Micro-integrated photonic modules for quantum technology applications

Martin Gärtner, Marcel Bursy, Nora Goossen-Schmidt +8 more

We present our latest development of photonic modules for quantum technology applications and show first results of their electro-optical performance. Based on the ECDL-MOPA concept, our laser modules combine a high output power with a narrow linewidth. Our compact light control units enable efficient beam conditioning through switching and modulation, utilizing miniaturized acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators. These modules serve various quantum technology applications, e.g. quantum sensing, timing and precision metrology. In addition, our hybrid micro-integration technology allows us to build our modules as compact and robust as it is needed for applications in space.

A Cavity-Integrated High-Speed Low-Loss Optical Switch in Rubidium Vapour

Georgia Booton, Cameron McGarry, Tabijah Wasawo +4 more

The ability to dynamically route and manage optical signals at high speeds with low-loss is a substantial challenge in quantum optics. Existing optical switches, such as electro-optic phase modulators either achieve high-speed or low insertion losses, but rarely both. However, optically-controlled phase modulation in atomic vapour promises a pathway for efficient, high-bandwidth switching [1]. These characteristics are critical for single photon multiplexing in quantum technologies, implementing loop memory schemes and addressing scalability challenges in photonic quantum computation [2]. We present a cavity based system that can deliver high-speed all-optical switching of a signal field with minimal loss by accessing the strong two photon absorption in warm rubidium vapour via a counter-propagating control field.

Electro-optically switchable spatial-mode entangled photon pairs using a modified Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Jasleen Lugani, Sankalpa Ghosh, Krishna Thyagarajan

In this Letter, we propose and analyze a switchable integrated optical waveguide device employing a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer, capable of generating nondegenerate, maximally spatial-mode entangled photon pairs. Using an integrated electro-optic phase modulator, we show the possibility of on-demand switching of spatial-mode entangled state from a Φ+ to a Ψ+ state and vice versa. Such a versatile device with the potential of easy manipulation of the "spatial-mode" degree of freedom, should be very interesting in realizing integrated optical chips for quantum information processing.
