Multiphoton interferometry

Abstract

Recent theoretical work has shown that there is an intrinsic difference in the nature of the information one can obtain from one-photon, two-photon, and multi-photon interference experiments. Using parametric down conversion, many laboratories have recently performed two-photon interference experiments. We shall discuss these and some proposals for three-photon interferometers and shall point out the kind of non-classical information one could hope to attain from such devices.

The Role of Pump Coherence in a Two-photon Interference Experiment

Junlin Liang, S. M. Hendrickson, T. B. Pittman

We perform a parametric down-conversion two-photon interference experiment using two unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers and a short-coherence-length continuous-wave pump. The experiment explores the role of the pump coherence in two-photon interferometry.

Interference contrast in multisource few-photon optics

Wiesław Laskowski, Marcin Wieśniak, Marek Żukowski +2 more

Many recent experiments employ several parametric down-conversion (PDC) sources to get multiphoton interference. Such interference has applications in quantum information. We study here how effects due to photon statistics, misalignment and partial distinguishability of the PDC pairs originating from different sources may lower the interference contrast in multiphoton experiments.

MULTI-PHOTON INTERFERENCE AND TEMPORAL DISTINGUISHABILITY OF PHOTONS

Z. Y. Ou

A number of recent interference experiments involving multiple photons are reviewed. These experiments include generalized photon bunching effects, generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effects and multi-photon interferometry for demonstrations of multi-photon de Broglie wavelength. The multi-photon states used in these experiments are from two pairs of photons in parametric down-conversion. We find that the size of the interference effect in these experiments, characterized by the visibility of the interference pattern, is governed by the degree of distinguishability among different pairs of photons. Based on this discovery, we generalize the concept of multi-photon temporal distinguishability and relate it to a number of multi-photon interference effects. Finally, we make an attempt to interpret the coherence theory by multi-photon interference via the concept of temporal distinguishability of photons.

Quantum optics experiments with single photons for undergraduate laboratories

Enrique J. Galvez, M. Beck

We present new results of interference experiments for undergraduates that underscore the quantum nature of the light. The experiments use parametric down-conversion to generate pairs of correlated photons. The experiments involve one- and two-photon interference schemes that rely on first and second-order coherence effects. They can be used as a complement to teaching quantum mechanics or quantum optics.

EPR experiment and 2-photon interferometry: Report of a 2-photon interference experiment

Yanhua H. Shih, Morton H. Rubin, Alexander V. Sergienko

After a very brief review of the historical Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) experiments, a new two-photon interference type EPR experiment is reported. A two-photon state was generated by optical parametric down conversion. Pairs of light quanta with degenerate frequency but divergent directions of propagation were sent to two independent Michelson interferometers. First and second order interference effectors were studied. Different than other reports, we observed that the second order interference visibility vanished when the optical path difference of the interferometers were much less than the coherence length of the pumping laser beam. However, we also observed that the second order interference behaved differently depending on whether the interferometers were set at equal or different optical path differences.

Multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel Interferometry

Walborn, S P, Nogueira, W A T, De Oliveira, A N +2 more

We review some recent experiments based upon multimode two-photon interference of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The new element provided by these experiments is the inclusion of the transverse spatial profiles of the pump, signal and idler fields. We discuss multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, and show that the transverse profile of the pump beam can be manipulated in order to control two-photon interference. We present the basic theory and experimental results as well as several applications to the field of quantum information.
