Biharmonic (ω, 2ω) ionization of atoms by elliptically-polarized light. Carving the photoelectron angular distributions

Abstract

Abstract The biharmonic (ω, 2ω) photoionization of atomic inner-shell electrons opens up new perspectives for studying nonlinear light–atom interactions at intensities in the transition regime from weak to strong-field physics. In particular, the control of the frequency and polarization of biharmonic beams enables one to carve the photoelectron angular distribution and to enhance the resolution of ionization measurements by the (simultaneous) absorption of photons. Apart from its quite obvious polarization dependence, the photoelectron angular distributions are sensitive also to the (relative) intensity, the phase difference and the temporal structure of the incoming beam components, both at resonant and nonresonant frequencies. Here, we describe and analyze several characteristic features of biharmonic ionization in the framework of second-order perturbation theory and (so-called) ionization pathways, as they are readily derived from the interaction of inner-shell electrons with the electric-dipole field of the incident beam. We show how the photoelectron angular distribution and elliptical dichroism can be shaped in rather an unprecedented way by just tuning the properties of the biharmonic field. Since such fields are nowadays accessible from high-harmonic sources or free-electron lasers, these and further investigations might help extract photoionization amplitudes or the phase difference of incoming beams.

Maximum Elliptical Dichroism in Atomic Two-Photon Ionization

J. Hofbrucker, A. V. Volotka, S. Fritzsche

Elliptical dichroism is known in atomic photoionization as the difference in the photoelectron angular distributions produced in nonlinear ionization of atoms by left- and right-handed elliptically polarized light. We theoretically demonstrate that the maximum dichroism |Δ_{ED}|=1 always appears in two-photon ionization of any atom if the photon energy is tuned in so that the electron emission is dominantly determined by two intermediate resonances. We propose the two-photon ionization of atomic helium in order to demonstrate this remarkable phenomenon. The maximum elliptical dichroism could be used as a sensitive tool for analyzing the polarization state of photon beams produced by free-electron lasers.

Elliptical dichroism in biharmonic ionization of atoms

J. Hofbrucker, Birger Böning, A. V. Volotka +1 more

In multiphoton ionization of atoms, elliptical dichroism may arise in the photoelectron angular distributions due to the interference of the possible ionization pathways. We here consider the interaction of atoms with an elliptically polarized biharmonic ($\ensuremath{\omega} + 2\ensuremath{\omega}$) field which simultaneously allows one- and two-photon ionization of the atoms. The interference between these two ionization pathways introduces contributions to the elliptical dichroism in addition to the dichroism that arises from the two-photon ionization alone. We show that these additional dichroism contributions can lead to a stronger dichroism in comparison to the one arising from two-photon ionization only. We present a relativistic analysis of the corresponding photoelectron angular distributions and discuss individual contributions to the dichroic phenomena. Detailed computations have been performed for biharmonic ionization of neutral helium atoms.

Polarization effects in the total rate of biharmonic ω+3ω ionization of atoms

J. Hofbrucker, S. Ramakrishna, A. V. Volotka +1 more

The total ionization rate of biharmonic ($\ensuremath{\omega}+3\ensuremath{\omega}$) ionization is studied within the independent particle approximation and the third-order perturbation theory. Particular attention is paid to how the polarization of the biharmonic light field affects the total rate. The ratios of the biharmonic ionization rates for linearly and circularly polarized beams as well as for corotating and counter-rotating elliptically polarized beams are analyzed, and how they depend on the beam parameters, such as photon frequency or phase between $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and $3\ensuremath{\omega}$ light beams. We show that the interference of the biharmonic ionization amplitudes determines the dominance of a particular beam polarization over another and that it can be controlled by an appropriate choice of beam parameters. Furthermore, we demonstrate our findings for the ionization of neon $L$ shell electrons.

Two-photon ionization of many-electron atoms

J. Hofbrucker

Until recently, the nonlinear interaction between light and matter has been restricted to only low photon energies produced by optical lasers. However, about a decade ago, the rise of free-electron laser facilities revolutionized the field of nonlinear light-matter interaction by delivering intense high-energy light pulses. Today, such lasers are used for research in materials science, chemical technology, biophysical science, solid state physics as well as fundamental research. It is the new experimental possibilities provided by free-electron lasers that motivated the work presented in this thesis. Two-photon ionization process is one of the simplest nonlinear interactions in which absorption of two photons by an atom (or a molecule) leads to promoting one of its bound electrons to continuum. This work presents studies of two-photon ionization of neutral atoms. After a brief historical introduction to the topic of nonlinear light-matter interaction, the density matrix describing the state of an atom and a photoelectron following two-photon ionization is derived. In each successive chapter, part of this density matrix is used to obtain characteristic quantities such as total two-photon ionization cross section, photoelectron angular distributions, ion polarization or degree of polarization of fluorescence photon produced by subsequent decay of the photoion. Physical properties of these quantities are studied and intriguing phenomena, such as elliptical dichroism, polarization transfer as well as relativistic and screening effects are investigated.

Ionization of Atoms by a Bichromatic Fields of ω + 2ω Multiple Frequencies with Arbitrary Polarization

Maria M. Popova, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Maksim D. Kiselev +1 more

Abstract We investigate features of electron emission from atoms in the field of the fundamental and second harmonic of a laser in conditions relevant to those realized in free-electron lasers. General expressions for the angular anisotropy and photoelectron spin polarization are obtained. These expressions are used for describing of the ionization of the valence shell of inert gas atoms and illustrated by calculations for neon. The possibility of control over the electron emission characteristics by varying the relative phase between harmonic (i.e., realization of one of the forms of the coherent control) is considered.

Electron angular distributions in the two-photon ionization of hydrogen-like ions: a relativistic description

Peter Koval, S. Fritzsche, A. Surzhykov

The angular distribution of the emitted electrons, following the two-photon ionization of hydrogen-like ions, is studied within the framework of second order perturbation theory and the Dirac equation. Using a density matrix approach, we have investigated the effects which arise from the polarization of the incoming light as well as from the higher multipoles in the expansion of the electron–photon interaction. For medium- and high- Z ions, in particular, the non-dipole contributions give rise to a significant change in the angular distribution of the emitted electrons, if compared with the electric dipole approximation. This includes a strong forward emission while, in the dipole approximation, the electron emission always occurs symmetrically with respect to the plane which is perpendicular to the photon beam. Detailed computations for the dependence of the photoelectron angular distributions on the polarization of the incident light are carried out for the ionization of H, and Xe 53+ and U 91+ (hydrogen-like) ions.
