Abstract

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the nonlinear dynamics of (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] matter waves excited in a disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) when quantum fluctuations described by the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction are taken into consideration. By using a method of multiple scales, we derive Davey-Stewartson I equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of matter-wave envelopes. We demonstrate that the system supports (2+1)D matter-wave dromions, which are superpositions of a short-wavelength excitation and a long-wavelength mean flow. We found that the stability of the matter-wave dromions can be enhanced by the LHY correction. We also found that such dromions display interesting behaviors of collision, reflection, and transmission when they interact with each other and are scattered by obstacles. The results reported here are useful not only for improving the understanding on the physical property of the quantum fluctuations in BECs, but also for possible experimental findings of new nonlinear localized excitations in systems with long-ranged interactions.

Davey-Stewartson description of two-dimensional nonlinear excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng, Chao Hang

We study nonlinear modulation of collective excitations in disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates with a repulsive interatomic interaction. Using a method of multiple scales we show that the nonlinear evolution of a wave packet, formed by the superposition of short-wavelength excitations, and a long-wavelength mean field, generated by the self-interaction of the wave packet, are governed by Davey-Stewartson (DS) equations. Consequently, two-dimensional soliton (dromion) solutions can develop and propagate. We further derive a set of DS equations with variable coefficients for the situation where a slowly varying trapping potential in transverse directions has been taken into consideration. Finally, the dromion solutions and their stability are investigated by numerical simulations.

(2+1)-Dimensional Envelope Solitons in a Disk-Shaped Bose-Einstein Condensate

Guoxiang Huang

We show that, due to the nonlinear coupling between a wavepacket superposed by short-wavelength collective modes and a long-wavelength mean field generated by the self-interaction of the wavepacket, the (2+1)-dimensional envelope solitons decaying in all spatial directions, i.e., dromions, are possible nonlinear excitations in a disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with a repulsive interatomic interaction.

Two-dimensional solitons in extended GPE models with Lee-Huang-Yang corrections

G. N. Koutsokostas, F. Bristy, E. C. Psychogiou +5 more

We investigate the existence and dynamics of two-dimensional solitary waves in a quantum droplet environment described by the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation featuring logarithmic mean-field and Lee-Huang-Yang interactions. In the modulationally stable regime of the background, we employ suitable multiscale asymptotic methods to derive effective nonlinear integrable models corresponding to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili and Davey-Stewartson equations. Based on these reduced models, we construct approximate analytical solutions describing line solitons, algebraically localized lump solitons, ring solitons, and exponentially localized dromions embedded on the droplet background. The dynamical robustness of these solutions is monitored through numerical simulations. Line, lump and ring solitons stay closest to the theoretical predictions, although progressively deviate due to the emergence of small-amplitude radiation, while dromions depart from their analytical waveform the most, although they roughly maintain their shape. Our results unveil unprecedented multidimensional soliton solutions in models featuring the competition of mean-field and quantum fluctuations and as such are amenable to current ultracold atom experiments.

Vortex Quantum Droplets under Competing Nonlinearities

Gui-hua 桂华 Chen 陈, Hong-cheng 红成 Wang 王, Hai-ming 海明 Deng 邓 +1 more

This concise review summarizes recent advancements in theoretical studies of vortex quantum droplets (VQDs) in matter-wave fields. These are robust self-trapped vortical states in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) with intrinsic nonlinearity. Stability of VQDs is provided by additional nonlinearities resulting from quantum fluctuations around mean-field states, often referred to as the Lee–Huang–Yang (LHY) corrections. The basic models are presented, with emphasis on the interplay between the mean-field nonlinearity, LHY correction, and spatial dimension, which determines the structure and stability of VQDs. We embark by delineating fundamental properties of VQDs in the 3D free space, followed by consideration of their counterparts in the 2D setting. Additionally, we address stabilization of matter-wave VQDs by optical potentials. Finally, we summarize results for the study of VQDs in the single-component BEC of atoms carrying magnetic moments. In that case, the anisotropy of the long-range dipole-dipole interactions endows the VQDs with unique characteristics. The results produced by the theoretical studies in this area directly propose experiments for the observation of novel physical effects in the realm of quantum matter, and suggest potential applications to the design of new schemes for processing classical and quantum information.

Quantum droplets of quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

M Edmonds, T. Bland, Nicholas G. Parker

Ultracold dipolar droplets have been realized in a series of ground-breaking experiments, where the stability of the droplet state is attributed to beyond-mean-field effects in the form of the celebrated Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction. We scrutinize the dipolar droplet states in a one-dimensional context using a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, and identify experimentally viable parameters for accessing our findings for future experiments. In particular we identify regimes of stability in the restricted geometry, finding multiple roton instabilities as well as regions supporting quasi-one-dimensional droplet states. By applying an interaction quench to the droplet, a modulational instability is induced and multiple droplets are produced, along with bright solitons and atomic radiation. We also assess the droplets robustness to collisions, revealing population transfer and droplet fission.
