Generalized orbital angular momentum symmetry in parametric amplification

Rafael B. Rodrigues, G. B. Alves, Rafael F. Barros +2 more

We investigate interesting symmetry properties verified by the down-converted beams produced in optical parametric amplification with structured light. We show that the Poincar\'e sphere symmetry, previously demonstrated for first-order spatial modes, translates to a multiple Poincar\'e sphere structure for higher orders. Each one of these multiple spheres is associated with a two-dimensional subspace defined by a different value of the orbital angular momentum. Therefore, the symmetry verified by first-order modes is reproduced independently in each subspace. This effect can be useful for parallel control of independently correlated beams.

Parametric down-conversion for light beams possessing orbital angular momentum

Jochen Arlt, Kishan Dholakia, L. Allen +1 more

We investigate the spontaneous parametric down-conversion for light beams possessing orbital angular momentum. The experimental results indicate that the orbital angular momentum is not conserved within the classical light fields. This is in contrast to second harmonic generation where the conservation of orbital angular momentum leads to a well-defined mode transformation. We attribute this difference in behavior to the loss of spatial coherence within each of the down-converted fields.

Wigner representation and geometric transformations of optical orbital angular momentum spatial modes

Gabriel F. Calvo

An exact Wigner representation of optical spatial modes carrying orbital angular momentum is found in closed form by exploiting the underlying SU(2) Lie-group algebra of their associated Poincaré sphere. Orthogonality relations and observables of these states are obtained within the phase space picture. Development of geometric phases on mode transformations is also elucidated.

Orbital angular momentum modes of high-gain parametric down-conversion

Lina Beltran, Gaetano Frascella, Angela M. Pérez +7 more

Abstract Light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) are convenient carriers of quantum information. They can also be used for imparting rotational motion to particles and providing high resolution in imaging. Due to the conservation of OAM in parametric down-conversion (PDC), signal and idler photons generated at low gain have perfectly anti-correlated OAM values. It is interesting to study the OAM properties of high-gain PDC, where the same OAM modes can be populated with large, but correlated, numbers of photons. Here we investigate the OAM spectrum of high-gain PDC and show that the OAM mode content can be controlled by varying the pump power and the configuration of the source. In our experiment, we use a source consisting of two nonlinear crystals separated by an air gap. We discuss the OAM properties of PDC radiation emitted by this source and suggest possible modifications.

Engineering of orbital angular momentum spectrum of down-converted photons with mode-invariant pump

Anindya Banerji, Ali Anwar, Hrushikesh Sable +2 more

In this article we investigate the orbital angular momentum spectrum of photons produced in parametric down conversion process. We study how the transverse profile of the pump mode affects the spectrum as compared to a gaussian pump beam. We show that using perfect optical vortex mode as pump the spectrum can be highly narrowed down. We further study the entanglement between the two down converted photons in the orbital angular momentum basis. We observe that photons entangled in Laguerre-Gaussian modes exhibit greater higher dimensional entanglement.

Poincaré-sphere symmetries in four-wave mixing with orbital angular momentum

M. R. L. da Motta, G. B. Alves, Antonio Zelaquett Khoury +1 more

We explore a degenerate four-wave mixing process induced by transversely structured light beams in a rubidium vapor cell. In particular, we consider the nonlinear interaction driven by optical modes contained in the orbital angular momentum Poincar\'e sphere, which can be parametrized in terms of a polar and an azimuthal angle. In this context we investigate the transfer of spatial structure to two distinct four-wave mixing (FWM) signals, possessing different propagation directions in space. We show that under usual assumptions, the output fields can also be described by modes belonging to Poincar\'e spheres, and that the angles describing the input and output modes are related according to well-defined rules. Our experimental results show good agreement with the calculations, which predict intricate field structures and a transition of the FWM transverse profile between the near- and far-field regions.
