Abstract

We present a high-performance source of unconditional polarization-entangled photons that have a high-emission rate, a broadband distribution, are degenerated and postselection free. The property of the source is based on the multiple quantum interference effect with a round-trip configuration of a Sagnac interferometer. The quantum interference effects make it possible to use the high generation efficiency of the polarization-entangled photons to process parametric down-conversion, and separate degenerated photon pairs into different optical modes without a postselection requirement. The principle of the optical system was described and experimentally used to measure the fidelity and Bell parameters, and also to characterize the generated polarization-entangled photons from a minimum of six combinations of polarization correlated data. The experimentally obtained fidelity and Bell parameters exceeded the classical local correlation limit and are clear evidence of the generation of unconditional polarization-entangled photons.

Quantum interferometric generation of polarization entangled photons

Haruka Terashima, Satoshi KOBAYASHI, Takaho Tsubakiyama +1 more

Quantum interference, like Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, has played an important role to test fundamental concepts in quantum physics. We experimentally show that the multiple quantum interference effects enable the generation of high-performance polarization entangled photons. These photons have a high-emission rate, are degenerate, have a broadband distribution, and are postselection free. A quantum interferometric scheme, based on a round-trip configuration of a double-pass polarization Sagnac interferometer, makes it possible to use the large generation efficiency of polarization entangled photons in the process of parametric down-conversion and to separate degenerate photon pairs into different optical modes with no requirement of postselection. We demonstrate experimentally that multiple quantum interference is not only an interesting fundamental quantum optical phenomenon but can be used for novel photonic quantum information technologies.

An Ultrafast Source of Polarization Entangled Photon Pairs based on a Sagnac Interferometer

Devin H. Smith

This thesis describes the design, development, and implementation of a pulsed source of polarization-entangled photons using spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a Sagnac interferometer. A tangle of 0.9286 ± 0.0015, fidelity to the state (|10〉 + |01〉)/√2 of \n0.9798 ± 0.0004 and a brightness of 597 pairs/s/mW were demonstrated. \n \nSpontaneous parametric down-conversion is a nonlinear optical process in which one photon is split into two lower-frequency photons while conserving momentum and energy, in this \nexperiment nearly degenerate photons are produced. These photons are then interfered at the output beamsplitter of the interferometer, exchanging path entanglement for polarization entanglement and generating the desired polarization-entangled photon pairs.

Variable Bell states in a polarization-entangled photon source

Shruti Sundar, M. V. Jabir, Daniel Razansky

Bell states are fundamental resources in quantum optics, underpinning a range of applications in quantum computation and communication. However, many experimental sources focus on generating a single Bell state, limiting their utility for protocols that require the full set of maximally entangled states. In this work, we present a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal integrated into a Sagnac loop interferometer. Our source initially generates one Bell state, which is then transformed into the complete set of Bell states through the application of phase and bit flips using phase plates. We characterize the entanglement quality of all generated states via two-photon interference measurements, quantum state tomography, and evaluation of the Bell parameter. Our results show spectral brightness of 0.15 kHz/mW/nm with interference visibilities of ∼98% (H/V basis) and ∼96% (A/D basis) and state fidelity of ∼0.97 across all Bell states, with all states demonstrating a clear violation of the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality (S≥2.6). This approach offers a practical solution for obtaining all four Bell states with high efficiency from a single source, which could facilitate more versatile implementations in quantum information processing.

Broadband Telecom Entanglement from an All-Fiber Type-0 Sagnac Source

Alessandro Cestelli, Spyridon Grountas, Scott Mc Haffie +3 more

We demonstrate a compact, practical all-fiber source of non-degenerate telecom-band polarization-entangled photon pairs assembled from off-the-shelf components. The compact fiber-integrated architecture is designed to be affordable, straightforward to assemble and align, and compatible with existing optical-fiber infrastructure. Photon pairs are generated through type-0 spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a pigtailed periodically poled lithium-niobate waveguide embedded in a Sagnac interferometer. At 0.5 mW pump power, quantum-state tomography yields a Bell-state fidelity $F_{Φ^-}=0.850$, purity $P=0.836$, and concurrence $C=0.782$. A separate CHSH measurement gives $S=2.3301\pm0.0075$. The measured Bell-state fidelity is sufficient for the reconstructed polarization state to support qubit teleportation above the classical fidelity limit under ideal protocol operations. Analysis of the density matrix shows that approximately 96.7% of the population remains in the desired $|HH\rangle$-$|VV\rangle$ subspace, with a normalized coherence of approximately 0.86. A residual relative-phase offset indicates that local phase compensation could increase the Bell-state fidelity to approximately 0.8865. We further characterize the brightness--quality trade-off and obtain a corrected pair-rate slope of $(0.918\pm0.040)$ Mcps mW$^{-1}$. The broadband emission and fiber interfaces offer a route to multiuser entanglement distribution through off-the-shelf multichannel wavelength-division multiplexers with passbands matched to the signal and idler wavelengths.

esting quantum correlations of three entangled photons generated in cascaded parametric down-conversion

Deny R. Hamel, Lynden K. Shalm, Hannes Hübet +7 more

Non-classical states of light are of fundamental importance for emerging quantum technologies. All optics experiments producing multi-qubit entangled states have until now relied on outcome post-selection, a procedure where only the measurement results corresponding to the desired state are considered. This method severely limits the usefulness of the resulting entangled states. fiere, we show the direct production of polarization- entangled photon triplets by cascading two entangled down-conversion processes[1]. First, a Sagnac source [2] produces non-degenerate entangled photon pairs at 776 nm and 842 nm in a Bell state. The 776 nm photon is sent through a polarizing Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a down-conversion crystal in each arm. If it is down-converted, a photon pair is created in modes 2 and 3 with a polarization state depending on the pump photon. The quantum stete describing the photon triplets is:
