Abstract

We propose (2 N +1) mutually unbiased basis measurement for 2 N -dimensional time-bin states, where the number of devices scales logarithmically with the dimension. We observed average error of only 3.8% for four-dimensional phase bases.

Mutually unbiased measurements for high-dimensional time-bin–based photonic states

Thomas Brougham, Stephen Mark Barnett

The task of measuring in two mutually unbiased bases is central to many quantum information protocols, as well as being of fundamental interest. Increasingly, there is an experimental focus on generating and controlling high-dimensional photonic states. One approach is to use the arrival time of a photon, which can be split into discrete time bins. An important problem associated with such states is the difficulty in experimentally realizing a measurement that is mutually unbiased with respect to the time of arrival. We propose a simple and compact scheme to measure in both the time-of-arrival basis and a basis that is approximately mutually unbiased with respect to the arrival time.

Reconfigurable generation and measurement of mutually unbiased bases for time-bin qudits

Joseph M. Lukens, Nurul T. Islam, Charles Ci Wen Lim +1 more

We propose a method for implementing mutually unbiased generation and measurement of time-bin qudits using a cascade of electro-optic phase modulator–coded fiber Bragg grating pairs. Our approach requires only a single spatial mode and can switch rapidly between basis choices. We obtain explicit solutions for dimensions d = 2, 3, and 4 that realize all d + 1 possible mutually unbiased bases and analyze the performance of our approach in quantum key distribution. Given its practicality and compatibility with current technology, our approach provides a promising springboard for scalable processing of high-dimensional time-bin states.

More mutually unbiased bases

Mateo Cárdenes Wuttig, Joseph Tindall

Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) describe quantum measurements for which certainty in one basis gives uniform outcomes in the others. Their maximum number remains unknown in dimensions that are not powers of a prime. We introduce an ansatz that, in many dimensions, allows us to construct more MUBs than have previously been found. Each basis in the ansatz consists of a diagonal phase matrix applied to a fixed unitary, which is a tensor product of Fourier matrices and, optionally, any real Hadamard matrix. This construction yields five MUBs in dimension 12, six in dimensions 48, 96, and 192, seven in dimensions 36 and 108, and ten in dimension 648. These bases can then be extended to exceed the tensor product bound, asymptotically, in every eighteenth dimension. Moreover, we show that Paley's real Hadamard matrix can be used to construct $q+1$ bases in dimension $d = q(q+1)$ for every prime power $q\equiv3\pmod4$. This count grows as $\sqrt d$ and cannot be exceeded by tensor products of smaller sets.

Partially unbiased entangled bases

Amir Kalev, F. C. Khanna, M. Revzen

In this contribution we group the operator basis for ${d}^{2}$-dimensional Hilbert space in a way that enables us to relate bases of entangled states with single-particle mutually unbiased state bases (MUB), each in dimensionality $d$. We utilize these sets of operators to show that an arbitrary density matrix for this ${d}^{2}$-dimensional Hilbert-space system is analyzed via ${d}^{2}+d+1$ measurements, ${d}^{2}\ensuremath{-}d$ of which involve those entangled states that we associate with MUB of the $d$-dimensional single-particle constituents. The number ${d}^{2}+d+1$ lies in the middle of the number of measurements needed for bipartite state reconstruction with two-particle MUB $({d}^{2}+1)$ and those needed by single-particle MUB $[{({d}^{2}+1)}^{2}]$.
