5G has been launched in a few countries of the world, so now all focus shifted towards the development of future 6G networks. 5G has connected all aspects of society. Ubiquitous connectivity has opened the doors for more data sharing. Although 5G is providing low latency, higher data rates, and high-speed yet there are some security-related vulnerabilities. Those security issues need to be mitigated for securing 6G networks from existing challenges. Classical cryptography will not remain enough for securing the 6G network. As all classical cryptography can be disabled with the help of quantum mechanics. Therefore, in the place of traditional security solutions, in this article, we have reviewed all the existing quantum solutions of 5G existing security issues to mitigate them and secure 6G in a Future Quantum World.

With the rapid advancement of quantum computing, existing cryptographic schemes in 4G LTE and 5G networks confront serious security threats. Traditional reliance on protocols like IPsec and Transport Layer Security leaves infrastructure vulnerable to future quantum attacks, particularly “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” attacks, where adversaries store current encrypted traffic for future decryption. To counter these threats, Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) have become potential solutions. As future 6G networks aim to realize ultra-reliable and ubiquitous secure connectivity, it is essential to incorporate both PQC and QKD solutions to ensure long-term robustness. Therefore, the synergy of these security solutions and 5G draws the attention of researchers and practitioners worldwide. This study systematically reviews the literature in this specific field. We analyzed evidence from reviewed literature to address three research questions, resulting in a novel taxonomy to categorize publications in this area and a vision for a quantum-safe 6G network. Moreover, we discussed several open challenges in 5G, PQC, and QKD, along with future work.
As the world prepares for the advent of 6G networks, quantum technologies are becoming critical enablers of the next generation of communication systems. This survey paper investigates the convergence of quantum technologies and 6G networks, focusing on their applications, opportunities and challenges. We begin with an examination of the motivations for integrating quantum technologies into 6G, investigating the potential to overcome the limits of classical computing and cryptography. We then highlight key research gaps, particularly in quantum communication, quantum computing integration and security enhancement. A comprehensive overview of quantum technologies relevant to 6G, including quantum communication devices, quantum computing paradigms, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches is provided. A particular focus is on the role of quantum technologies in enhancing 6G Radio Access Networks (RAN), 6G core and edge network optimization, and 6G security. The survey paper also explores the application of quantum cryptography with a focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Quantum Secure Direct Communication (QSDC) and quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and assesses their implementation challenges and potential impact on 6G networks. We also discuss the significant challenges associated with integrating quantum technologies into existing communications infrastructures, including issues of technological maturity, standardization, and economic considerations. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned from current research and outline future research directions to guide the ongoing development of quantum-enabled 6G networks.
As we move toward the rollout of 6G networks, we're stepping into an era of groundbreaking technological advancements. These next-generation networks promise ultra-low latency and seamless integration with artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), unlocking a new level of connectivity and performance. However, with these powerful capabilities come significant security challenges. Traditional encryption methods may not be enough to protect the complex and highly sensitive data traveling through 6G networks. One of the most promising solutions lies in Quantum Communication, particularly Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)-a method that leverages the laws of quantum mechanics to enable highly secure encryption. This paper explores the emerging security risks in both terrestrial and satellite communication channels and reviews current research on integrating quantum communication into 6G infrastructure. Special attention is given to its potential within the metaverse, a rapidly evolving digital environment that demands robust and future-proof security frameworks. Key areas of focus include-Addressing security vulnerabilities in quantum communication, Enhancing infrastructure to support quantum technologies, Reducing error rates in quantum protocols. the paper aims to propose a flexible, forward-looking framework designed to ensure fast, secure communication for critical sectors such as finance, defense, and healthcare.
5G is the new generation of mobile communication that is taking over the 3G and 4G generations. As our generation has expanded and continues to work faster and more adapt to the electronics of today, we are faced with the ever-improving technologies to keep us moving forward. 5G has the possibility of faster upload and download speeds. The possibility of more and improved smart products to advance our lives, from autonomous cars, smart traffic lights, improved city Wi-Fi availability, and gaming improvements with no lag time, just to name a few. It is expected that 5G/6G will make it wide open for new frequency ranges which will result in many connections and huge data transfer maintaining high network efficiency. With 6G on the horizon, Quantum Computing and networking are playing a key role. We anticipate that Quantum Information Technologies will enable and support future 6G systems in both communication and computing. Quantum computing networks boast a few potential security and performance advantages compared to incumbent network technology. The security and energy efficiency of quantum networks is superior to present solutions because quantum networks can theoretically work with single photons whose quantum states remain undisclosed in transmission from origin to destination. Quantum computing networks and associated technology may begin to be implemented in 5G networks and could become fully implemented with the advent of 6G networking technology. In this work, we are focusing on the security risks that can be involved with the new 5G and their proposed solutions. We will study the role of Quantum Key Distribution as leverage to improve 6G security.
The evolution from 5G to 6G wireless networks is driving a fundamental transformation in encryption technologies. While 5G networks primarily rely on advanced classical cryptography, including AES, ECC, and RSA, emerging applications such as IoT, e-healthcare, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications demand lightweight, hybrid, and context-aware security schemes. The advent of quantum computing poses significant threats to classical cryptosystems, motivating the integration of quantum-resistant security techniques, including post-quantum cryptography (PQC), quantum key distribution (QKD), and physical layer security (PLS) in 6G networks. This review synthesizes recent research on classical, hybrid, and quantum-resistant security techniques, highlighting the shift toward multi-layered and adaptive security frameworks. A comparative analysis of PLS in 5G and 6G illustrates its transition from a complementary role to a core security mechanism, especially in ultra-low-latency, massive connectivity, and heterogeneous environments. Finally, open research questions and standardization challenges are discussed, emphasizing the need for scalable, energy-efficient, and interoperable security solutions for next-generation wireless networks.
