Abstract

We experimentally study the manipulation of the biphoton wave packets by engineering the loss in the parametric down-conversion. We demonstrate a tailored biphoton wave packet shortened by one order of magnitude as compared to the lossless process.

Shaping single photons and biphotons by inherent losses

Wei-Ming Su, Ravikumar Chinnarasu, Chang-Hau Kuo +1 more

Inherent loss is always to be avoided in generating single photons or biphotons, but interestingly it provides opportunities for manipulating the photon wave packet. In this paper we show how inherent loss in parametric down-conversion can be employed to tailor the wave packets of single photons and biphotons. As an example, we propose a scheme to realize a single photon in a single cycle using inherent loss. Our work has potential applications in quantum communication, quantum computation, and quantum interface.

Lossless single photon shaping via heralding

Using spontaneous optical parametric down-conversion, we analyze and experimentally demonstrate heralded generation of shaped single photons, whose modes are losslessly tailored via amplitude modulation on the pump field that drives the down-conversion process.

Generation of broadband biphotons and their compression in an optical fiber

G. Kh. Kitaeva, Maria V. Chekhova, O. A. Shumilkina

The generation of biphoton wave packets with a broad spectrum owing to quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a crystal with an aperiodic poling has been considered. Biphotons at the exit of such a sample are not Fourier limited; i.e., their correlation time is much larger than the inverse width of the spectrum. It has been shown that if the inverse grating vector varies linearly along the sample length, the generated biphoton wave packets can be compressed in time by transmitting two-photon light through an optical fiber.

Anisotropically and High Entanglement of Biphoton States Generated in Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Maxim A. Efremov, P. A. Volkov +3 more

We show both theoretically and experimentally that biphoton wave packets generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be strongly anisotropic and highly entangled. The conditions under which these effects exist are found and discussed.

Anisotropically high entanglement of biphotons

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, S. P. Kulik, Ekaterina V. Moreva +3 more

Biphoton states arising in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are entangled with respect to continuous variables, momentum or coordinates. We discuss some novel and unexpected features of biphoton wave packets.

Temporal shaping of a heralded single-photon wave packet

We report the temporal shaping and nonlocal control of a heralded single-photon wave packet, conditionally prepared by detecting the idler trigger photon of the signal-idler photon pair born in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion.
