Abstract

The problem of an adequate description of the wave processes in Bose-Einstein condensates (CBE), including space-temporal evolution of CBE in the electron CBE condensate in the self-consistent electrical field and CBE atomic condensate in the self-consistent gravitational field is considered. The complete nonlocal system for the CBE evolution is delivered including particular case and analytical solutions.

Interacting laser and Bose-Einstein-condensate atomic beams: Mutual guiding structures

Federica Cattani, Vasily Geyko, Arkady V. Kim +2 more

A basic set of equations describing the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a laser field is derived based on a semiclassical model and applied to the problem of mutual guiding of laser and BEC atomic beams. Within this framework we have studied stationary spatially localized solutions of the nonlinear system which describe possible laser and BEC atomic beam guiding and have shown their stability as well. It is also shown that a self-guiding effect can be realized through both single- and multiple-scaled structures of a BEC atomic and a laser beam.

Co-propagating Bose–Einstein condensates and electromagnetic radiation: formation of mutually localized structures

Federica Cattani, Arkady V. Kim, D Anderson +1 more

A semi-classical model is derived for describing the interaction between coherent electromagnetic radiation and a Bose–Einstein condensate in the limit of zero temperature, including the back action of the atoms on the radiation. This model is used to analyse the problem of the self-consistent evolution of a laser beam and a BEC atomic beam. The mutual propagation is studied numerically and demonstrates not only the possibility of a stationary regime of mutual guiding, but also of generating a collapse-like phenomenon.

Coherence of atomic matter-wave fields

Elena V. Goldstein, O. Zobay, Pierre Meystre

In analogy to Glauber's analysis of optical coherence, we adopt an operational approach to introduce different classes of atomic coherence associated with different types of measurements. For the sake of concreteness we consider specifically fluorescence, nonresonant imaging, and ionization. We introduce definitions of coherence appropriate to them, which we call electronic, density, and field coherence, respectively. We illustrate these concepts in various descriptions of Bose-Einstein condensation, showing that each of these descriptions makes different implicit assumptions on the coherence of the system. We also study the impact of elastic collision on the field and density coherence properties of atom lasers.

Evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate of neutral atoms --- A field theoretical approach

Koichi Nakamura, Y. Yamanaka

The particle distribution in a Bose condensate under the trapping potential and its time evolution after switching off the trapping potential suddenly are calculated. We investigate the problem from the viewpoint of quantum field theory, using a model of self-interacting neutral boson field. Within the approximation of retainng the most dominant term in the Hamiltonian after applying the Bogoliubov replacement, we can calculate analytically the particle distribution as a function of space and time coordinates.

Theory of superradiant scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate

Evgeni D. Trifonov

A model of superradiant scattering of light from a Bose- Einstein condensate based on a semi-classical approach is proposed. Choosing coherent states with definite momentum as a basis of atomic states we derive a Maxwell-Bloch equations for the system considered and obtain their solutions that describe the temporal evolution of intensity of scattering light and population of the coherent atomic states.
