Signatures beyond the rotating-wave approximation in retrieving the photoionization time delay from an ω−2ω interferometric method

Mingqing Liu, Xinqiang Wang, Lijuan Jia +2 more

We propose a protocol to retrieve the photoionization time delay that employs a pair of oppositely circularly polarized attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses with frequencies $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and $2\ensuremath{\omega}$. By numerically solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, we observe an oscillation in the energy-resolved photoionization time delay encoded in the relative optical phase between $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and $2\ensuremath{\omega}$ pulses when the emission asymmetry of the photoelectron is maximal. Our results show that this oscillation arises from the interference between two one-photon ionization pathways from the ground state due to the broad bandwidth effect of an ultrashort pulse: the absorption of one left-handed circularly polarized photon and the emission of one right-handed circularly polarized photon. The latter is regarded as a consequence of the breakdown of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). We compare the perturbation theory with and without RWA and demonstrate that photon emission plays a crucial role in retrieving photoionization time delay. Our study enriches the underlying physics of attosecond spectroscopy and provides a framework for accurately measuring photoionization time delays in atoms and molecules.

Phase differences in the photoemission from krypton in the fine-structure-split ionization channels P3/22 and P1/22

M. Baggash, H. Rottke

Using the reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBITT) technique, a nonzero phase difference is observed in the two-photon ionization transition of krypton atoms into the ionization channels $^{2}P_{1/2}$ and $^{2}P_{3/2}$ when an electron is removed from the $4p$ shell. The phase difference is studied for excitation energies ranging from $\ensuremath{\approx}18\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ up to $\ensuremath{\approx}28\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. The phase differences are found to depend on the relative directions of linear polarization of the photoionization laser pulses and the pulses inducing the subsequent continuum-continuum transition. The experimental results are compared to phase differences calculated on the basis of dipole matrix elements for photoionization and scattering phases known for krypton from earlier experiments. The results indicate that the RABBITT phase differences do not give an obvious direct access to time-delay differences in the primary photoionization step of the atom.

Coherence and interference in a Rydberg atom in a strong laser field: excitation, ionization, and emission of light

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Misha Ivanov

Excitation and photoionization of Rydberg wave packets are described. Interference of bound-free transitions from many coherently populated Rydberg levels is shown to affect the dependence of the photoionization probability on the duration of interaction. Strong-field interference effects in such a system are described also. The most important of these is the field-induced interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong ionizing field. The intensity range in which this effect can exist is determined. The results derived are used for a qualitative model describing supercontinuum emission in the process of multiphoton ionization.

Using the reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBITT) technique, a nonzero phase difference is observed in the two-photon ionization transition of krypton atoms into the ionization channels 2P1/2^{2}P_{1/2}2P1/2 and 2P3/2^{2}P_{3/2}2P3/2 when an electron is removed from the 4p4p4p shell. The phase difference is studied for excitation energies ranging from $\ensuremath{\approx}18\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ up to $\ensuremath{\approx}28\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$.
