Abstract

Using an unbalanced SU(1,1) interferometer, we study the dependence of interference upon filter bandwidth. We find that under some conditions depending on entanglement, the coherence time does not change when optical filtering is applied.

Temporal coherence in an unbalanced SU(1,1) interferometer

In classical coherence theory, coherence time is typically related to the bandwidth of the optical field. Narrowing the bandwidth by optical filtering will result in the lengthening of the coherence time. In the case of a delayed pulse photon interference, this will lead to pulse overlap and recovery of interference, which is otherwise absent due to time delay. However, this is changed for entangled optical fields. In this Letter, we investigate how the temporal coherence of the fields in a pulse-pumped SU(1,1) interferometer changes with the bandwidth of optical filtering. We find that the effect of optical filtering is not similar to the classical coherence theory in the presence of quantum entanglement. A full quantum theory is presented and can explain the phenomena well.

We demonstrate in SU(1,1) interferometers that temporal coherence of an optical field depends on not only its spectrum but also its entanglement property. This study reveals the relationship among interference visibility, photon distinguishability and entanglement.

Temporal coherence of optical fields in the presence of entanglement

Yunxiao Zhang, Nan Huo, Liang Cui +5 more

In classical coherence theory, coherence time is typically related to the bandwidth of the optical field. Narrowing the bandwidth will result in the lengthening of the coherence time. This will erase temporal distinguishability of photons due to time delay in pulsed photon interference. However, this is changed in an SU(1,1)-type quantum interferometer where quantum entanglement is involved. In this paper, we investigate how the temporal coherence of the fields in a pulse-pumped SU(1,1) interferometer changes with the bandwidth of optical filtering. We find that, because of the quantum entanglement, the coherence of the fields does not improve when optical filtering is applied, in contrary to the classical coherence theory, and quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum interference in addition to distinguishability.

Ultrafast Temporal SU(1,1) Interferometer

Interferometers are highly sensitive to phase differences and are utilized in numerous schemes. Of special interest is the quantum SU(1,1) interferometer which is able to improve the sensitivity of classical interferometers. We theoretically develop and experimentally demonstrate a temporal SU(1,1) interferometer based on two time lenses in a 4f configuration. This temporal SU(1,1) interferometer has a high temporal resolution, imposes interference on both time and spectral domains, and is sensitive to the phase derivative which is important for detecting ultrafast phase changes. Therefore, this interferometer can be utilized for temporal mode encoding, imaging, and studying the ultrafast temporal structure of quantum light.

Temporal SU(1,1) interferometer

Sara Meir, Eliahu Cohen, Moti Fridman

Quantum interferometers are able to improve the sensitivity of classical interferometers beyond the shot-noise limit. This is done by employing squeezed states of light and destructive interference of the noise in the system. We developed a quantum SU(1,1) interferometer in the time domain. Our nonlinear quantum interferometer creates interference of the input signals at different times and frequencies. We can control the time and frequency differences for investigating the full temporal and spectral structure of the signal. This quantum interferometer can be utilized for sensing ultrafast phase changes, quantum imaging, temporal mode encoding, and studying the temporal structure of entangled photons.
