Abstract

We demonstrate entanglement among four sideband spectral modes of twin beams generated in hot rubidium vapor. Parametric oscillation from high gain in a low-finesse cavity enables tailoring quantum states useful for information protocols.

Hidden entanglement in twin beams generated through optical parametric amplification in hot alkali atoms

Proper characterization of quantum correlations in a multimode optical state is critical for applications in quantum information science; however, the most common entanglement measurements can lead to an incomplete state reconstruction. This is the case for the ubiquitous spectral measurement of field quadratures for which a full characterization of the quantum correlations between optical beams is not possible. We demonstrate this effect in twin beams generated through parametric amplification by four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor, showing the role of a frequency dependent gain response. We implement a resonator-based measurement that reveals entanglement between beams that is otherwise hidden by usual spectral measurements. Additionally, this system shows how the phase shifts between the carrier and the sidebands on the involved fields affect the observation of entanglement for different entanglement witnesses, demonstrating the relevance of making a complete state tomography.

Continuous Variable Entanglement in an Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on a Nondegenerate Four Wave Mixing Process in Hot Alkali Atoms

A. Montaña Guerrero, R. L. Rincón Celis, P. Nussenzveig +3 more

We present the measurement of entanglement between twin beams generated with a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) based on four-wave mixing in hot ^{85}Rb vapor above threshold. This is the first measurement of entanglement in an OPO with a χ^{(3)} media above threshold. We reconstruct the covariance matrix for several configurations and based on a full picture of the four side band mode state, we study entanglement between all possible bipartitions. We show a robust generation of entanglement with stronger generation for a specific pair of modes. For this system, we show that atomic density is a determinant factor for the generation and loss of quantum correlations. The generation of entangled fields with an atomic OPO operating close to atomic resonance of alkali atoms enables a natural integration into quantum networks.

Atom-photon pair laser

Thomas Salzburger, Helmut Ritsch

We study the quantum dynamics of an ultracold atomic gas trapped in an optical lattice within an optical high-$Q$ resonator. The atoms are coherently illuminated with the cavity resonance tuned to a blue vibrational sideband so that stimulated gain of the resonator mode is accompanied by vibrational cooling of the atoms. This system exhibits a threshold above which pairwise stimulated generation of a cavity photon and an atom in the lowest vibrational band dominates spontaneous scattering and we find a combination of optical lasing with a buildup of a macroscopic population in the lowest lattice band. Including output coupling of ground-state atoms and replenishing of hot atoms into the cavity volume leads to a coherent, quantum correlated atom-photon pair source very analogous to twin light beam generation in a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator.

Scalable generation of multiple quantum correlated beams from hot rubidium vapor

We report on a scalable method for generating multiple quantum correlated beams by using cascaded four-wave mixing processes in hot rubidium vapor. As the number of quantum modes increases, so does the total degree of quantum correlations.
