while studying their algebraic structures help extracting the code properties. Research has shown that this was remarkably efficient in the case when the code generators are idempotents. In quantum error correction, the theory of stabilizer formalism requires classical self-orthogonal additive codes over the finite field GF(4), which, via the lens of group algebras, are essentially $$F_2$$ F 2 -submodules over GF(4). Therefore, this paper provides a classification on idempotents in commutative group algebra GF(4)G, followed by a criterion that allows idempotents to generate stabilizer subgroups. Later, the construction of quantum stabilizer codes is done in the case when G is a cyclic group $$C_n$$ C n , for $$n=2^m-1$$ n = 2 m - 1 and $$n=2^m+1$$ n = 2 m + 1 . Quantum bounds on their burst error minimum distance are subsequently determined.

Quantum error correction via codes over GF(2)

Arijit Chowdhury, Balaji Sundar Rajan

It is well known that n-length stabilizer quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) can be obtained via n-length classical error correction codes (CECCs) over GF(4), that are additive and self-orthogonal with respect to the trace Hermitian inner product. But, most of the CECCs have been studied with respect to the Euclidean inner product. In this paper, it is shown that n-length stabilizer QECCs can be constructed via 3n-length linear CECCs over GF(2) that are self-orthogonal with respect to the Euclidean inner product. This facilitates usage of the widely studied self-orthogonal CECCs to construct stabilizer QECCs. Moreover, classical, binary, self-orthogonal cyclic codes have been used to obtain stabilizer QECCs with guaranteed quantum error correcting capability. This is facilitated by the fact that (i) self-orthogonal, binary cyclic codes are easily identified using transform approach and (ii) for such codes lower bounds on the minimum Hamming distance are known. Several explicit codes are constructed including two pure MDS QECCs.

A construction method for a family of quantum cyclic codes

Xinmei Wang

The problem of finding stabilizer quantum-error-correcting codes can be transformed into the problem of finding classical self-orthogonal linear codes over the Galois field GF(4) under a Hermitian inner product.A classical cyclic code over the field GF(4) is self-orthogonal with respect to the Hermitian inner product iff the generator polynomial of its dual code is a factor of its generator polynomial.Based on this connection,a class of quantum cyclic codes is constructed by finding corresponding classical cyclic codes. Some examples are also given in detail.

Quantum stabiliser codes via concatenation of idempotents in commutative group algebras

Kai Lin Ong

Abstract Group algebras offer a rich algebraic perspective for the study of classical codes. Through this lens, idempotents have been shown to characterise properties of their associated classical codes. However, attempts to extend the use of idempotents to the construction of quantum stabiliser codes have remained limited, arguably due to insufficient variation in their coefficients. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of concatenating idempotents from commutative quaternary group algebras and studies the constructed stabiliser codes. The resulting stabilisers are binary subspaces of the respective group algebras, each generated by a single element whose components are distinct idempotents that together exhibit sufficient coefficient variation. Notably, these generators may be units, which leads to an interesting deviation from the conventional setting of idempotents as zero-divisors. The potential of these generators in stabiliser formalism are studied via an underlying group involution. It is proven that the parameters of the quantum stabiliser codes can be characterised by the idempotents involved.

An Introduction to Quantum Error Correction

Daniel Gottesman

Quantum states are very delicate, so it is likely some sort of quantum error correction will be necessary to build reliable quantum computers. The theory of quantum error-correcting codes has some close ties to and some striking differences from the theory of classical error-correcting codes. Many quantum codes can be described in terms of the stabilizer of the codewords. The stabilizer is a finite Abelian group, and allows a straightforward characterization of the error-correcting properties of the code. The stabilizer formalism for quantum codes also illustrates the relationships to classical coding theory, particularly classical codes over GF(4), the finite field with four elements.

Quantum stabilizer codes construction from Hermitian self-orthogonal codes over GF(4)

Duc Manh Nguyen, Sunghwan Kim

In order to construct quantum error correction code, we consider additive codes over Galois field GF(4), which are self-orthogonal with respect to a certain Hermitian product. In this paper, we first propose a new approach to the construction of Hermitian self-orthogonal linear codes, applying the extension to get a longer length, and prove the codes have good minimum distance. Then, we investigate the corresponding quantum stabilizer codes from the classical codes. Six optimal quantum stabilizer codes have been achieved to show the effectiveness of the proposed construction.

Error Correcting Quantum Codes and Algebraic Curves

Artur Elezi

The goal of this paper is twofold. First, to provide a self contained, detailed and rigorous mathematical introduction to some aspects of the quantum error-correcting codes and especially quantum stabilizer codes and their connection to self-orthogonal linear codes. This has been done without venturing that much, if at all, into the world of physics. While most of the results presented are not new, it is not easy to extract a precise mathematical formulation of results and to provide their rigorous proofs by reading the vast number of papers in the field, quite a few of which are written by computer scientists or physicists. It is this formulation and proofs, some of which are new, that we present here. Techniques from algebra of finite fields as well as representations of finite abelian groups have been employed. The second goal is the construction of some stabilizer codes via self-orthogonal linear codes associated to algebraic curves.
