Abstract

This paper gives a J-spectral factorization condition for the implementation of a strictly proper transfer function matrix as a physically realizable quantum system using only direct feedthrough quantum noise. A necessary frequency response condition is also presented. Examples are included to illustrate the main results.

A Modified Frequency Domain Condition for the Physical Realizability of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

Arash Kh. Sichani, Ian R. Petersen

This paper is concerned with a modified version of the frequency domain physical realizability (PR) condition for linear quantum systems. We consider open quantum systems whose dynamic variables satisfy the canonical commutation relations of an open quantum harmonic oscillator and are governed by linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). In order to correspond to physical quantum systems, these QSDEs must satisfy PR conditions. We provide a relatively simple proof that the PR condition is equivalent to the frequency domain (J,J)-unitarity of the input-output transfer function and orthogonality of the feedthrough matrix of the system without the technical spectral assumptions required in previous work. We also show that the poles and transmission zeros associated with the transfer function of PR linear quantum systems are the mirror reflections of each other about the imaginary axis. An example is provided to illustrate the results.

When do additional quantum noises affect controller performance?

Rebbecca TY Thien, Shanon L. Vuglar, Ian R. Petersen

The introduction of quantum noise in a system is necessary for realizing it as physical quantum system. In general, quantum noise can be detrimental to the performance of a coherent quantum feedback control system. This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for when a quantum system corresponding to a given Linear Time Invariant (LTI) controller can be made physically realizable in the presence of both direct feedthrough quantum vacuum noise and additional quantum vacuum noise such that the additional quantum noise has no effect on the controller output. Furthermore, an example is presented to illustrate our result.

Quantum Noises, Physical Realizability and Coherent Quantum Feedback Control

Shanon L. Vuglar, Ian R. Petersen

Arbitrary linear time invariant systems can be implemented as quantum systems if additional quantum noises are permitted in the implementation. We give several results concerning how many additional quantum noise channels are necessary to implement state space realizations and transfer functions as quantum systems. We also give algorithms to do so. We demonstrate the utility of these results with an algorithm for obtaining a suboptimal solution to a coherent quantum LQG control problem.

A Frequency Domain Condition for the Physical Realizability of Linear Quantum Systems

A. J. Shaiju, Ian R. Petersen

A recently emerging approach to the feedback control of linear quantum systems involves the use of a controller which itself is a quantum linear system. This approach to quantum feedback control, referred to as coherent quantum feedback control, has the advantage that it does not destroy quantum information, is fast, and has the potential for efficient implementation. An important issue which arises both in the synthesis of linear coherent quantum controllers and in the modeling of linear quantum systems, is the issue of physical realizability. This issue relates to the property of whether a given set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations corresponds to a physical quantum system satisfying the laws of quantum mechanics. Under suitable assumptions, the paper shows that the question of physical realizability is equivalent to a frequency domain (J,J) -unitary condition. This is important in controller synthesis since it is the transfer function matrix of the controller which determines the closed loop system behavior.

Direct approach to realizing quantum filters for high-precision measurements

J. D. Bentley, Hendra I. Nurdin, Yanbei Chen +1 more

Quantum noise sets a fundamental limit to the sensitivity of high-precision measurements. Suppressing it can be achieved by using nonclassical states and quantum filters, which modify both the noise and signal response. We find an approach to realizing quantum filters directly from their frequency-domain transfer functions, utilizing techniques developed by the quantum control community. It not only allows us to construct quantum filters that defy intuition, but also opens a path towards the systematic design of optimal quantum measurement devices. As an illustration, we show an optical realization of an active unstable filter with anomalous dispersion, proposed for improving the quantum-limited sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors.
