Abstract

Silicon photonics is rapidly emerging as a promising, scalable platform for quantum information applications. As the technology matures, sources of high-quality quantum-optical states are increasingly important. We discuss the use of intermodal four-wave mixing in silicon waveguides for creating entangled photon pairs. We describe a framework to numerically analyze the state of produced photon pairs and discuss a scheme for generating photon pairs that are purely entangled in their transverse waveguide mode. Using this scheme, we find a theoretical fidelity of 99.6 % to a true Bell state in the transverse mode with no spectral correlations.

Silicon waveguides for creating quantum-correlated photon pairs

Qinglong Lin, Govind Prasad Agrawal

We propose to use four-wave mixing inside silicon waveguides for generating quantum-correlated photon pairs in a single spatial mode. Such silicon-based photon sources not only exhibit high pair correlation but also have high spectral brightness. As the proposed scheme is based on mature silicon technology, it has the potential of becoming a cost-effective platform for on-chip quantum information processing applications.

On-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source

Lan-Tian Feng, Ming Zhang, Xiao Xiong +7 more

Abstract Integrated entangled photon pair source is an essential resource for both fundamental investigations and practical applications of quantum information science. Currently there have been several types of entanglement, among which the transverse-mode entanglement is becoming attractive because of its unique advantages. Here, we report an on-chip transverse-mode entangled photon pair source via the spontaneous four-wave mixing processes in a multimode silicon waveguide. Transverse-mode photon pairs are verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of ~2 THz, and a maximally entangled Bell state is also produced with a net fidelity of 0.96 ± 0.01. Our entangled photon pair source is the key element for quantum photonics based on transverse-mode, and also has the possibility to extend to higher-dimensional Hilbert space. Furthermore, the transverse-mode entanglement can be converted coherently to path and polarization entanglement, which paves the way to realizing highly complex quantum photonic circuits with multiple degrees of freedom.

We present a proposal for photon-pair generation through intermodal four-wave mixing with high-dimensional entanglement in transverse mode. Based on this, we suggest a simple fiber design capable of generating four-dimensional Bell states.

Are on-chip heralded single photon sources possible by intermodal four wave mixing in silicon waveguides?

Stefano Signorini, Sara Piccione, Mher Ghulinyan +2 more

On-chip heralded single photon sources are of key importance in the development of chip-scale devices exploiting the quantum properties of light. Single photon states can be produced as single photons heralded from correlated photon pairs generated through spontaneous four wave mixing. On-chip heralded single photon sources based on spontaneous four wave mixing have been already demonstrated. However, the heralded and herald photons are usually generated with wavelengths very close to the pump one, limiting the pump rejection efficiency and the application to the mid infrared. Moreover, the common sources of heralded photons based on spontaneous four wave mixing require spectral post filtering to achieve high purity, limiting the brightness and the integration of these sources. A solution to these problems can be provided by intermodal four wave mixing. In this work, we demonstrate the generation of photon pairs through intermodal four wave mixing in silicon waveguides, measuring the coincidences between the idler at 1.281 μm and the signal at 1.952 μm. We then discuss the application of intermodal four wave mixing to on-chip heralded single photon sources.

Entanglement generation using cryogenic integrated four-wave mixing

Lan‐Tian Feng, Yujie Cheng, Xiao‐Zhuo Qi +5 more

Cryogenic integrated nonlinear photonics can provide fundamental building blocks for scalable photonic quantum computing and optical interfacing among different platforms. Here, we investigate the spontaneous four-wave mixing effect in an integrated silicon waveguide with cryogenic operating conditions (4 K) and employ the system to generate the entangled photon-pair source, one of the key elements of photonic quantum information applications. We experimentally prove that even at cryogenic temperatures, the four-wave mixing effect in silicon waveguides is still an effective method to generate quantum photonic sources. The cryogenic photon-pair source is verified over multiple frequency channels within a bandwidth of ∼2THz. Furthermore, the source is used to generate high-quality frequency-multiplexed energy–time entangled states. Our results will advance the development of cryogenic nonlinear photonics and scalable integrated photonics for quantum information processing.
