Integer and Fractional Floquet Resonances in a Driven Three-Well System

Abstract

We investigate Floquet dynamics of a particle held in a three-well system driven by a two-frequency field and identify integer and fractional photon resonances due to the dual-frequency driving. It is found that pairs of photon-assisted tunneling near the resonance originate from avoided level crossings in the Floquet spectra which, in essence, are quantum features of the hybridization between different quantum states. In particular, we establish a close connection between fractional-order resonances and Floquet mode properties under two-frequency driving conditions and illustrate their dependence on driving parameters. These results provide us a possibility to realize coherent control of quantum states with the assistance of classical external driving fields.

Coherent control of atomic tunneling in a driven triple well

Gengbiao Lu, Wenhua Hai, Qiongtao Xie

Coherent control of quantum tunneling is investigated for a single atom held in a driven triple-well potential without tight-binding approximation. In the high-frequency regime within or without multiphoton resonance, we find the analytical solutions and their numerical correspondences, including the special Floquet states of invariant populations and the non-Floquet states of slowly varying populations. The Floquet quasienergy spectrum exhibits anticrossings and crossings for different values of the driving parameters, which are associated with different tunneling properties described by the non-Floquet states. Applying the presented results, we suggest a scheme for transporting a single atom between nonadjacent wells or between adjacent wells.

Quantum manipulation of tunnelling for two bosons held in a driven triple-well

Mingliang Zou, Gengbiao Lu, Wenhua Hai +1 more

Coherent control of quantum tunnelling is investigated analytically for two bosons held in a driven triple-well potential. In the high-frequency region within resonance, the non-Floquet states with slowly varying populations are constructed by the linear superposition of Floquet solutions. For the non-resonance case with appropriate reduced parameters, we obtain another set of analytical solutions and their numerical correspondences, which exhibits the selective tunnelling effect of atoms. Applying the presented analytical results, a scheme to transport two bosons from the first well to the third is suggested by adjusting the driving parameters.

Entanglement resonances of driven multi-partite quantum systems

Simeon Sauer, Florian Mintert, Clemens Gneiting +1 more

We show how to create maximally entangled dressed states of a weakly interacting multi-partite quantum system by suitably tuning an external, periodic driving field. Floquet theory allows us to relate, in a transparent manner, the occurrence of entanglement resonances to avoided crossings in the spectrum of quasi-energies, tantamount of well-defined conditions for the controlled, resonant interaction of particles. We demonstrate the universality of the phenomenon for periodically driven, weakly interacting two-level systems, by considering different interaction mechanisms and driving profiles. In particular, we show that entanglement resonances are a generic feature of driven, multi-partite systems, widely independent of the details of the interaction mechanism. Our results are therefore particularly relevant for experiments on interacting two-level systems, in which the microscopic realization of the inter-particle coupling is unknown.

Coherent control of quantum tunneling in different driving-frequency regions

Gengbiao Lu, Wenhua Hai, Honghua Zhong +1 more

We investigate the coherent control of quantum tunneling for a single particle held in a driven double-well potential. For a moderate-frequency region, we demonstrate that the irregular quantum tunneling is associated with classically chaotic dynamics. A set of lower resonance-like frequencies is found, for which the coherent destruction of tunneling in the sense of the time average is illustrated numerically. For a high-frequency region, it is shown that the particle is located at the bottom of each well alternately for a long time and the time located in one well can be modulated by adjusting the driving field. The results could be useful for the experiments of controlling single-particle tunneling [see, e.g., E. Kierig, U. Schnorrberger, A. Schietinger, J. Tomkovic, and M. K. Oberthaler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 190405 (2008).].

Multiphoton-resonance-induced fluorescence of a strongly driven two-level system under frequency modulation

Yiying Yan, Zhiguo Lü, JunYan Luo +1 more

We study the fluorescence spectrum of a strongly driven two-level system (TLS) with modulated transition frequency, which is a bichromatically driven TLS and has multiple resonance frequencies. We are aiming to provide a reliable description of the fluorescence in a regime that is difficult to tackle with perturbation theory and the rotating-wave approximation (RWA), and illustrate the spectral features of the fluorescence under off- and multiphoton-resonance conditions. To go beyond the RWA, we use a semianalytical counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave method that combines a unitary transformation and Floquet theory to calculate the two-mode Floquet states and quasienergies for the bichromatically driven TLS. We then solve the master equation accounting for the spontaneous decay in the bases of the two-mode Floquet states, and derive a physically transparent fluorescence spectrum. In comparison with the numerically exact spectrum from the generalized Floquet-Liouville approach, the present spectrum is found to be applicable in a wide range of the parameters where the RWA and the secular approximation may break down. We find that the counter-rotating (CR) terms of the transverse field omitted in the RWA have non-negligible contributions to the spectrum under certain conditions. Particularly, at the multiphoton resonance the width of which is comparable with the Bloch-Siegert shift, the RWA and non-RWA spectra markedly differ from each other because of the CR-induced shift. We also analyze the symmetry of the spectrum in terms of the transition matrix elements between the two-mode Floquet states. We show that the strict symmetry of the spectrum cannot be expected without the RWA but the almost symmetric spectrum can be obtained at the single-photon resonance that takes the Bloch-Siegert shift into account if the driving is moderately strong and at the multiphoton resonance with a sufficiently weak transverse field.

Two-level systems driven by large-amplitude fields

Sahel Ashhab, J. R. Johansson, Alexandre M. Zagoskin +1 more

We analyze the dynamics of a two-level system subject to driving by large-amplitude external fields, focusing on the resonance properties in the case of driving around the region of avoided level crossing. In particular, we consider three main questions that characterize resonance dynamics: (1) the resonance condition, (2) the frequency of the resulting oscillations on resonance, and (3) the width of the resonance. We identify the regions of validity of different approximations. In a large region of the parameter space, we use a geometric picture in order to obtain both a simple understanding of the dynamics and quantitative results. The geometric approach is obtained by dividing the evolution into discrete time steps, with each time step described by either a phase shift on the basis states or a coherent mixing process corresponding to a Landau-Zener crossing. We compare the results of the geometric picture with those of a rotating wave approximation. We also comment briefly on the prospects of employing strong driving as a useful tool to manipulate two-level systems.
