Abstract

Blockchain and quantum technology breakthroughs are currently being debated publicly across a variety of forums. There are numerous applications and capabilities that can provide transparent, redundant, secure, accountable environments thanks to these technologies. To ensure resource-dependent high security requirements, certain cryptographic primitives and protocols can be used effectively. Quantum proofs, safe quantum solutions, and anti-quantum systems will assess any system for quantum attacks and create a secure quantum computing system. Therefore, this work intends to encourage experts from different fields to provide technology-integrated solutions that combine cost-effective and quality service, quickly, securely, and meet requirements. Researchers will be encouraged to provide helpful overviews and guidance in dealing with real-time applications from post-quantum technologies.

Post-quantum Cryptographic Approach for Cyberspace Security

J.J. Jayakanth, Vani Rajasekar, Velliangiri Sarveshwaran

The most recent quantum computers are capable of decoding secret encryption keys and opening up the network to attack by solving extremely difficult classical cryptography calculations. In contrast to the billions of years of calculation required by conventional computer equipment, they can nearly instantly solve complex mathematical calculations. The emergence of quantum computing and blockchains are two of the main technical developments both in academic and industry domains that are currently in progress. Researchers support the creation of innovative methods that incorporate encryption technology in the post-quantum computing. A lattice was utilized extensively in cryptography and those techniques were employed in both (a) cryptanalysis by utilizing lattice assumption to crack cryptosystems and (b) cryptography by exploiting challenging lattice problems in computational domain. The issues similar to the quantum attack and the execution of post-quantum signature verification in blockchains are a required scientific implementation in today’s world because blockchains have considerably advanced in recent years and learned numerous applications in various fields with the assumption that they will significantly improve their security. This chapter offers the theoretical underpinnings for current research in post-quantum cryptography that aims to integrate safe cryptographic primitives into blockchain technology.

Hassan Khodaiemehr, Khadijeh Bagheri, Chen Feng

Quantum computers pose a significant threat to blockchain technology’s security, which heavily relies on public-key cryptography and hash functions. The cryptographic algorithms used in blockchains, based on large odd prime numbers and discrete logarithms, can be easily compromised by quantum computing algorithms like Shor’s algorithm and its future qubit variations. This survey paper comprehensively examines the impact of quantum computers on blockchain security and explores potential mitigation strategies. We begin by surveying the existing literature on blockchains and quantum computing, providing insights into the current state of research. We then present an overview of blockchain, highlighting its key components and functionalities. We delve into the preliminaries and key definitions of quantum computing, establishing a foundation for understanding the implications on blockchain security. The application of blockchains in cybersecurity is explored, considering their strengths and vulnerabilities in light of evolving quantum computing capabilities. The survey focuses on the quantum security of blockchain’s fundamental building blocks, including digital signatures, hash functions, consensus algorithms, and smart contracts. We analyze the vulnerabilities introduced by quantum computers and discuss potential countermeasures and enhancements to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of blockchain systems. Furthermore, we investigate the quantum attack surface of blockchains, identifying potential avenues for exploiting quantum computing to strengthen existing attacks. We emphasize the need for developing quantum-resistant defenses and explore solutions for mitigating the threat of quantum computers to blockchains, including the adoption of quantum and post-quantum blockchain architectures. By examining vulnerabilities and discussing mitigation strategies, we aim to guide researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in developing robust and secure blockchain systems capable of withstanding advancements in quantum computing technology.

Directions for enhancing quantum resilience of blockchain platforms and ecosystems

Sergei Petrenko, Alexey Petrenko, Anatoliy Kazak +2 more

Blockchain ecosystems and platforms form a critical foundation for national digital economies worldwide. However, recent advancements in quantum computing, exemplified by breakthroughs from IBM and other leading developers, reveal that these systems may no longer guarantee stability and security against emerging quantum-enabled attacks. The increasing feasibility of such threats, commonly referred to as the “quantum threat,” poses unprecedented risks to the integrity, confidentiality, and reliability of blockchain infrastructures. In response, several technologically advanced countries have initiated efforts to anticipate and mitigate potential quantum cyberattacks. Ensuring the quantum resilience of blockchain systems necessitates novel approaches beyond conventional information security methods. Unlike traditional protections, these approaches aim to prevent systemic failures even under quantum-enabled adversarial conditions. The study identifies and systematizes the main directions for achieving quantum resilience, including post-quantum cryptographic primitives, modified quantum algorithms, and hybrid quantum–classical security models. The review highlights how progress in superconducting, ionic, photonic, and neutral-atom quantum platforms reshapes the threat landscape. A distinctive contribution of this work lies in its integrative perspective — linking cryptographic, architectural, and ecosystem-level aspects of blockchain sustainability under quantum threats. The proposed framework emphasizes combining post-quantum cryptography, quantum-safe protocols, and cross-domain coordination between quantum computing and cybersecurity research. Given the rapidly advancing nature of quantum technologies, the findings presented here not only reflect the current state of the field but also outline strategic directions for developing adaptive, quantum-resilient blockchain systems, including dynamic algorithmic frameworks, formal verification of quantum-resistant smart contracts, and simulation of blockchain protocols against quantum adversary models.

The Future of Cryptocurrency: Quantum-Secure Blockchain Protocols

Rajat Verma

Quantum computing's development poses a significant threat to the cryptographic security of current blockchain technologies, potentially undermining the integrity of digital transactions. Quantum computers can break the complex mathematical problems that algorithms like RSA and ECC rely on, which could lead to vulnerabilities such as double-spending and fraud. To address these risks, the blockchain community is exploring quantum-resistant protocols that employ post-quantum cryptographic algorithms, which are designed to withstand quantum computing attacks. Quantum-secure blockchain protocols integrate quantum key distribution (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to enhance security. QKD uses quantum mechanics principles to secure communication channels, ensuring that any attempt to intercept the key introduces detectable anomalies. PQC involves algorithms like lattice-based, hash-based, or multivariate polynomial-based algorithms that are believed to be secure against quantum attacks. These protocols aim to maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and security of data transmitted over the blockchain, ensuring the longevity and reliability of blockchain systems in the face of evolving computational advancements. A quantum-secure blockchain scheme (QSB) utilizes a consensus mechanism, QPoA, and IQS. The QPoA is leveraged for block generation while the IQS is deployed in transaction verification1. Furthermore, the integration of quantum computing with blockchain can address current limitations, such as slow transaction speeds and lack of scalability, by optimizing calculations and enabling smarter, more sophisticated smart contracts. The development and implementation of quantum-resistant blockchains are essential for future-proofing digital transactions and maintaining trust in decentralized systems
