Abstract

We investigate the behavior of squeezing in combined quadratures of biphotons generated in the parametric downconversion process for partially coherent pump beams in spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal domains compared to fully coherent beams. These beams involve both stationary (continuous-wave) and non-stationary (pulsed) processes. This study also involves the derivation of complex Gaussian representation for a partially spatially coherent pump modeled as a Gaussian Schell model beam, which is more resistant to the effects of turbulence. Our findings illustrate that by employing the partially coherent pump, one can generate a squeezed state possessing partially coherent properties without compromising in squeezing by optimizing pump field amplitude, interaction length, and degree of coherence of the pump. We anticipate these results to be useful in limiting the possibility of eavesdropping in noisy channels and optical high-precision measurements in the case of continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on two-mode squeezed states.

Partially coherent spontaneous parametric downconversion: Twisted Gaussian biphotons

Lucas Hutter, Esteban S. Gómez, G. Lima +1 more

Partially coherent optical beams present phenomena that may not appear in perfectly coherent beams. In this regard, spontaneous parametric downconversion is an intriguing physical process, since the optical properties of the pump laser beam are transferred to the quantum properties of the down-converted photon pairs. Here, the authors study the transfer of twist phase, a novel property of the so-called twisted Gaussian Schell model beams, from a pump beam to down-converted photons. The authors show that a non-zero twist phase can lead to highly entangled yet highly mixed states. The correlations that appear in near/far-field intensity measurements, in the two-photon covariance matrix as well as in orbital angular momentum modes, are explored. The authors derive expressions for the purity of the two-photon state and relate it to the transverse spatial coherence of the pump beam. Their main results utilize a Wigner function formalism that can be applied to a number of scenarios involving partially coherent downconversion sources and contribute to the recent interest in spatially correlated photon pairs produced in mixed states, with possible applications in quantum communication and imaging.

Experimental generation and characterization of partially spatially coherent qubits

Preeti Sharma, Sakshi Rao, Bhaskar Kanseri

Abstract Partially spatially coherent qubits are more immune to turbulent atmospheric conditions than coherent qubits, which makes them excellent candidates for free-space quantum communication. In this article, we report the generation of partially spatially coherent qubits in a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process using a Gaussian Schell model (GSM) pump beam. For this non-linear process, we demonstrate experimentally for the first time, the transfer of spatial coherence features of the pump (classical) to the biphotons (quantum) field. Also, the spatial profiles of partially coherent qubits generated in type-I and type-II non-collinear SPDC process are experimentally observed and multi-mode nature of partially coherent photons (qubit) is ascertained. These investigations pave the way toward the efficient generation of partially spatially coherent qubits with a tunable degree of spatial coherence, which lead to wide range of applications in frontier areas such as quantum cryptography, teleportation, imaging, and lithography.

Quantum nonlocal double slit interference with partially coherent qubits

Sakshi Rao, Bhaskar Kanseri

Partially coherent quantum-entangled beams combine quantum correlation with partial coherence, allowing them to maintain quantum characteristics while being more resistant to distortions caused by random media during propagation. In this study, we investigate the effect of coherence variation of such beams on non-local double-slit quantum interference. The spatial coherence variation is achieved by controlling the transverse coherence length of the Gaussian Schell model pump in the spontaneous parametric down conversion process. For a fixed beam size, the momentum correlation width of partially coherent biphotons increases with the decrease in the transverse coherence length. This results in a biphoton beam exhibiting multiple spatial modes, making it more suitable for studying the non-local features of quantum states in imaging, interference, and diffraction experiments. Our findings infer both high-quality and near-unity visibility of nonlocal interference using the partially coherent twin beams, even with the substantial decrease in the coherence of the pump. We believe these results can enhance robustness against the deleterious effects of the medium during propagation and can have potential applications in optical image cryptography, biomedical imaging, quantum lithography, and quantum holography.

Spatial two-photon coherence of the entangled field produced by down-conversion using a partially spatially coherent pump beam

Anand K. Jha, Robert W. Boyd

We study the spatial coherence properties of the entangled two-photon field produced by parametric down-conversion (PDC) when the pump field is, spatially, a partially coherent beam. By explicitly treating the case of a pump beam of the Gaussian Schell-model type, we show that in PDC the spatial coherence properties of the pump field get entirely transferred to the spatial coherence properties of the down-converted two-photon field. As one important consequence of this study, we find that, for two-qubit states based on the position correlations of the two-photon field, the maximum achievable entanglement, as quantified by concurrence, is bounded by the degree of spatial coherence of the pump field. These results could be important by providing a means of controlling the entanglement of down-converted photons by tailoring the degree of coherence of the pump field.

Boosting Entanglement Generation in Down-Conversion with Incoherent Illumination

Lucas Hutter, G. Lima, Stephen Patrick Walborn

Entangled photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion have been of paramount importance for our current understanding of quantum mechanics and advances in quantum information. In this process, the quantum correlations of the down-converted photons are governed by the optical properties of the pump beam illuminating the nonlinear crystal. Extensively, the pump beam has been modeled by either coherent beams or by the well-known Gaussian-Schell model, which leads to the natural conclusion that a high degree of optical coherence is required for the generation of highly entangled states. Here, we show that when a novel class of partially coherent Gaussian pump beams is considered, a distinct type of quantum state can be generated for which the amount of entanglement increases inversely with the degree of coherence of the pump beam. This leads to highly incoherent yet highly entangled multiphoton states, which should have interesting consequences for photonic quantum information science.
