Widefield three-dimensional microscopy with a quantum entanglement light source

Tiziana Bond

Devices, systems and methods for widefield three-dimensional (3D) microscopy with a quantum entanglement light source are described. An example method includes generating a first set of photons and a second set of photons, wherein each of the photons in the first set is quantum entangled with a corresponding photon in the second set, directing the second set of photons toward a sample and simultaneously directing the first set of photons toward a first two-dimensional (2D) detector, detecting, from the sample, a plurality of photons at a second 2D detector, analyzing detections from the first and second 2D detectors to determine coincidence information, and determining one or more characteristics associated with at least a three-dimensional (3D) section of the sample based on collective detections at the first and the second 2D detectors.

Laser beam characterization for experiments in quantum optics

Krishna Yadav, Syed Akbar Ali, Sugandh Sirohi +4 more

Ultrafast laser-based micromanufacturing is essential for fabricating high-precision quantum devices such as quantum gates, photonic circuits, and waveguides. Besides the area of micromachining, recent applications of laser beams also include quantum imaging and sensing. The laser beams have been characterized for their wavelength and pulse durations. The techniques include homemade setups of intensity autocorrelation, frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG), and spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) besides the commercial spectrographs. Beams obtained from non-collinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) capable of delivering tunable ultrafast pulses are also described. The dark core beams through Hermite Gaussian (HG) modes and thermal effects are also generated. All these beams are capable of generating polarization-entangled photons by the nonlinear-optical phenomenon of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). After describing the construction of the entangled photon source (EPS), an interferometric setup for imaging based on extracting the phase and intensity of an object is discussed. The application areas of the EPS for quantum imaging, multi-photon applications and adaptive imaging are also highlighted. We propose that quantum imaging can overcome the existing challenges of real-time feedback during micromanufacturing and help prevent the wastage of resources.

Optical parametric loop mirror with adjustable reflectivity by using tunable optical attenuators

Nannan Liu, Zhipeng Kong, Zhenming Dou +1 more

We propose an optical parametric loop mirror whose reflectivity is adjustable by setting two tunable optical attenuators in Sagnac loop. The scheme of the optical parametric loop mirror is consisted of a nonlinear four wave mixing medium, a dispersive element, two optical attenuators, and a beam splitter. The generated four wave mixing wave can be totally separated from signal and pumps no matter how the beam splitter ratio is. When the beam splitter ratio is more than 0.5, we can separate the four wave mixing wave from pumps and signal completely by adjust the efficiency of the first attenuator, and when the beam splitter ratio is less than 0.5, we can also separate the four wave mixing wave from pumps and signal completely by adjust the efficiency of the second attenuator. Our research can help to generate and separate frequency degenerate twin beams in experiment.

Nonlinear interferometer systems and methods

Joseph M. Lukens

Nonlinear interferometers include a nonlinear optical medium that is situated to produce a conjugate optical beam in response to a pump beam and a probe beam. The pump, probe, and conjugate beams propagate displaced from each other along a common optical path. One of the beams is selectively phase shifted, and the beams are then returned to the nonlinear medium, with the selectively phase shift beam phase shifted again. The nonlinear medium provides phase sensitive gain to at least one of the probe or conjugate beams, and the amplified beam is detected to provide an estimate of the phase shift.
