A Brief Overview of Quantum Advances and Impact on Economics

Emmanuel Bresson

This paper provides an overview of the economic impact of quantum technologies. The goal is not to be exhaustive but rather to describe an up-to-date panel of stakes, challenges and figures that remains accessible to non-expert readers who wish to understand the priorities of the so-called quantum revolution. In a first part, the paper reminds the fundamentals of quantum physics (though not entering into technical details). Then in section 2, the benefits of different quantum technologies are challenged and/or illustrated. Section 3 puts in light the main steps that are required in order to economically benefit from the quantum; three axis are identified: education of skilled people, strategy for innovation ecosystem, and standardization. Section 4 concludes by giving some figures on funding efforts made by countries around the world and by pointing out some limitations to overcome.

An Overview of Quantum Computing for Technology Managers

Eleanor Gilbert Rieffel

Faster algorithms, novel cryptographic mechanisms, and alternative methods of communication become possible when the model underlying information and computation changes from a classical mechanical model to a quantum mechanical one. Quantum algorithms perform a select set of tasks vastly more efficiently than any classical algorithm, but for many tasks it has been proved that quantum algorithms provide no advantage. The breadth of quantum computing applications is still being explored. Major application areas include security and the many fields that would benefit from efficient quantum simulation. The quantum information processing viewpoint provides insight into classical algorithmic issues as well as a deeper understanding of entanglement and other non-classical aspects of quantum physics. This overview is aimed at technology managers who wish to gain a high level understanding of quantum information processing, particularly quantum computing.

Quantum Technology: A Theoretical Overview of the Possibilities

James Daniel Whitfield, Jun Yang, Weishi Wang +2 more

ABSTRACT Quantum technology is full of figurative and literal noise obscuring its promise. In this overview, we will attempt to provide a sober assessment of the promise of quantum technology with a focus on computing. We provide a tour of quantum computing and quantum technology that is aimed to be comprehensible to scientists and engineers without becoming a popular account. The goal is not a comprehensive review nor a superficial introduction but rather to serve as a useful map to navigate the hype, the scientific literature, and upcoming press releases about quantum technology and quantum computing. We have aimed to cite the most recent topical reviews, key results, and guide the reader away from fallacies and towards active discussions in the current quantum computing literature. The goal of this article was to be pedantic and introductory without compromising on the science.
