Abstract

To describe the dynamics of holes in CuO, plancs of high-T,,.supcrconductors we analyse the two-dimensional ¢-J model supplemented with the interaction of holes with nonpolar optical phonons.Elecmentary cxcitations of this modcl arc treated nonadiabatically within the spin-wave approximation on an infinitc squarc latticc by mcans of an itcrative Lanczos algorithm. For paramciter valucs relevant for high-T,.superconductors we have found a sharp crossover in the ground state from a ncarly free cexcitation for small holc-phonon coupling Ю а self-trapped cxcitation for large holc-phonon coupling. In the vicinity of this crossover cocxistence of thesc two types of states and ferron-phonon complexes has been found. We also analysce the dependence of the critical holc-phonon coupling strength on the exchange constant J.

Hole-polaron formation in the two-dimensional Holsteint-Jmodel: A variational Lanczos study

Holger Fehske, Heinrich Röder, Gerhard Wellein +1 more

Polaronic features of dopant-induced charge carriers are manifest in recent experiments on ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4+\mathit{y}}$ and ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ni}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{4+\mathit{y}}$. To study the formation of hole (bi)polarons in such systems exhibiting strong Coulomb interactions, the Holstein t-J model is examined by means of a variational diagonalization technqiue for a wide range of phonon frequencies and electron-phonon (EP) couplings on finite square lattices, up to 18 effective sites in size. Including static displacement field, polaron, and squeezing effects, our approach allows for the description of nearly free polarons in the weak-coupling limit as well as for adiabatic Holstein polarons and nonadiabatic Lang-Firsov polarons in the case of strong EP interactions. At low doping levels and low phonon frequencies we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic spin correlations and EP interactions reinforce each other to the effect of lowering the threshold for polaronic self-localization in a strongly distorted lattice. This is contrasted with the nonadiabatic regime, where we observe the formation of Lang-Firsov polarons with moderate polaronic mass enhancement in a nearly undistorted lattice. In the case of two doped holes, the hole binding energy is analyzed in detail and we find that hole binding is enhanced as a dynamical (static) effect of a rather weak (extremely strong) EP interaction for delocalized (self-trapped) polarons. At quarter-filling we notice, in the adiabatic regime, a sequence of transitions as the EP coupling increases from nearly free mobile polarons to a polaronic superlattice and finally to a charge-separated state. The ordering of polarons disappears at higher phonon frequencies.

The phase diagram of the 2D Holstein-t-J model near half filling

Holger Fehske, Heinrich Röder, Antonis D Mistriotis +1 more

The authors have used an exact diagonalization technique to explore the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Holstein-t-J model near half filling. The nature of the ground state is analysed, calculating self consistently the local lattice distortions, on-site spin and charge densities, as well as the magnetic structure form factor. They demonstrate that doped holes tend to form hole-polaron or bipolaron states. Compared to that in the uncorrelated model (spinless fermions), the critical electron-phonon coupling strength for the self-trapping transition of the doped charge carriers is considerably reduced by the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. The relevance to the cuprate superconductors is discussed.

Polarons and bipolarons in strongly interacting electron-phonon systems

Gerhard Wellein, Heinrich Röder, Holger Fehske

The Holstein Hubbard and Holstein t-J models are studied for a wide range of phonon frequencies, electron-electron, and electron-phonon interaction strengths on finite lattices with up to ten sites by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization. Previously the necessary truncation of the phononic Hilbert space caused serious limitations to either very small systems (four or even two sites) or to weak electron-phonon coupling, in particular in the adiabatic regime. Using parallel computers we were able to investigate the transition from ``large'' to ``small'' polarons in detail. By resolving the low-lying eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and by calculating the spectral function, we can identify a polaron band in the strong-coupling case, whose dispersion deviates from the free-particle dispersion at low and intermediate phonon frequencies. For two electrons (holes) we establish the existence of bipolaronic states and discuss the formation of a bipolaron band. For the two-dimensional Holstein t-J model, we demonstrate that the formation of hole polarons is favored by strong Coulomb correlations. Analyzing hole-hole correlation functions, we find that hole binding is enhanced as a dynamical effect of the electron-phonon interaction. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Electron-Phonon Coupling and a Polaron in the t−J Model: From the Weak to the Strong Coupling Regime

Andrei S. Mishchenko, Naoto Nagaosa

We present numeric results for ground state and angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) for a single hole in the t-J model coupled to optical phonons. The systematic-error-free diagrammatic Monte Carlo method is employed where the Feynman graphs for the Matsubara Green function in imaginary time are summed up completely with respect to phonon variables, while magnetic variables are subjected to the noncrossing approximation. We obtain that at electron-phonon coupling constants relevant for high T(c) cuprates the polaron undergoes a self-trapping crossover to the strong-coupling limit and theoretical ARPES demonstrate features observed in experiment: A broad peak in the bottom of the spectra has momentum dependence which coincides with that of a hole in the pure t-J model.

Optical absorption and single-particle excitations in the two-dimensional Holstein t−J model

B. Bäuml, Gerhard Wellein, Holger Fehske

To discuss the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in systems with strong Coulomb correlations we have performed an extensive numerical study of the two-dimensional Holstein $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. The model describes the interaction of holes, doped in a quantum antiferromagnet, with a dispersionsless optical phonon mode. We apply finite-lattice Lanczos diagonalization, combined with a well-controlled phonon Hilbert space truncation, to the Hamiltonian. The focus is on the dynamical properties. In particular we have evaluated the single-particle spectral function and the optical conductivity for characteristic hole-phonon couplings, spin exchange interactions, and phonon frequencies. The results are used to analyze the formation of lattice hole polarons in great detail. Links with experiments on layered perovskites are made. In addition, we compare the Chebyshev recursion and maximum entropy algorithms, used for calculating spectral functions, with standard Lanczos methods.

Numerical study of the crossover from free electrons to small polarons

Zhou Li

The electron-phonon interaction is one of the fundamental interactions in almost all condensed matter materials. In conventional superconductors, the electron-phonon interaction is the glue that attracts two electrons to one another to form a pair. A strong electron-phonon interaction leads to the concept of a polaron, which is an electron with lattice distortions around it. The small polaron is a polaron with spatial extent comparable to an interatomic dimension of the solid. Evidence for polarons has been identified in many experiments in superconductors and semiconductors. In this thesis we present exact calculations of the polaron. Specifically we have refined Trugman's method to solve the ground state of an electron-phonon coupled system in the whole parameter regime, and we also generalized this method to treat spin-orbit coupled systems. The most difficult regimes, which is the strong-coupling regime and the small phonon frequency limit, have been solved by these refinements. There are three representative kinds of electron-phonon interaction, the Holstein model, the Fr"ohlich model and the BLF-SSH model. In this thesis we have addressed the first and the third one. The second one, the Fr"ohlich model, is very similar to the Holstein model but the interaction is nonlocal. For the Holstein model we have observed the expected smooth crossover from free electrons to small polarons, while for the BLF-SSH model, we have studied the weak coupling regime with perturbation theory and derived a new analytical result for the one-dimensional problem.
