Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations for the Ising Model with a Transverse Field

Arnold H. Kole

In this thesis, the Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm is introduced. Some key concepts from quantum mechanics are discussed to aid in understanding the method and it is put into the context of the Renormalization Group. The algorithm is discussed from a mostly practical perspective. As a model to test the algorithm, the Ising Model with a Transverse Field was used. This model is interesting because it is one of the simplest one-dimensional models that displays a phase transition at a finite external field. It can also be solved analytically, which makes it possible to easily check the results of DMRG calculations. The DMRG algorithm was implemented from scratch in C++ for the Transverse Field Ising Model. Using this implementation, the errors in DMRG calculations were explored, as well as the phase transition in the Transverse Field Ising Chain.

Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method for 2D Classical Models

Tomotoshi Nishino

The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is applied to the interaction round a face (IRF) model. When the transfer matrix is asymmetric, singular-value decomposition of the density matrix is required. A trial numerical calculation is performed on the square lattice Ising model, which is a special case of the IRF model.

Density-matrix renormalization-group technique with periodic boundary conditions for two-dimensional classical systems

Andrej Gendiar, A. Šurda

The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method with periodic boundary conditions is introduced for two-dimensional (2D) classical spin models. It is shown that this method is more suitable for derivation of the properties of infinite 2D systems than the DMRG with open boundary conditions, despite the fact that the latter describes much better strips of finite width. For calculation at criticality, phenomenological renormalization at finite strips is used together with a criterion for optimum strip width for a given order of approximation. For this width the critical temperature of the 2D Ising model is estimated with seven-digit accuracy for a not too large order of approximation. Similar precision is reached for critical exponents. These results exceed the accuracy of similar calculations for the DMRG with open boundary conditions by several orders of magnitude. The method is applied to the calculation of critical exponents of the $q=3,$ 4 Potts model, as well.
