Abstract

I present a brief review of recent high intensity experiments showing the participation of multiphoton resonances with bound atomic states. The results compare favorably with some of our calculations on rare gases and alkaline earths.

Doubly charged ions resulting from the multiphoton atomic ionization of alkaline-earth metals

В. В. Суран, І. І. Бондар

The study of the creation of doubly charged ions upon the laser-induced multiphoton ionization of alkaline-earth metals is reviewed. The results show that the features of the creation of the doubly charged ions depend on the spectral range of the ionizing laser radiation. In the ionization of the alkaline-earth atoms by the visible laser radiation, the cascade creation of the doubly charged ions is predominantly implemented when the ions result from the multiphoton ionization of singly charged ions created in the presence of the same laser pulse. In the multiphoton ionization of the alkaline-earth atoms by the IR laser radiation, the two-electron process occurs when the doubly charged ions are directly created from neutral atoms owing to the ionization via induced resonances with strongly perturbed states of these atoms.

Recent advances in Rydberg physics using alkaline-earth atoms

F. B. Dunning, T. C. Killian, S. Yoshida +1 more

Abstract In this brief review, the opportunities that the alkaline-earth elements offer for studying new aspects of Rydberg physics are discussed. For example, the bosonic alkaline-earth isotopes have zero nuclear spin which eliminates many of the complexities present in alkali Rydberg atoms, permitting simpler and more direct comparison between theory and experiment. The presence of two valence electrons allows the production of singlet and triplet Rydberg states that can exhibit a variety of attractive or repulsive interactions. The availability of weak intercombination lines is advantageous for laser cooling and for applications such as Rydberg dressing. Excitation of one electron to a Rydberg state leaves behind an optically active core ion allowing, for high- L states, the optical imaging of Rydberg atoms and their (spatial) manipulation using light scattering. The second valence electron offers the possibility of engineering long-lived doubly excited states such as planetary atoms. Recent advances in both theory and experiment are highlighted together with a number of possible directions for the future.

Route to direct multiphoton multiple ionization

P. Lambropoulos, Georgios M. Nikolopoulos, K. G. Papamihail

We address the concept of direct multiphoton multiple ionization in atoms exposed to intense, short-wavelength radiation and explore the conditions under which such processes dominate over the sequential. Their contribution is shown to be quite robust, even under intensity fluctuations and interaction volume integration, and reasonable agreement with experimental data is also found.

Recent progresses of ultracold two-electron atoms

Chengdong He, Elnur Hajiyev, Zejian Ren +2 more

Abstract In this topical review, we discuss the recent advances in ultracold two-electron atoms. Owing to their unique electronic level structure and relevant narrow optical transitions, alkaline-earth-like (AEL) atoms with two valence electrons expand our capabilities in exploring unprecedented physical settings, including an emergent SU( N ) symmetry, orbital degrees of freedom with spin-exchange interactions, inter-orbital scattering resonances, and synthetic spin–orbit coupling. Here, we discuss in detail the recent experimental developments and the relevant theoretical works with AEL atoms. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion of the future prospects for studies with AEL atoms.
