Abstract

Abstract In this letter we analysed the efficient exchange of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a double V-type semiconductor quantum well via electron spin coherence. We found that due to the four-wave mixing (FWM) mechanism the OAM state of the vortex light can transfer from applied lights to a new generated signal beam when the efficiency of the FWM processes is enough high. We also shown that the absorption spectrum of the new generated light depends on the OAM number and azimuthal angle of the optical vortex light. We realized that for some specific parametric conditions the absorption spectrum of the generated light becomes negative which corresponds to the lasing without inversion.

A five-level cold atomic system for the orbital angular momentum exchange based on a four-wave mixing setup

Abstract In this paper, we suggest a theoretical model for the exchange of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) state of laser fields in a real cold atomic system for realization in an experimental setup. By using four-wave mixing (FWM) processes, we study the spatial dependence of the new weak generated signal light under electromagnetically induced transparency conditions when one of the laser lights becomes an optical vortex. We discuss the spatial dependence of FWM processes via experimental parameters for different conditions of the OAM of vortex light. We have found that the intensity and phase distributions of the new generated light depends strongly on the OAM number of the optical vortex light. Moreover, we investigate the absorption spectrum of the new generated signal light for different OAM of the optical vortex light. Our obtained results may have potential applications in quantum information science.

Highly efficient vortex four-wave mixing in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells

Jing Qiu, Zhiping Wang, Dong-Sheng Ding +2 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is an important property of vortex light, which provides a valuable tool to manipulate the light-matter interaction in the study of classical and quantum optics. Here we propose a scheme to generate vortex light fields via four-wave mixing (FWM) in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells. By tailoring the probe-field and control-field detunings, we can effectively manipulate the helical phase and intensity of the FWM field. Particularly, when probe field and control field have identical detuning, we find that both the absorption and phase twist of the generated FWM field are significantly suppressed. Consequently, the highly efficient vortex FWM is realized, where the maximum conversion efficiency reaches around 50%. Our study provides a tool to transfer vortex wavefronts from input to output fields in an efficient way, which may find potential applications in solid-state quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Transfer of Orbital Angular Momentum in Vortex Light through Four-Wave Mixing and the Manipulation of Slow and Fast Light

Fan Meng, Xin-Yao Huang, Guo-Feng Zhang

Vortex light, a unique optical field that carries orbital angular momentum (OAM), has attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical analysis of OAM transfer from the input field to the generated signal field in a four-level double-Lambda system via the four-wave mixing (FWM) process, showing that their OAMs follow a specific algebraic relationship. We identify the optimal conditions for efficient vortex light transmission, analyze the influence of detuning on transmission efficiency and phase distortion, and specifically examine the scenario where the control field carries OAM the latter being essential for a complete characterization of OAM conservation in the FWM process, while all three aspects have been largely overlooked in the existing literature. Furthermore, we investigated the tunability of the group velocity between the probe and signal fields by modulating the Rabi frequencies of the two control fields and the relative phase between the probe and signal fields during the FWM process. We demonstrate that the conversion between matched vortex slow and fast light can be realized an effect that has not been widely explored in dual-Lambda-type systems. These results may hold promise for applications in quantum information storage and processing, quantum computing, and ultrasensitive detection.

Tunneling induced swapping of orbital angular momentum in a quantum dot molecule

S I S Al-Hawary, Wesam Radhi Kadhum, Ebraheem Abdu Musad Saleh +7 more

Abstract In this paper, we have examined the effectiveness exchange of optical vorticity via three-wave mixing (TWM) technique in a four-level quantum dot (QD) molecule by means of the electron tunneling effect. Our analytical analysis demonstrates that the TWM procedure can result in the production of a new weak signal beam that may be absorbed or amplified within the QD molecule. We have taken into account the electron tunneling as well as the relative phase of the applied lights to assess the absorption and dispersion characteristics of the newly generated light. We have discovered that the slow light propagation and signal amplification can be achieved. Our results show that the exchange of the orbital angular momentum of light can transfer from coupling optical vortex light to the new generated light in high efficiency.

Coherent transfer of optical vortices via backward four-wave mixing in a double- Λ atomic system

Chun Meng, Tao Shui, Wen‐Xing Yang

We propose and analyze an efficient scheme for the coherent transfer of optical vortices in a cold atomic ensemble with four-level double-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ configuration. The orbital angular-momentum (OAM) information can be transferred from the incident vortex fields to the generated backward signal field via resonant backward four-wave mixing (FWM). Considering the single vortex probe field initially acting on one transition of the atomic ensemble and using experimentally achievable parameters, we identify the conditions under which the resonant backward FWM allows us to greatly improve the conversion efficiency of optical vortices beyond what is achievable in the resonant forward OAM transfers. It is found that the complete energy conversion of optical vortices originates from the perfect competition between linear absorption and parametric gain. We also demonstrate that the phase mismatching would be detrimental to the high-efficiency transfer of optical vortices. Furthermore, we show that the generated backward signal field develops a new pure or mixing OAM state when the control field is also a vortex beam. Finally, we investigate the composite vortex beam generated by collinear superposition of the incident vortex probe and signal fields, which can controlled via adjusting the intensity of the control field. Our scheme may have potential applications in OAM-based optical communication and optical information processing.

Identifying orbital angular momentum of light in quantum wells

Seyedeh Hamideh Kazemi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

Abstract Recently, the generation and detection of structured light have been the subject of intense studies, aiming to realize high-capacity optical storage and continuous-variable quantum technologies. In this Letter, we present a scheme to extract the orbital angular momentum content of vortex beams, possessing integer and fractional azimuthal index, in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells with a double- type configuration. Arising from a quantum interference term, the absorption of a non-vortex probe field depends upon the azimuthal phase of vortex fields so that both the magnitude and sign of azimuthal index/indices can be mapped into the absorption profile.
