Abstract

As it is well known now1, electron energy spectra from multiphoton ionization (MPI) and Above-Threshold Ionization (ATI) of atoms by subpicosecond pulses reveal Stark-induced resonances and provide an elegant and unique method to investigate AC-Stark shifts of strongly perturbed excited states. In this work we have systematically studied such spectra and their interpretation in the case of MPI of Rare gases with 100 fs, 617 nm pulses. The intensity ranges from 1013 (for xenon) to 1015 W.cm−2 (for helium). The corresponding shifts range from .3 eV to 30 eV and may be, in principle, larger than the atomic ionization potential. Besides the measurement of AC-Stark shifts, the photoelectron spectra provide valuable information about the ionization process itself in a highly non-perturbative regime.

Contrasted behaviour of Stark-induced resonances in multiphoton ionization of krypton

E. Mével, P. Breger, Rusty P. Trainham +5 more

Electron energy spectra from multiphoton ionization of krypton with 617 nm, 70 fs pulses have been recorded over a large intensity range. Near the appearance intensity, the spectra display Stark-induced resonances with s and d states. Up to about 8*10 13 W cm -2 , the spectra broaden and the structures are progressively washed out. Above this intensity, a strong resonance emerges, corresponding to the 4f state for which the static detuning is 2.94 eV, a value larger than the photon energy. The influence of a large static detuning and populations of excited states with shifts different from the threshold shift are discussed.

`Short' pulse MPI of xenon: the ionization channel

H. Rottke, Jan Ludwig, Wolfgang Sandner

We present photoelectron spectra measured by `short' pulse ( ps) MPI of xenon at 526.5 nm excitation wavelength in the intensity range to . Ionization into and channels is observed and resonance structures are found in both ionization channels. They are induced by the AC Stark shift of bound Xe states within the light pulse which brings them into transient n-photon resonance with the Xe ground state. The resonant states are tentatively identified as d- and s-angular momentum states having AC Stark shifts which differ from the shift of the xenon ionization threshold. In the high-intensity limit, ionization into the channel is completely suppressed.

Resonant multiphoton ionisation of xenon with high-intensity femtosecond pulses

Pierre Agostini, A. Antonetti, P. Breger +4 more

The authors report on the intensity and polarisation dependences of electron energy spectra from multiphoton ionisation of xenon with 120 fs pulses at 615 nm. The spectra show a large number of narrow structures assigned to resonances induced by the AC Stark shift. The structures are suppressed with circular polarisation. The maximum shift is observed for the 6s state which is up-shifted by 1.6 eV. The assignments are based on a lowest-order perturbative calculation of the AC Stark shifts.

Experimental study of atomic structure in strong electromagnetic fields

A. Szöke, Otto L. Landen, Michael D. Perry

We have measured the energy spectrum of photoelectrons emitted in multiphoton ionization of atoms by a short-pulse, tunable laser. The spectrum shows prominent resonances, confirming the observations of Freeman et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 1092 (1987)]. The study of the position and intensity of such resonances, as a function of laser wavelength and intensity, probes the structure of the atom in the presence of the strong electromagnetic field and allows their spectroscopic assignment. A systematic study of the ac Stark shift of one of the resonances, the 7s[3/2]\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} level of xenon, is presented.

Excitation and ionization dynamics in short-pulse multiphoton ionization

George N. Gibson, Richard R. Freeman, Thomas J. Mcilrath +1 more

We present results from a time-dependent two-level-plus-continuum model of multiphoton ionization in order to better understand the short-pulse photoelectron spectrum resulting from multiphoton ionization and the role of intermediate states. Both resonant and nonresonant population transfer to the upper state are found to play an important role in the multiphonon ionization process. The dynamic modeling reveals the potential for broadening and shifting peaks in the photoelectron spectrum. However, we conclude that despite the complex dynamics of the excitation, short-pulse photoelectron spectra can be used to measure ac Stark shifts of both ponderomotively and nonponderomotively shifted states in strong laser fields.

Nonperturbative resonant strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen

M G Girju, K. Hristov, Oleg Kidun +1 more

We investigate resonant strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen with respect to the 1s–2p transition. By 'strong' we understand that Rabi periods are executed on a femtosecond time scale. Ionization and AC Stark shifts modify the bound state dynamics severely, leading to nonperturbative signatures in the photoelectron spectra. We introduce an analytical model, capable of predicting qualitative features in the photoelectron spectra such as the positions of the Autler–Townes peaks for modest field strengths. Ab initio solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation show a pronounced shift and broadening of the left Autler–Townes peak as the field strength is increased. The right peak remains rather narrow and shifts less. This result is analysed and explained with the help of exact AC Stark shifts and ionization rates obtained from Floquet theory. Finally, it is demonstrated that in the case of finite pulses as short as 20 fs the Autler–Townes duplet can still be resolved. The fourth generation light sources under construction worldwide will provide bright, coherent radiation with photon energies ranging from a tenth of an meV up to tens of keV, hence covering the regime studied in the paper so that measurements of nonperturbative, relative AC Stark shifts should become feasible with these new light sources.
