Abstract

We investigate the ground states of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) subject to Raman laser induced spin-orbit coupling with mean-field theory. Owing to the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions, the BEC presents remarkable self-organization behavior and thus hosts various exotic phases including vortex with discrete rotational symmetry, stripe with spin helix, and chiral lattices with C4 symmetry. The peculiar chiral self-organized array of square lattice, which spontaneously breaks both U(1) and rotational symmetries, is observed when the contact interaction is considerable in comparison with the spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, we show that the Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in forming rich topological spin textures of the chiral self-organized phases by introducing a channel for atoms to turn on spin flipping between two components. The self-organization phenomena predicted here feature topology owing to spin-orbit coupling. In addition, we find long-lived metastable self-organized arrays with C6 symmetry in the case of strong spin-orbit coupling. We also present a proposal to observe these predicted phases in ultracold atomic dipolar gases with laser-induced spin-orbit coupling, which may stimulate broad theoretical as well as experimental interest.

Ground-state patterns in a Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbit coupling and Lee-Huang-Yang correction

Zeyun Shi, Lu Qin, Xing-Dong Zhao +5 more

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and self-organized pattern formation in nonlinear systems are fundamental phenomena with broad implications. Studying these effects in cold atomic gases, particularly through the optical control of laser-dressed Rydberg atoms, bridges atomic physics and modern optics. Here, we investigate the ground-state matter-wave pattern formation in cold Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with considerations of the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction and Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). A surprising discovery is that the combination of these effects can induce spontaneous symmetry breaking in a plane-wave state of matter waves, giving rise to a variety of exotic self-organized structures, including stripes, positive and negative hexagons, squares, black-eye patterns, and quasi-lattices, among others. Furthermore, we uncover intriguing structural behaviors by considering inter- and intra-specific nonlocal interactions and the hard-core (contact, short-range) and soft-core (long-range) interactions. Our findings advance optical control of quantum matter, with potential applications in atomic-based information processing.

Quantum phases of Bose-Einstein condensates with synthetic spin–orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Chunlei Qu, Kuei Sun, Chuanwei Zhang

The experimental realization of emergent spin-orbit coupling through laser-induced Raman transitions in ultracold atoms paves the way for exploring novel superfluid physics and simulating exotic many-body phenomena. A recent proposal with the use of Laguerre-Gaussian lasers enables another fundamental type of coupling between spin and orbital angular momentum (SOAM) in ultracold atoms. We hereby study quantum phases of a realistic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with this synthetic SOAM coupling in a disk-shaped geometry, respecting radial inhomogeneity of the Raman coupling. We find that the experimental system naturally resides in a strongly interacting regime in which the phase diagram significantly deviates from the single-particle picture. The interplay between SOAM coupling and interaction leads to rich structures in spin-resolved position and momentum distributions, including a stripe phase and various types of immiscible states. Our results would provide a guide for an experimental investigation of SOAM-coupled BECs.

Quantum phases of rotating Raman spin–orbit-coupled dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with Lee–Huang–Yang correction

Yu Zhang, Xianghua Su, Hanlin Chen +3 more

We investigate the ground-state phases and spin textures of rotating binary dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction and Raman-induced spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in a harmonic trap. Without rotation and SOC, the enhanced LHY correction can lead to structural phase transitions of the system. In the presence of SOC, a phase diagram as a function of the Raman coupling and LHY correction strengths is given. It is shown that the system exhibits rich and exotic quantum phases including quantum droplet (QD) phase with hidden vortex-antivortex pairs, droplet-stripe coexistence phase with hidden vortex-antivortex cluster, QD phase with visible triangular vortex lattice, annular stripe phase containing Anderson-Toulouse coreless vortex, and annular phase with vortex-antivortex pair necklace. In particular, for the rotation case, with the variation of Raman coupling strength the system displays complicated ground-state structures, such as layered structure of droplet necklaces and annular stripe with hidden layered vortex necklace and antivortex necklace, toroidal stripe phase with hidden antivortex necklace, and composite phase of visible square antivortex lattice and annular stripe. Furthermore, the system sustains fascinating novel spin textures and skyrmion excitations, including triangular half-antiskyrmion lattice, alternating meron-antimeron necklace, double-layer half-skyrmion necklace, and triangular half-skyrmion lattice.

Two-component ultracold Bose gases with spin-orbit coupling

Giovanni Italo Martone, S. Stringari

These lecture notes provide an introduction to Bose-Einstein condensates with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling. Owing to the interplay between the peculiar single-particle dispersion, featuring a double-minimum structure, and the two-body interaction, these systems possess a complex phase diagram. Three different quantum phases can be observed, i.e., a stripe, a plane-wave, and a single-minimum phase, each characterized by different broken symmetries. The condensate dynamics is also significantly affected by the spin-orbit coupling, as revealed by the behavior of the Bogoliubov spectrum in infinite systems and the behavior of the discretized collective mode frequencies in trapped configurations, especially close to the phase transitions. In turn, the superfluid and rotational properties are also deeply modified by the coupling between the motional and spin degree of freedom. Finally, a special attention is devoted to the stripe phase and its supersolid character, which can be clearly revealed by the study of its dynamic features.

Chiral Supersolid in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose Gases with Soft-Core Long-Range Interactions

Wei Han, Xiao-Fei Zhang, Deng‐Shan Wang +3 more

Chirality represents a kind of symmetry breaking characterized by the noncoincidence of an object with its mirror image and has been attracting intense attention in a broad range of scientific areas. The recent realization of spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases provides a new perspective to study quantum states with chirality. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the combined effects of spin-orbit coupling and interatomic soft-core long-range interaction can induce an exotic supersolid phase in which the chiral symmetry is broken with spontaneous emergence of circulating particle current. This implies that a finite angular momentum can be generated with neither rotation nor effective magnetic field. The direction of the angular momentum can be altered by adjusting the strength of spin-orbit coupling or interatomic interaction. The predicted chiral supersolid phase can be experimentally observed in Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling.

Phase transitions and elementary excitations in spin-1 Bose gases with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling

Zeng-Qiang Yu

We study the ground-state phase diagram and the quantum phase transitions in spin-1 Bose gases with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling. In addition to the Bose-Einstein condensates with uniform density, three types of stripe condensation phases that simultaneously break the U(1) symmetry and the translation symmetry are identified. The transitions between these phases are investigated, and the occurrences of the various tricritical points are predicted. The excitation spectra in the plane-wave phase and the zero-momentum phase show rich roton-maxon structures, and their instabilities indicate the tendency to develop the crystalline order. We propose the atomic gas of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ could be a candidate for observing the stripe condensate with high contrast fringes.
