Abstract

New geometry for conjugation of mutually-incoherent light beams in photorefractive media is proposed. This geometry is realized experimentally and its theoretical description is given. Comparison between theory and experiment is made.

Theory of photorefractive phase conjugators with mutually incoherent beams

He Qi-Chi

Plane-wave analysis of the recently demonstrated photorefractive phase conjugators with mutually incoherent beams is presented. Based on four-wave mixing theory, two important configurations, the bird-wing phase conjugator and the mutually incoherent beam coupler are investigated by solving coupled nonlinear equations with beam depletion and absorption. Various intensity performances are theoretically analyzed. Different configurations of this kind of mutually incoherent phase conjugators are compared. Competition of different processes is discussed. Experimental data are well fitted by the theory.>

Incoherent phase-conjugate backscattering in photorefractive media

Mordechai Segev, Amnon Yariv

Phase-conjugate backscattering in photorefractive (PR) materials, which can be considered a special case of two-beam coupling, involves interaction between two counterpropagating beams via light-induced reflection gratings. Since this backscattering results from interference between the beams, it requires mutual temporal coherence. Moreover, when one beam is self-generated, the input beam is required to have a long coherence length.

Phase conjugation involving incoherent counterpropagating beams in photorefractive media

Mordechai Segev, Amnon Yariv

We propose and analyze a new type of phase conjugation between counterpropagating beams in photorefractive materials based on diffraction from transmission gratings only. This effect does not require temporal coherence between the counterpropagating beams and may occur spontaneously, with no external seeding, even with wide (frequency) band light sources.
