In this work, we explore the master equation governing open quantum systems dynamics in an alternative form, which preserves the normal-ordered representation of the averaged normal-ordered operators. We derive a linear system of differential equations for the fourth-order moments of corresponding bosonic operators.Polarization moments of the first and the second orders are investigated using plane rotation transformation. We also evaluate the dynamics of the hidden polarization in comparison with the dynamics of usual polarization within open quantum dynamics.

Unfolding system-environment correlation in open quantum systems: Revisiting master equations and the Born approximation

Aravind Plathanam Babu, S. Alipour, A. T. Rezakhani +1 more

Understanding system-environment correlations in open quantum systems is vital for various quantum information and technology applications. However, these correlations are often overlooked or hidden in derivations of open-quantum-system master equations, especially when applying the Born approximation. To address this issue, given a microscopic model, we demonstrate how to retain system-environment correlation within commonly used master equations, such as the Markovian Lindblad, Redfield, second-order time convolutionless, second-order Nakajima-Zwanzig, and second-order universal Lindblad-like equations. We show that each master equation corresponds to a particular approximation on the system-environment correlation operator. In particular, our analysis exposes the form of the hidden system-environment correlation in the Markovian Lindblad equation derived using the Born approximation. We also identify that the processes leading to the Redfield equation yield an inaccurate initial-time system-environment correlation approximation. By fixing this problem, we propose a corrected Redfield equation with an improved prediction for early stages of the time evolution. We further illustrate our results in two examples, which imply that the second-order universal Lindblad-like equation captures correlation more accurately than the other standard master equations. Adjoint master equation for multitime correlators

Ivan V. Panyukov, Vladislav Yu. Shishkov, E. S. Andrianov

The quantum regression theorem is a powerful tool for calculating the multitime correlators of operators of open quantum systems whose dynamics can be described in Markovian approximation. However, the scope of the quantum regression theorem is limited by a particular time order of the operators in multitime correlators and does not include out-of-time-ordered correlators. In this work, we obtain an adjoint master equation for multitime correlators that applies to out-of-time-ordered correlators. We show that this equation can be derived for various approaches to the description of the dynamics of open quantum systems, such as the global or local approach. We show that the adjoint master equation for multitime correlators is self-consistent. Namely, the final equation does not depend on how the operators are grouped inside the correlator and it coincides with the quantum regression theorem for the particular time ordering of the operators.

Non-Markovian finite-temperature two-time correlation functions of system operators: Beyond the quantum regression theorem

Hsi‐Sheng Goan, Po‐Wen Chen, Chung-Chin Jian

An extremely useful evolution equation that allows systematically calculating the two-time correlation functions (CF's) of system operators for non-Markovian open (dissipative) quantum systems is derived. The derivation is based on perturbative quantum master equation approach, so non-Markovian open quantum system models that are not exactly solvable can use our derived evolution equation to easily obtain their two-time CF's of system operators, valid to second order in the system-environment interaction. Since the form and nature of the Hamiltonian are not specified in our derived evolution equation, our evolution equation is applicable for bosonic and/or fermionic environments and can be applied to a wide range of system-environment models with any factorized (separable) system-environment initial states (pure or mixed). When applied to a general model of a system coupled to a finite-temperature bosonic environment with a system coupling operator L in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian, the resultant evolution equation is valid for both L = L(†) and L ≠ L(†) cases, in contrast to those evolution equations valid only for L = L(†) case in the literature. The derived equation that generalizes the quantum regression theorem (QRT) to the non-Markovian case will have broad applications in many different branches of physics. We then give conditions on which the QRT holds in the weak system-environment coupling case and apply the derived evolution equation to a problem of a two-level system (atom) coupled to the finite-temperature bosonic environment (electromagnetic fields) with L ≠ L(†).

Quantum mechanics in general quantum systems (III): open system dynamics

An Min Wang

We investigate the exact solution, perturbation theory and master equation of open system dynamics based on our serial studies on quantum mechanics in general quantum systems [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611216 and quant-ph/0611217]. In a system-environment separated representation, a general and explicit solution of open system dynamics is obtained, and it is an exact solution since it includes all order approximations of perturbation. In terms of the cut-off approximation of perturbation and our improved scheme of perturbation theory, the improved form of the perturbed solution of open systems absorbing the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations is deduced. Moreover, only under the factorizing initial condition, the exact master equation including all order approximations is proposed. Correspondingly, the perturbed master equation and its improved form different from the existed master equation are given. In special, the Redfield master equation is derived out without using Born-Markov approximation. The solution of open system dynamics in the Milburn model is also gained. As examples, Zurek model of two-state open system and its extension with two transverse fields are studied.

States and Operators

Bryan J. Dalton, John Jeffers, Stephen Mark Barnett

Abstract This chapter sets out the second-quantisation treatment for systems of identical bosons or fermions. Key features such as the symmetrisation principle and super-selection rules are presented. Orthogonality and completeness requirements for mode functions are set out, and Fock states are defined in terms of mode occupancy, leading to the definitions of mode annihilation and creation operators and the determination of their commutation (bosons) or anticommutation (fermions) rules. Important two-mode states such as binomial states and relative-phase eigenstates are considered. Field creation and annihilation operators are defined and related to multi-particle position eigenstates. The Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of both mode operators and field operators, state dynamics being treated via Liouville–von Neumann, master or Matsubara equations for the density operator. Normal ordering is introduced and applied to expressions for the vacuum state projector. Multi-particle position probabilities are considered and related to normally ordered quantum correlation functions.
