Transverse Optical Bistability in Gold Colloid Due to Self-Focusing

Abstract

We demonstrated transverse optical bistability in a red gold colloid[1] experimentally for the first time. The threshold of optical bistability is 300 milliwatts and the switching time is 0.1 milliseconds. The optical bistability is due to the self-focusing effect in the red gold colloid. Figure 1 shows a strong self-focusing effect.

Transverse optical bistability switching dynamics of self-focusing counter-propagating laser beams in a nonlinear medium are investigated by analytical and numerical methods. Cavityless transverse optical bistability in a thin silicon carbide crystal has been implemented experimentally with a characteristic switching time of about 10-10 s.

Transverse effects and slowing down in the switching dynamics of induced absorption optical bistability

M. Wegener, Claus F. Klingshirn, A. Daunois +3 more

The switching dynamics of photothermal-induced absorption optical bistability is studied in CdS. The bistable element being held near its switching threshold is switched by a pulse of an excimer laser, which can be regarded as δ shaped in time with respect to the thermal relaxation time of the sample. The dynamics of the switching process is influenced by the transverse relaxation of the temperature in the sample. Under appropriate conditions either a slowing down or a fast switching is observed.

Laser Spot Size Dependence, Nonlocality And Saturation Effects In Transverse Optical Bistability

I. C. Khoo, T H. Liu, Ping Yan +1 more

We present here a theoretical discussion of the effect of nonlocality and saturation in transverse optical bistability. It is found that the switching conditions, switching power and characteristics are considerably different from the situation where these effects are not accounted for. We also include an analytical study of the transverse self-phase modulation effect and relate the key parameters explicitly to the transverse bistability switching condition and bistability.

Optical Bistability Based on Self-Focusing

P. W. E. Smith, D. J. Eilenberger

Two years ago, the first proposal and demonstration of self-focusing optical bistability was published.1 In this paper it was shown that a self-focused beam in a nonlinear medium would exhibit hysteresis if the beam were reflected back on itself. The effect was demonstrated using a dye laser beam and Na vapor as the nonlinear medium. The optical hysteresis observed is in good qualitative agreement with a recently - published analysis of this system.2 By taking account of the saturation of the nonlinearity, more complex behavior has been predicted.2 This behavior is due to oscillations of the spot size as the self-focused beam propagates through the nonlinear medium. In this paper we report on our experimental studies of optical multistability due to these spot size oscillations.
