Quantum Machine Learning Classifier and Neural Network Transfer Learning

Pauline Mosley, Avery M. Leider

This chapter explores quantum machine learning (QML) and neural network transfer learning. It begins by describing the potential of QML. The discussion then shifts to transfer learning, leveraging pre-trained neural models across diverse domains. A demonstration of advancements in both fields forms the core of the chapter, showcasing how QML classifiers can be used with classical neural networks for enhanced performance. To improve the accuracy of COVID-19 screening, ensemble method and sliding window mechanism measurements have been employed using computer vision on frequency domain spectrograms of audio files. Parallel with this, the accuracy of these measurements could be improved by quantum machine transfer learning. The chapter describes a case study where a hybrid approach demonstrated significant improvements in data processing accuracy, offering an understanding of practical applications. In conclusion, the authors present ideas on how the combination of QML and transfer learning could unfold new horizons in various fields with complex, large-scale datasets. The chapter concludes with predictions about the trajectory of these technologies, emphasizing their role in shaping the future of transfer learning. This combination of current research and visionary thinking inspires further exploration at the intersection of quantum computing machine learning and neural network transfer learning.

Classification of knee osteoarthritis based on quantum-to-classical transfer learning

Yumin Dong, Xuanxuan Che, Yanying Fu +3 more

Quantum machine learning takes advantage of features such as quantum computing superposition and entanglement to enable better performance of machine learning models. In this paper, we first propose an improved hybrid quantum convolutional neural network (HQCNN) model. The HQCNN model was used to pre-train brain tumor dataset (MRI) images. Next, the quantum classical transfer learning (QCTL) approach is used to fine-tune and extract features based on pre-trained weights. A hybrid quantum convolutional network structure was used to test the osteoarthritis of the knee dataset (OAI) and to quantitatively evaluate standard metrics to verify the robustness of the classifier. The final experimental results show that the QCTL method can effectively classify knee osteoarthritis with a classification accuracy of 98.36%. The quantum-to-classical transfer learning method improves classification accuracy by 1.08%. How to use different coding techniques in HQCNN models applied to medical image analysis is also a future research direction.

Gender Recognition from Facial Images using Hybrid Classical-Quantum Neural Network

Shubham Mittal, Soven Kumar Dana

Gender recognition is an important function in numerous software applications that analyze facial images. This paper presents a quantum machine learning based solution towards automatic classification of gender from facial images using the hybrid classical-quantum neural network. Here we obtain a binary classifier using the knowledge of a pre-trained off-the-shelf deep neural network (DNN) combined with the transfer learning of a quantum variational circuit. The binary classifier is a hybrid network consisting of convolutional base of the DNN truncated with a dressed quantum circuit. We obtain performance better than previously reported in classifying publicly available dataset of facial images.
