Thermodynamics of a 4‐site Hubbard model by analytical diagonalization

Abstract

Abstract By use of the conservation laws a four‐site Hubbard model coupled to a particle bath within an external magnetic field in z ‐direction was diagonalized. The analytical dependence of both the eigenvalues and the eigenstates on the interaction strength, the chemical potential and magnetic field was calculated. It is demonstrated that the low temperature behaviour is determined by a delicate interplay between many‐particle states differing in electron number and spin if the electron density is away from half‐filling. The grand partition sum is calculated and the specific heat, the susceptibility as well as various correlation functions and spectral functions are given in dependence of the interaction strength, the electron occupation and the applied magnetic field. For both the grand canonical and the canonical ensemble the high‐temperature crossing points of the specific heat are calculated. Whereas in the weak correlation regime the universal value calculated by second order perturbation theory for several Hubbard systems being in the thermodynamic limit is confirmed, these crossing points vanish for intermediate to strong correlation.

Propriedades Termodinâmicas do Modelo de Hubbard Unidimensional no Limite Uniforme

Francisco de Salles Almeida, Cláudio Andrade Macedo

In order to contribute to understand well the thermodynamic properties of strongly correlated electron systems, we study numerically, in the grand canonical ensemble, the temperature dependence of the internal energy, specific heat, entropy, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility of the one-dimensional Hubbard model without transference of moment in the interactions. The results have been obtained for a wide range of values of the on-site Coulombian repulsion U and of the external magnetic field h. Differences between this model and the original Hubbard model have been observed in relation to the number of peaks of the specific heat and to the behavior of the susceptibility in temperatures tending to zero. These differences evidence that the two models possess different magnetic structures of correlation.

The Hubbard model extended by nearest‐neighbor Coulomb and exchange interaction on a cubic cluster – rigorous and exact results

Rolf Schumann, David Zwicker

Abstract The Hubbard model on a cube was revisited and extended by both nearest‐neighbor Coulomb correlation W and nearest‐neighbor Heisenberg exchange J. The complete eigensystem was computed exactly for all electron occupancies and all model parameters ranging from minus infinity to plus infinity. For two electrons on the cluster the eigensystem is given in analytical form. For six electrons and infinite on‐site correlation U we determinded the groundstate and the groundstate energy of the pure Hubbard model analytically. For fixed electron numbers we found a multitude of ground state level crossings depending on the various model parameters. Furthermore the groundstates of the pure Hubbard model in dependence on a magnetic field h coupled to the spins are shown for the complete U‐h plane. The critical magnetic field, where the zero spin groundstate breaks down is given for four and six electrons. Suprisingly we found parameter regions, where the ground state spin does not depend monotonously on J in the extended model. For the cubic cluster gas, i.e. an ensemble of clusters coupled to an electron bath, we calculated the density n (μ, T, h) and the thermodynamical density of states from the grand potential. The ground states and the various spin‐spin correlation functions are studied for both attractive and repulsive values of the three interaction constants. We determined the various anomalous degeneration lines, where n (μ, T = 0, h = 0) shows steps higher than one, since in this parameter regions exotic phenomena as phase separation are to expect in extended models. For the cases where these lines end in triple points, i.e. groundstates of three different occupation numbers are degenerated, we give the related parameter values. Regarding the influence of the nn‐exchange and the nn‐Coulomb correlation onto the anomalous degeneration we find both lifting and inducing of degeneracies depending on the parameter values.

Field and temperature dependence of thermodynamic and correlation functions of Hubbard model

Charles C. Chen, Minghui Huang

The thermodynamic and correlation functions for one- and three- dimensional systems described by the half-filled band Hubbard Hamiltonians are evaluated in the pair-approximation of cluster variation method. The energy, specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility and various equilibrium correlation functions are computed as functions of temperature as well as the external magnetic field for different values of coulomb energies. Our solutions correspond to Bethe approximation in which the relevant pair-correlation functions are included in our formulation. It is observed that the chemical potential for the half-filled band is exactly half of the coulomb energy at all temperatures, irrespective of the value of the applied magnetic field.

Grand canonical ensemble of the extended two-site Hubbard model via a nonextensive distribution

F. A. R. Navarro, E. Torres Tapia, Pedro Pacheco Peña

Abstract We hereby introduce a research about a grand canonical ensemble for the extended two-site Hubbard model, that is, we consider the intersite interaction term in addition to those of the simple Hubbard model. To calculate the thermodynamical parameters, we utilize the nonextensive statistical mechanics; specifically, we perform the simulations of magnetic internal energy, specific heat, susceptibility, and thermal mean value of the particle number operator. We found out that the addition of the intersite interaction term provokes a shifting in all the simulated curves. Furthermore, for some values of the on-site Coulombian potential, we realize that, near absolute zero, the consideration of a chemical potential varying with temperature causes a nonzero entropy. Quantum critical behavior and thermodynamics of the repulsive one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Ovidiu I. Pâţu, Andreas Klümper, Angela Foerster

Even though the Hubbard model is one of the most fundamental models of highly correlated electrons, analytical and numerical data describing its thermodynamics at nonzero magnetization are relatively scarce. We present a detailed investigation of the thermodynamic properties for the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field for all values of the filling fraction and temperatures as low as $T\ensuremath{\sim}0.005t.$ Our analysis is based on the system of integral equations derived in the quantum transfer matrix framework. We determine the critical exponents of the quantum phase transitions and also provide analytical derivations for some of the universal functions characterizing the thermodynamics in the vicinities of the quantum critical points. Extensive numerical data for the specific heat, susceptibility, compressibility, and entropy are reported. The experimentally relevant double occupancy presents an interesting doubly nonmonotonic temperature dependence at intermediate values of the interaction strength and also at large repulsion and magnetic fields close to the critical value. The susceptibility in zero magnetic field has a logarithmic singularity at low temperatures for all filling factors similar to the behavior of the same quantity in the spin-1/2 isotropic Heisenberg model. We determine the density profiles for a harmonically trapped system and show that while the total density profile seems to depend mainly on the value of chemical potential at the center of the trap the distribution of phases in the inhomogeneous system changes dramatically as we increase the magnetic field.
