Non Critical Slowing Down in Optical Bistability

Abstract

We report on the switching dynamics of a bistable device in the case when a holding power maintains the system in a stable state of the lower branch and a pulse address of finite duration (T) brings it close to the unstable state of the middle branch. For a critical pulse duration (Tc) the pulse exactly brings the device in the unstable state where it would indefinitely remain in the absence of fluctuations. For pulse duration close to Tc the device switches up to the upper branch (T>Tc) or relaxes to the initial state (T<Tc) after a lethargy time which follows a logarithmic law {1,2}.

Optical bistability switching with external noise

In an optically bistable system the switching time, i.e., the time required to switch the system between the off and on states, is a sensitive measure of noise and fluctuations. For a control parameter close to the threshold of the bistable operation, the critical slowing down takes place and large fluctuations in the switching times are originated.

Fast Switchings and Slowing Down in Thermal Optical Bistable Devices

A. Daunois, J.-Y. Bigot, J. B. Grün

The switching dynamics of thermally induced optical bistability in ZnSe nonlinear interference filters is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The device, maintained on its low transmission level by a cw argon laser beam, is switched on its high transmission level by an external light pulse. Either a very fast switching or an important slowing down are obtained when the holding cw intensity or the switching pulse energy are well chosen. This variation of the switching times is analyzed theoretically and observed experimentally.

Switching dynamics of thermally induced optical bistability: Theoretical analysis

J.-Y. Bigot, A. Daunois, J. B. Grün

A model based on the heat diffusion equation is used to describe the switching dynamics in thermally induced optical bistable devices. In this model, energy is brought to the device by a cw holding light beam and by a light pulse. In this case, it is shown that switching times can be much faster than the thermal relaxation constant of the material. This model, applied to nonlinear ZnSe interference filters, explains the switching behavior recently observed.

Dispersive optical bistability: Stability of the steady states

We study the semiclassical mean-field theory of single-mode dispersive optical bistability in the limit of a fully developed hysteresis cycle (i.e., in the limit of large values of the bistability parameter C) and when all decay rates have comparable magnitude. We locate (i) on the upper branch instabilities leading to time periodic regimes, (ii) on the lower branch instabilities leading to a switching before the limit point is reached. None of these instabilities are observed in the case of purely absorptive optical bistability.

The dynamics of a bistable optical system suddenly brought in a domain of multimode instability is studied both experimentally and numerically. The sine-wave self-pulsing is shown to start with an initial amplitude dramatically depending on the switching conditions.
