Phase-Fluctuating 3D condensates in elongated traps

Abstract

We find that in very elongated 3D trapped Bose gases, even at temperatures far below the BEC transition temperature Tc, the equilibrium state will be a 3D condensate with fluctuating phase (quasicondensate). At sufficiently low temperatures the phase fluctuations are suppressed and the quasicondensate turns into a true condensate. The presence of the phase fluctuations allows for extending thermometry of Bose-condensed gases well below those established in current experiments.

Condensation and quasicondensation in an elongated three-dimensional Bose gas

Michael C. Garrett, Tod M. Wright, Matthew J. Davis

We study the equilibrium correlations of a Bose gas in an elongated three-dimensional harmonic trap using a grand-canonical classical-field method. We focus in particular on the progressive transformation of the gas from the normal phase, through a phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime to the so-called true-condensate regime, with decreasing temperature. Choosing realistic experimental parameters, we quantify the density fluctuations and phase coherence of the atomic field as functions of the system temperature. We identify the onset of Bose condensation through analysis of both the generalized Binder cumulant appropriate to the inhomogeneous system, and the suppression of the effective many-body $T$ matrix that characterizes interactions between condensate atoms in the finite-temperature field. We find that the system undergoes a second-order transition to condensation near the critical temperature for an ideal Bose gas in the strongly anisotropic three-dimensional geometry but remains in a strongly phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime until significantly lower temperatures. We characterize the crossover from a quasicondensate to a true condensate by a qualitative change in the form of the nonlocal first-order coherence function of the field and compare our results to those of previous works employing a density-phase Bogoliubov--de Gennes analysis.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in Quasi-2D Trapped Gases

Dmitry S. Petrov, Markus Holzmann, Gora V. Shlyapnikov

We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in quasi-2D trapped gases and find that well below the transition temperature T(c) the equilibrium state is a true condensate, whereas at intermediate temperatures T<T(c) one has a quasicondensate (condensate with fluctuating phase). The mean-field interaction in a quasi-2D gas is sensitive to the frequency omega(0) of the (tight) confinement in the "frozen" direction, and one can switch the sign of the interaction by changing omega(0). Variation of omega(0) can also reduce the rates of inelastic processes. This offers promising prospects for tunable BEC in trapped quasi-2D gases.

Spontaneous Solitons in the Thermal Equilibrium of a Quasi-1D Bose Gas

Tomasz Karpiuk, Piotr Deuar, Przemysław Bienias +5 more

We show that solitons occur generically in the thermal equilibrium state of a weakly interacting elongated Bose gas, without the need for external forcing or perturbations. This reveals a major new quality to the experimentally widespread quasicondensate state, usually thought of as primarily phase-fluctuating. Thermal solitons are seen in uniform 1D, trapped 1D, and elongated 3D gases, appearing as shallow solitons at low quasicondensate temperatures, becoming widespread and deep as temperature rises. This behavior can be understood via thermal occupation of the type II excitations in the Lieb-Liniger model of a uniform 1D gas. Furthermore, we find that the quasicondensate phase includes very appreciable density fluctuations while leaving phase fluctuations largely unaltered from the standard picture derived from a density-fluctuation-free treatment.

Density fluctuations in a very elongated Bose gas : transition towards quasi-bec and 1D-3D crossover

Isabelle Bouchoule, Julien Armijo, T. Jacqmin +1 more

By measuring the density fluctuations in a highly elongated weakly interacting Bose gas, we observe and quantify the transition from the ideal gas to a quasi-condensate regime throughout the dimensional crossover from a purely 1D to an almost 3D gas. We show that that the entire transition region and the dimensional crossover are described surprisingly well by the modified Yang-Yang model. Furthermore, we find that at low temperatures the linear density at the quasi-condensate transition scales according to an interaction-driven scenario of a longitudinally uniform 1D Bose gas, whereas at high temperatures it scales according to the degeneracy-driven critical scenario of transverse condensation of a 3D ideal gas. We also perform measurements of the third moment of atom number fluctuations. We find a positive skewness of the atom number distribution in the ideal gas regime and a reduced skewness compatible with zero in the quasi-condensate regime. For our parameters, the third moment is a thermodynamic quantity whose measurement constitutes a sensitive test of the equation of state and our results are in agreement with a modified Yang-Yang thermodynamic prediction. Moreover, we show that the measured skewness reveals the presence of true three body correlations in the system.

Phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

D. Hellweg, Pasi Ryytty, S. Dettmer +3 more

Summary form only given. We have systematically studied BECs of /sup 87/Rb atoms in the regime of phase-fluctuating condensates. We observe the phase fluctuations by measuring the density distribution of the released cloud after ballistic expansion. By varying the temperature, the number of atoms in the condensate and the aspect ratio of the trapping potential, we studied the continuous transition from the usual 3D regime, where phase fluctuations are low, into the regime of strong phase fluctuations in the condensate. To determine the amount of phase fluctuations experimentally, we measured the formation and structure of stripes in the atomic density distribution after ballistic expansion as a function of the above mentioned parameters. The appearance of stripes after switching off the trapping fields can be understood as conversion of phase fluctuations respect. phase gradients into axial velocity fields and consecutive density distributions. These results are in good agreement with theoretical and numerical studies and set clear limitations on applications of BECs e.g. in interferometric measurements.
