ON THE FEATURES OF THE FUNCTIONING OF CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE CONTEXT OF QUANTUM INFORMATION

Abstract

The article deals with the relationship of ideas about the quantum-physical foundations of the functioning of consciousness with quantum computer science. The fundamental question of the nature of consciousness as a unique phenomenon characterized by self-development, adaptive functions, nonlinearity and openness remains debatable. Modern research on the so-called “quantum concept of consciousness” opens up the prospect for subsequent discoveries of new, unsolved patterns. At the junction of quantum mechanics, psychophysics and neurobiology, an interdisciplinary field of knowledge is now being formed and dynamically developing. The comprehension of the methods and formalisms developed within its framework in application to the ontological aspect of the essential nature of consciousness is chosen as the subject of research in this work. The universal laws of quantum mechanics, the concepts of quantum entanglement and the nonlocality of the wave function are important tools for understanding the role of the observer's consciousness at the quantum-molecular level (nanoscale) of consciousness functioning. The article shows that the principles of quantum data processing have a certain superiority over traditional methods of information processing and can become a significant analogue in the development of the quantum concept of consciousness. The characteristic processes of the “work” of consciousness are revealed, which cannot be comprehended without reference to entropic processes and quantum jumps at bifurcation points, entailing stochastic choice, i.e. information generation. The hypothesis of the quantum concept of consciousness is considered in relation to the macroscopic nature of consciousness, its synergetic complexity. The main conclusion is connected with the idea that the modern understanding of consciousness is undergoing many changes due to the widespread introduction of new knowledge in the field of computer science, quantum physics, and neuroscience.

The Quantum Concept of Consciousness: For or Against?

Victor N. Knyazev, Galina Vasilevna Parshikova

The study examines a problematic hypothesis of possible approaches to identifying the quantum physical foundations of the functioning of consciousness. The authors proceed from the fact that in modern conditions, not a single science, nor all sciences taken together, gives a final answer to the question of the “mechanism” of the origin of thought. However, this does not mean at all that research in this direction needs to be stopped. The authors express confidence that modern and subsequent research into the “quantum concept of consciousness” will lead to the identification of previously unknown patterns, opening the way to the formation of new principles and approaches. As an example, the corresponding Penrose - Hameroff concept is considered. Quantum mechanics complements the tools of neurobiology and other branches of neuroscience, which together form an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that is dynamically growing and developing. The authors are not apologists for the omnipotence of quantum physics. Quantum correlates of consciousness actually mean that it is not today’s quantum mechanics itself that explains the emergence of mental states, but the fact that in the birth of these states it is essential that in the very process of the formation of neurodynamic impulses in the neurons of the cerebral cortex that generate mental states, there are processes of quantum nature. It should also be recognized that the quantum-molecular level (nanolevel) of processes in the neurons of the brain really exists and it is this that is the source of proto-consciousness. Science strives to move forward, new research programs are emerging within the framework of quantum biology, quantum psychology, quantum information science, which in turn can shed light on the hypothesis of the “quantum concept of consciousness.”

Is It Possible to Apply Quantum Mechanics to Explain Consciousness and Brain Functioning?

Valentín A. Bazhanov

The article aims to discuss the problem of applicability of quantum-mechanical concepts to the analysis of the mechanisms of brain and the nature of consciousness. Are these tools sufficient and adequate to solve this problem? We claim that despite numerous attempts made in this direction it is difficult to speak about any significant progress. Although the intersection and active interaction between quantum theory and neuroscience forms a kind of “zone of exchange”, allowing us to claim the formation of “quantum neurophysics”, physicalism and reductionism, actually imposed by quantum mechanics, allow us to discuss the nonlocality of neural networks only by analogy with quantum nonlocality. This discussion actually do not touch the underlying machinery of the functionality of these networks, including the processes of their synchronization. Although J. Fodor’s concept of modularity in the context of holism philosophy and ideas of biocultural co-constructivism lead to the idea that it is possible to apply N. Bohr’s complementarity to comprehension of brain functions, but in reality the presence of quantum effects at the level of brain as an integral system is not so obvious. The expression of thought in a word, which means the transformation of a continuous spectrum into a discrete one, only superficially resembles the process of wave function reduction. We can conclude that the boundaries of applicability of quantum-mechanical representations pass through the conceptual space, which does not capture to advance extent the essential features of neither brain, nor consciousness.

