Abstract

The multimode instability in optical bistability is a relevant example of nondegenerate four-wave mixing, which allows for a fully quantum microscopic theory. We calculate the spectrum of the intensity fluctuations beyond the instability threshold .

Quantum Noise Reduction in Nondegenerate Four-wave Mixing above Threshold

Massimo Brambilla, G. Strini, L. A. Lugiato +1 more

It is well known that nondegenerate four-wave mixing is one of the main mechanisms to produce nonclassical states of the electromagnetic field. As a matter of fact, the squeezing effect was first observed in this configuration1. Recently, sub-shot noise character in the fluctuations in the difference of the intensities of the two signal beams has been experimentally detected2, in analogy with the well known case of nondegenerate parametric oscillators3.

Sub-shot-noise intensity fluctuations in four-wave mixing

Weiping Zhang, Daniel F. Walls

We calculate the spectrum of fluctuations in the intensity difference of two weak fields generated in nondegenerate four-wave mixing in an atomic system. The effects of spontaneous emission and Doppler broadening are included. The conditions for optimum noise suppression below the shot-noise level are discussed.

Squeezing in nondegenerate four-wave mixing

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

Ways to minimize spontaneous-emission noise due to quantum fluctuations in the medium are a major consideration in experiments designed to produce squeezed states of light. Motivated by the recent experiments of Slusher et al. we present a fully quantized model of nondegenerate four-wave mixing. We show that the spontaneous-emission noise, important at higher intensities in the degenerate case, may be minimized in the nondegenerate case for certain regimes of cavity and medium parameters.

Squeezing of classical noise by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in an optical fiber

M. D. Levenson, Robert M. Shelby, Stephen H. Perlmutter

Nondegenerate four-wave mixing in an optical fiber is shown to attenuate one quadrature of random sideband fluctuations created by external modulators. A theory of the nonlinear interaction that includes nonlinear dispersion fits the results. Analogous experiments on quantum noise inputs should prove successful.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate four-wave mixing in semiconductors

A. E. Paul, Markus Lindberg, Sunghyuck An +2 more

A quantum theory of nondegenerate four-wave mixing is developed and applied to study a highly excited semiconductor resonator operating below or near the laser threshold. It is found that total carrier-density pulsations allow coherent effects in semiconductors despite the rapid decay of the electron-hole correlations. The output spectrum for a nondegenerate four-wave mixing intracavity experiment is computed and squeezing in the sidemode spectrum is predicted.

Intensity instability and correlation in amplified multimode wave mixing

Haechan An, Hal Owens, Hamza Ather +2 more

The dynamics of optical nonlinearity in the presence of gain and feedback can be complex leading to chaos in certain regimes. Temporal, spectral, spatial, or polarization instability of optical fields can emerge from chaotic response of an optical [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] nonlinear medium placed between two cavity mirrors or before a single feedback mirror. The complex mode dynamics, high-order correlations, and transition to instability in these systems are not well known. We consider a [Formula: see text] medium with amplified four-wave mixing process and study noise and correlation between multiple optical modes. Although individual modes show intensity instability, we observe relative intensity noise reduction close to the standard quantum noise, limited by the camera speed. We observe a relative noise reduction of more than 20 dB and fourth-order intensity correlation between four spatial modes. More than 100 distinct correlated quadruple modes can be generated using this process.
