Abstract

We report on the first-time generation of polarization-entangled photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in ultrathin nonlinear layers. Relaxed phase matching leads to an unprecedented tunability of the two-photon polarization state, not achievable in bulk sources.

Flat-optics generation of broadband photon pairs with tunable polarization entanglement

Vitaliy Sultanov, Tomás Santiago‐Cruz, Maria V. Chekhova

The concept of "flat optics" is quickly conquering different fields of photonics, but its implementation in quantum optics is still in its infancy. In particular, polarization entanglement, strongly required in quantum photonics, is so far not realized on "flat" platforms. Meanwhile, relaxed phase matching of "flat" nonlinear optical sources enables enormous freedom in tailoring their polarization properties. Here we use this freedom to generate photon pairs with tunable polarization entanglement via spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) in a 400-nm GaP film. By changing the pump polarization, we tune the polarization state of photon pairs from maximally entangled to almost disentangled, which is impossible in a single bulk SPDC source. Polarization entanglement, together with the broadband frequency spectrum, results in an ultranarrow (12 fs) Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and promises extensions to hyperentanglement.

Tiniest Sources of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion

Maria V. Chekhova

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion in ultrathin films or metasurfaces has loose phasematching, providing enormous freedom for quantum state engineering. This includes tunable polarization entanglement, resonant enhancement of emission, controlled directivity, and generation of complex quantum states.

Biphoton Polarization Bell states from an InGaP nonlinear metasurface

Jinyong Ma, Tongmiao Fan, Tuomas Haggrén +5 more

We develop an ultrathin source of two-photon polarization Bell states based on an InGaP nonlinear metasurface. The metasurface facilitates a local optical resonance with a tailored angular dispersion, enabling the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs through spontaneous parametric down conversion. This opens new possibilities for practical applications of integrated metasurfaces in advanced quantum technologies.

We experimentally demonstrated generation of ultra-bright polarization-entangled photon pairs based on a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in a bulk KTP crystal. This technique uses noncritical phase matching to generate Type II, collinear photon pairs.

Tuneable Spatially Entangled Photon-Pair Emission from a Nonlinear Metasurface

Maximilian A. Weissflog, Jinyong Ma, Jihua Zhang +5 more

Entangled photon-pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) have evolved into an indispensable resource for various quantum communication, imaging, sensing and computing schemes. While photon-pair sources are so far mostly based on bulk-optical nonlinear components, resonant nonlinear metasurfaces with sub-wavelength thickness have recently been demonstrated as a new platform for photon-pair generation [1]–[3]. Contrary to bulk and integrated nonlinear structures where phase matching steers the pair generation efficiency in different directions and wavelengths, nanostructures can control these properties via their optical resonances. However, the tunability of spatial photon emission in multiple directions remained an open challenge.

We present an ultra-thin source of down-converted photon pairs. These semiconductor-based devices are periodically poled to enhance generation efficiencies, yielding high-fidelity, maximally-entangled, tunable polarization states, without any walk-off compensation or interferometric techniques.