Quantum ontology of «elementary intelligence»

Alexander N. Spaskov

The article provides a critique of atomistic ontology and reductionism in explaining the nature of life and consciousness. As an alternative direction based on organic ontology, fundamental psychophysical principles and quantum-information approach, the concept of quantum monadology is proposed, the metaphysical foundations of which are given in the works of G. Leibniz and N. Lossky. A model of «elementary intelligence» in complementary unity with the elementary body is proposed. The premise of this representation is the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics. The wave function is interpreted as a prototype of consciousness, and the observed physical quantities are interpreted as a prototype of the material body of the monad given in its phenomenal experience. The probabilistic nature of the behavior of quantum particles is explained by the objective existence of chance and the activity of quantum objects, which, perhaps, should be considered as a potential basis for the formation of the psyche. To characterize the internal state of the monad, the concept of a color charge is introduced, which has the meaning of a binary information code, and the principle of dynamic complementarity is formulated. A model of the elementary «life cycle» of a quantum monad is constructed. Elementary intelligence is understood as the ability for intellectual activity, including the processing of information significant for life, as a result of which the existence of quantum monads is maintained and reproduced. A substantial justification of quantum Darwinism is given, and a hypothesis about the genesis and co-evolutionary development of the «elementary psyche» and physical body of monads in the process of global evolution is put forward. A conclusion is made about the possibility of constructing a model of quantum behavior and the synergetic interaction of monads that form more complex systems, as well as about the prospect of developing a quantum ontology of matter and consciousness. The construction of a model of «elementary natural intelligence» will contribute to the identification of fundamental ontological limitations in the development of strong artificial intelligence.

Comprehension of the phenomenon of consciousness within the framework of quantum approach (on the example of the concepts of M. Mensky and R. Penrose – S. Hameroff)

D. S. Garifzyanova

The article considers two modern concepts of consciousness: M. Menski's quantum theory of consciousness and R. Penrose-S. Hameroff's theory of objective reduction of states. Key aspects of the concept of consciousness within the framework of quantum approach are identified and both advantages and disadvantages of each concept are noted. Further prospects for the development of these concepts are presented, the philosophical analysis of which, of course, reflects certain trends in the development of modern science.

Question of Consciousness: to Quantum Mechanics for the Answers

Карпенко Иван Александрович

Abstract The article presents the possible role of consciousness in quantum-mechanical description of physical reality. The widely spread interpretations of quantum phenomena are considered as indicating the apparent connection between conscious processes (such as observation) and the properties of the microcosm. The reasons for discrepancies between the results of observations of the microcosm and macrocosm and the potential association of consciousness with these reasons are closely investigated. The mentioned connection is meant to be interpreted in the sense that the probable requirement for a complete understanding of quantum theory is the adequate description of consciousness within it and that the correct theory of consciousness should include quantum-mechanical theoretical apparatus. In this context, the question about the methods of scientific cognition is discussed, in particular, the problem of the place and the importance of intellectual intuition in science and philosophy of science. The author draws the conclusions about the current state of the “measuring” consciousness. problem in its relationship with

Quantum Consciousness, Brains, and Cognition

Jerome R. Busemeyer, Meijuan Lu

Quantum consciousness concerns both the possible role that quantum mechanics has for understanding consciousness as well as the role that consciousness has for interpreting quantum physics. Quantum brain theories hypothesize that quantum physical processes occur within and between the neurons of the brain and have important effects on cognition as well as consciousness. Quantum cognition is a growing new field in cognitive science concerned with the application of the mathematical principles of quantum theory to human judgment and decision-making behaviour. What do all these theories have to do with each other? Quantum theories of consciousness have more to say about quantum physics than cognitive psychology and conscious experiences. Quantum brain theories have not been sufficiently ‘scaled up’ to provide clear implications for how quantum physical processes generate more complex cognition. Quantum cognition theories have avoided addressing fundamental issues about consciousness and have remained agnostic with respect to the quantum brain hypothesis. This article will address the problem of connecting these ideas together by connecting quantum cognition to the other two topics.
