Determining Interface Dielectric Losses in Superconducting Coplanar-Waveguide Resonators

Wayne H. Woods, Greg Calusine, Alexander J. Melville +6 more

© 2019 American Physical Society. Superconducting quantum-computing architectures comprise resonators and qubits that experience energy loss due to two-level systems (TLSs) in bulk and interfacial dielectrics. An understanding of these losses is critical to improving performance in superconducting circuits. In this work, we present a method for quantifying the TLS losses of different bulk and interfacial dielectrics present in superconducting coplanar-waveguide (CPW) resonators. By combining statistical characterization of sets of specifically designed CPW resonators on isotropically etched silicon substrates with detailed electromagnetic modeling, we determine the separate loss contributions from individual material interfaces and bulk dielectrics. This technique for analyzing interfacial TLS losses can be used to guide targeted improvements to qubits, resonators, and their superconducting fabrication processes.

Green-function approach to the radiation-field quantization for homogeneous and inhomogeneous Kramers-Kronig dielectrics

Toralf Gruner, D.‐G. Welsch

A quantization scheme for the radiation field in dispersive and absorptive linear dielectrics is developed, which applies to both bulk material and multilayer dielectric structures. Starting from the phenomenological Maxwell equations, where the properties of the dielectric are described by a permittivity consistent with the Kramers-Kronig relations, an expansion of the field operators is performed that is based on the Green function of the classical Maxwell equations and preserves the equal-time canonical field commutation relations. In particular, in frequency intervals with approximately vanishing absorption the concept of quantization through mode expansion for dispersive dielectrics is recognized. The theory further reveals that weak absorption gives rise to space-dependent mode operators that spatially evolve according to quantum Langevin equations in the space domain. To illustrate the applicability of the theory to inhomogeneous structures, the quantization of the radiation field in a dispersive and absorptive one-interface dielectric is performed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

EIA metamaterials based on hybrid metal/dielectric structures with dark-mode-enhanced absorption

Fuli Zhang, Xin‐Chao Huang, Weiqi Cai +8 more

Metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) has promising applications in spectroscopy and sensing. Here we propose an EIA metamaterial based on hybrid metal/dielectric structures, which are composed of a metallic wire and a dielectric block, and investigate the EIA-like effect by simulations, experiments, and the two-oscillator model. An EIA-like effect emerges in virtue of the near-field coupling between metallic wire and dielectric block, and the dielectric block exhibiting magnetic dipolar resonance makes a major contribution to the resonance absorption. The magnetic flux through the dielectric block engendered by the near filed of the metallic wire determines the coupling between dielectric block and metallic wire. With the variation of the separation between dielectric block and metallic wire, the EIA-like effect is preserved and does not convert into the EIT-like effect although the coupling and consequently the absorbance are altered. Based on the two-oscillator model, the absorption spectrum of the EIA metamaterial is quantitatively analyzed and the parameters of the oscillator system are retrieved.
