Suppression of line broadening by fast Rabi flopping effects

Abstract

We report a mechanism that leads to the suppression of line broadening effects. We show that a strong competition between the effects of coherent and incoherent pumps can lead to suppression of spontaneous emission or to narrowing of the spectral profiles. Consider the interaction of a system with a broadband incoherent pump, the effects of which can be accounted for by changing the relaxation times T1, T2 in the Bloch equations. For example, for radiative relaxation (rate 2γ) we have where | x | is the Rabi frequency associated with the broadband pump, and Γ is its bandwidth. The spontaneous emission spectrum from such a system in the presence of a coherent drive is the Mollow spectrum with the broadband pump contributing an amount β to the widths of the peaks. We demonstrate that the effects of β can be suppressed if the strength of the coherent pump is such that many Rabi oscillations are possible within the coherence time of the incoherent pump. We show this explicitly by obtaining exact results for spontaneous emission from a model system.

Suppression of the line broadening by fast Rabi flopping effects

G. S. Agarwal, Sunita Singh

We report on a new mechanism that can lead to line narrowing. We show that the line-broadening effects associated with a broadband source can be suppressed by irradiating the system with a coherent pump. We give explicit results for this suppression in spontaneous emission from a two-level system.

Rabi sideband narrowing via strongly driven resonance fluorescence in a narrow-bandwidth squeezed vacuum

A. S. Parkins

We examine resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom in a squeezed vacuum, under the condition that the squeezing bandwidth is much narrower than the Rabi splitting of the Mollow triplet. For a suitable choice of the relative phase between the squeezed vacuum and coherent driving field, we find significant narrowing of the Rabi peaks and inhibited population decay. These results are in marked contrast to previous broadband squeezing analyses, which predict strong broadening of the Rabi peaks and enhanced population decay. We explore the connection between our work and that on the dynamical suppression of spontaneous emission via strongly driven resonance fluorescence in a cavity [Lewenstein, Mossberg, and Glauber, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 775 (1987)]. By modifying this work to incorporate squeezing of the cavity modes, we are able to combine the features of both systems, and thereby predict strong inhibition of the decay of all three components of the Bloch vector in a possible experimental configuration.

Interference effects on the spontaneous emission spectrum from two coupled upper levels

Shi-Yao Zhu

Interference effects between decay processes from two upper levels, which are coupled by the same vacuum modes to a lower level and are driven by a strong coherent field, on the spontaneous emission spectrum have been studied. The interference could lead to population trapping in the upper levels, two dark lines in the spectrum and spectral narrowing. The spectral narrowing depends on the ratio of the two upper levels' decay rates and the Rabi frequency of the driving field. One can change the spectrum by varying the Rabi frequency, an experimentally controllable parameter.

Incoherent pump effects in AM spectroscopy

Stephen H. Chakmakjian, Karl W. Koch, Carlos R. Stroud +1 more

The response of three- and four-level homogeneous laser systems to an amplitude modulated field in the presence of an incoherent pump is treated using a rate equation model. A spectral hole due to the finite bandwidth of the population oscillations is observed with a modulated field at either the pump or the laser frequency. The spectral width of the hole broadens at a rate proportional to the sum of the dimensionless intensities of the pump and laser fields. The power levels required to broaden the 1/T1 hole in various laser systems is presented. The experimental implications of this result are discussed.

Modification and control of coherence effects in the spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level atom at weak field regime

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, Pradipta Panchadhyayee

Abstract It has been shown that coherence effects have a marked influence in the spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level Λ -type atom driven by weak coherent and incoherent fields. Phase dependent evolution of interference effects leading to spectral narrowing, generation of spectral hole and dark line are exhibited in the present scheme when the atom does not interact with the incoherent fields. The basic mechanism underlying this scheme seems to be appropriate for a phaseonium. Apart from phase-coherence introduced in the system the phenomenon of line narrowing, in the presence of weak incoherent pumping, can be achieved in a different way as a consequence of two competitive resonant effects: sharp non-Lorentzian and symmetric Fano-like-resonance contributions to the line shape. In both the situations, the evolution of narrow structures in the line shape can be achieved even when the emission is influenced by the dephasing of Raman coherence.

Dissipative Rabi model for deep strong far-off-resonant driving

A. P. Saǐko, Siarhei A. Markevich, Ryhor Fedaruk

We study the dissipative Rabi model under deep strong far-off-resonant driving when the driving frequency and strength exceed significantly the qubit transition frequency. We find analytical expressions for the density matrix, the steady-state first-order field correlation function and the multiphoton emission spectrum. This spectrum consists of a series of narrow delta-like lines, caused by coherent processes and of Lorenzian peaks resulted from the incoherent scattering of photons. It is shown that the width of emission lines as well as the decay rate of the time oscillations in the population difference have oscillating dependence on the driving strength. We show how the features of this dependence are controlled by the relative rates of energetic relaxation and pure dephasing.
